Opis:
Adsorption of Cu2+, Co2+, and Mn2+ metal ions on oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (O-MWCNTs) was investigated as a function of contact time, pH, sorbent dosage, and initial metal ion concentration. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were oxidized using HNO3. All the adsorption experiments were conducted by the batch method. Determination of metal ions was performed by the flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The results showed that the amount of metal ions adsorbed strongly depended on pH. The affinity order of the three adsorbed metal ions by O-MWCNTs was Cu22+> Co2+ > Mn2+.

Algal inhibiting materials were synthesized by the co-impregnation method. Cerium was taken as an algal inhibiting agent with copper/sepiolite utilized as the carrier. The algal growth inhibition was assessed based on the form of presence and distribution of Cu2+ and Ce3+ ions on the surface of sepiolite using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and SEM analysis. The results indicate that at 5 wt. % Cu content, 0.8 wt. % Ce and after heat treatment at 400 °C, the materials exhibit the best algal inhibiting capacity of 83.11%.

Opis:
The usefulness of micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) for copper ion removal was evaluated. The experiments were performed in a semi-pilot installation in a cross-flow regime with the use of ultrafiltration modules (5 kDa and 10 kDa). The first stage of the tests included copper ion removal in the classic UF process. During the next step, anionic surfactant (sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, SDBS) was added to the feed solution in a wide range of concentrations. The effect of copper and surfactant concentrations on separation efficiency and permeate flux was evaluated. It was found that MEUF enables high copper ion removal. Depending on surfactant concentration in the feed solution, the average copper concentration in the permeate was in the range from 0.02 to 0.08 mM (feed solution 0.79 mM). Surfactant rejection was strongly dependent on its concentration in the feed; the highest retention was obtained when surfactant was in the form of micelles, i.e., for concentrations exceeding the CMC.

Opis:
The effect of increasing contamination with copper on the content of trace elements in soil after application of compost, bentonite and zeolite has been examined. The contents of copper, cadmium, lead, chromium, zinc, nickel, manganese, iron and cobalt were determined in soil. Soil contamination with copper and the application of neutralizing substances (compost, bentonite and zeolite) had significant effects on the contents of trace elements in soil. Copper pollution mainly caused a very high increase in the content of copper and a smaller one in the amount of cadmium in soil. Copper contamination caused a decrease in the content of cobalt, nickel, zinc, manganese, iron and lead in soil. All of applied substances, especially zeolite, reduced the content of copper, as well as cadmium, chromium and, to a smaller extent, lead and manganese in soil. It is worth noticing that the effect of zeolite was much stronger than the effect of bentonite or compost. Compost acted similarly with respect to cobalt and nickel. Zeolite had a similar effect on the content of zinc and iron in soil. Bentonite had a comparable influence on the accumulation of zinc in the soil. In turn, bentonite and zeolite contributed to an increase in the content of nickel and cobalt in the soil.

Opis:
The removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions using walnut shells was investigated. The effects of pH, contact time, initial metal concentration, adsorbent concentration, and co-ions were studied in synthetic solutions. Metal uptake was found to be dependent on the initial pH of the solution; the removal rate increased upon increasing pH, showing the highest affinity at pH 5–7. The amount of metal removed improved with increasing initial concentration. Increasing adsorbent dosage enhanced removal efficiency, but reduced the amount absorbed per unit mass of walnut shells. The presence of co-ions suppressed the uptake of heavy metals, divalent ions having a more negative effect than monovalentions. The adsorption of Zn, Cd and Ni onto walnut shells was found to fit Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The results obtained in the tests with mining waste leachate showed the potential use of walnut shells for the removal of heavy metals.

The degradation of pentoxifylline (PTX) using H2O2, UV, H2O2/UV, Fenton and photo-Fenton processes has been examined in aqueous solutions. The influence of oxidation agent and initial PTX concentration, on H2O2, H2O2/UV, Fenton and photo-Fenton reactions was investigated. The addition of inorganic ions (Cl, NO3, SO42– and CO32–) on the degradation efficiency of PTX was tested for H2O2/UV, Fenton and photo-Fenton processeses. The results indicate that the photo-Fenton reaction is the most sufficient for PTX removal. The complete pharmaceutics decomposition is achieved after 5 min under optimized concentration of FeSO4,·7 H2O2 and H2O2. The degradation of PTX is inhibited in the presence of inorganic matter in H2O2/UV and Fenton reaction. In the photo-Fenton process addition of above compounds does not affect the reaction rate. Structures of ten products of photo-Fenton reaction have been proposed.

Stormwater discharged from urban areas can contain significant amounts of heavy metals, especially zinc and copper. Roof runoff is very often directed into the soil and may pose a risk for groundwater quality. Lysimeter research has shown that zinc and copper contained in stormwater may be effectively removed by passing through vegetated soil. The average removal efficiency was greater than 90% and did not depend on the metal concentration in the influent, and the concentrations in the effluent met the limits for drinking water. Infiltration may be a reliable treatment method for roof runoff and may make stormwater safe for groundwater recharge.

Opis:
Waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) contain not only harmful materials but also many valuable resources, especially metals, which attracts more and more attention from the public. In this study, a sulfonic acid functionalized ionic liquid ([BSO3HPy]OTf) was used to recycle copper from WPCBs. Zinc and lead, represented as typical heavy metals, were chosen to study the leaching behavior and their relation to copper. Five factors such as particle size, ionic liquid (IL) concentration, H2O dose, solid to IL ratio and temperature were investigated in detail. The results showed that copper leaching rate was high, up to 99.77%, and zinc leaching rate reached the highest value of 74.88% under the optimum conditions. Lead cannot be leached effectively and the leaching rate was mostly low than 10%, which indirectly indicated that [BSO3HPy]OTf has a good selectivity to lead. Besides, the interaction of copper, lead and zinc was characterized macroscopically by means of statistical methods. The Spearman correlation analysis showed that copper and zinc had a highly positive correlation. Lead had little relation to copper, which to some extent indicated that the effect of zinc on copper leaching behavior was bigger than that of lead.

Opis:
The feasibility of various composts to operate as sorbents for heavy metals (Cu and Zn) removal from wastewater has been evaluated. Three commercial composts obtained from municipal solid wastes (MWS), sludge sewage (SS) and poultry manure (PM) were selected as potential sorbents. Kinetic and equilibrium tests were conducted in order to assess the equilibrium conditions to remove metals from aqueous samples. For all composts, the maximum time necessary to reach the equilibrium was 240 min. The Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models were found to fit the sorption data. The SS compost proved to be the one with highest removal capability for both assessed metals, while MWS compost showed to be the less suitable for this purpose. These results can be explained in terms of the compost surface properties, namely, with the cation exchange capacity.

Opis:
Mass balance of selected heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Pb, Hg, Zn, Cd) released from waste into leachate during 8 years of landfill exploitation has been calculated. The average release of all analyzed heavy metals did not exceed 1.7%. Heavy metals released in the largest quantities were Cr (0.025 –1.685%), Hg (0.033–1.540%) and Cd (0.082–0.701%). Release of Pb, Cu, Zn was 0.008–0.152%; 0.012–0.085% and 0.007–0.152%, respectively. Cr and Hg do not form an insoluble sulfide precipitate and that is why they are released in a larger amount. Cd and Pb concentrations are positively correlated with the amount of the atmospheric precipitation and the amount of leachates, which means that infiltrating rainfall can leach out these metals from waste. Favorable conditions for leaching of these metals are probably a result of their precipitation as carbonates. A strong correlation between Cu, Zn, and Cr indicates they do not precipitate as carbonates and further they can be subject to desorption processes. In the case of Cu, Zn, Cr and Hg, a positive correlation with the amount of deposited waste was also observed.

Opis:
Salvinia natans L. is a known bioaccumulator of metal ions from the aquatic environment. Exposure of plants to prolonged impact of toxins along with a large dose of the metal affects the physiological condition of the plants. The changes occurring in the plants in the phytoremediation process in contaminated medium culture of 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg Cu/dm3 show two basic physiological parameters: the assimilation pigment content (chlorophyll a and b) responsible for the production of energy in the process of photosynthesis, and the total protein level as the main constituent of the plant. Conducted studies confirmed a negative effect of high concentrations of copper(II) on Salvinia natans L. plants which in these conditions are capable to bioaccumulate metal from each contaminated culture medium.

The effect of organic fertilization and microbiological preparations for phytostabilization of copper ore tailings were examined. It has been shown that the introduction of the pulp, waste from the sugar industry, leads to the mobilization of trace metals. The copper content in aqueous extract of enriched waste was greater than 500-fold higher than in controls. It has also been stated an increase in the toxicity of extracts. While the use of biopreparations for seed treatment contributed to the stimulation of nutrients uptake by plants. In the biomass of plants from treated seeds with a suspension of Azotobacter strain EK, and biosurfactant was found more phosphorus and calcium than in plants from control.

Comparative evaluation of metal occurrence was conducted for sludge originating from three wastewater treatment plants, which differ in wastewater treatment methods, processing and drying of sludge. It was demonstrated that metals (Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd, Cr) in sludge are mainly bound to organic-sulfide fraction. Zinc was also present in significant amounts in hydrated iron and manganese oxide fraction, nickel and cadmium in exchangeable-carbonate fraction, whereas lead in residue fraction. In ash obtained after calcination at 600 °C occurred mainly metal enriched nearly insoluble compound fraction (residual fraction). Metal accumulation in such non-mobile fraction is advantageous with respect to soil-water environment protection.

The study was conducted on three specially prepared test areas along main streets of Bialystok. The experimental plots were sown with two lawn grass mixtures: Eko and Roadside, and three doses of sewage sludge 0.0 (control), 7.5 kg/m2 and 15.0 kg/m2 were used. The calculated bioconcentration factor made possible to determine the mobility of the various metals from the soil solution to the aerial parts of plants. The obtained results showed that the plants absorbed Cd, Zn, Cu easier than Pb and Ni suggesting a high mobility, in particular of Cd, Zn, Cu, and reflects the easiness extraction of those metals by plants. Significant correlations between concentrations of metals in soil and grass were observed, nickel in soil was significantly correlated with Cd, Zn and Cu in plants, while the Zn content in soil with the level of Cu in plants.
