Opis:
Raw apricot kernel shells (AKS) and ultrasound-modified apricot kernel shells were used as adsorbents for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. For raw and modified AKS, the experimental data well fitted to the Langmuir isotherm and adsorption kinetics was suited to pseudo-second order kinetic model indicating chemisorption as the rate-limiting step. For raw and modified AKS, maximum adsorption capacities obtained from the Langmuir adsorption model were 6.5 mg/g and 9.9 mg/g, respectively. Maximum Cr(VI) adsorption was obtained at a pH 2 and optimum stirring speed was determined as 250 rpm. After ultrasound modification, an increase for Cr(VI) adsorption was observed. Raw AKS as low-cost natural biomaterial can be preferred for the removal of Cr(VI) when compared to other adsorbents. Ultrasonic modification can be used to improve the efficiency of Cr(VI) removal.

Opis:
The present study discusses the adsorption kinetics of arsenic(V) on granular ferric hydroxide (GEH) and the GEH adsorption capacity for arsenic(V) at equilibrium. The impact of temperature on GEH adsorption capacity was studied, as well as the effects of the initial concentration of arsenic(V) and GEH concentration on the adsorption rates of arsenic(V). The Freundlich isotherm describes the arsenic(V) adsorption behavior reasonably well (r2 > 0.965). The adsorption kinetics was studied by fitting the experimental data to both first-order and second-order models. The maximum adsorption capacity of arsenic(V) on GEH was 2.701 mg·g–1, which is higher than the adsorption capacities of other adsorbents reported. The kinetics of arsenic(V) adsorption was well defined by the second-order model, with the correlation coefficients in the range of 0.960–0.987. This study shows that due to its properties, GEH is a good candidate for removal of arsenic(V) from groundwater.

Opis:
The mechanism of SO2 absorption in seawater is investigated, and the experiment was carried out accordingly. Emphasis is on applications of seawater scrubbing of ship’s power plant exhaust gas containing SO2. The formulated model is used to predict the influence of various parameters on both pH of tailwater and seawater desulfurization capability, e.g., the partial pressure of SO2, the partial pressure of CO2, tailwater temperature, pH and alkalinity of seawater. Experiment results indicated that the seawater desulfurization capacity increases with both increasing partial pressure of SO2, pH and alkalinity and decreasing partial pressure of CO2 and temperature. The study shows the desulfurization capacity of seawater with 3.5% salinity is approximately twice that of freshwater. Different scenarios in which the required absorbent supply rate for a given SO2 removal efficiency are studied. It is observed a 97% removal efficiency, corresponding to meeting the SOx limits in the SOx emission control areas (SECA) while operating on a heavy fuel oil containing sulfur 3.5 wt. %, requires a minimum water supply rate of 0.0407–0.0683 m3/kWh, depending mainly on the water composition in terms of alkalinity and salinity. Such data are important in assessing the operation cost of the water scrubbing system.

The applicability of the natural and MnO2-coated zeolite as sorbent for the removal of Mn(II) from synthetic solutions has been investigated. Batch experiments were carried out to determine the influence of pH and Mn(II) concentration on the sorption process. A maximum removal efficiency (98.9%) was observed for modified zeolite with the concentration of 10 mg/dm3 of manganese in solution. The equilibrium data showed a very good correlation for both Langmuir and Freundlich sorption models and this suggests both monolayer adsorption and a heterogeneous surface existence. Maximum sorption capacity calculated from the Langmuir model constituted 5.57 mg/g for natural zeolite and 13.41 mg/g for modified zeolite.

Opis:
The paper investigates the efficiency of adsorption of organic pollutants present in natural water on powdered activated carbon (PAC). A PAC adsorption capacity is related to the mass exchange driving force between water and sorbent. During the study, it was confirmed that the mass transfer driving force in the homogeneous flocculator with simultaneous PAC adsorption was lower than in the filter column. The filter showed a better utilization of PAC adsorption capacity than the volume system, for the optimal PAC dose. The authors proposed a new method where adsorption was carried out in the filter column with PAC applied to its upper layer. The powdered sorbent was applied to the bed at the end of a backwashing cycle. Two models of PAC adsorption in transient states for the homogeneous flocculator and the column mass exchanger were presented. The simulation calculations confirmed that there was still a possibility to double the PAC adsorption capacity concerning commonly used adsorption with coagulation in the homogeneous flocculator.

Opis:
This work focuses on the surface modification of fly ash spheroidal particles and their application in phosphorus and chromium(VI) adsorption. The results show that through surface modification, amorphous silica-alumina gels precipitated on the spheroidal particle surface (by which the microsurface area of the reaction products is effectively enlarged) and the surface zeta potential was changed to fit for adsorbing anions. During the adsorption experiment (single and competitive solute systems), chromium(VI) was easier to adsorb. The surface zeta potential and the existence of competitive ions should be recognized as two important factors affecting adsorption efficiency. A higher temperature could improve the adsorption efficiencies of the two solute systems. The fitting results of the pseudo-second-order model (single and competitive solute systems) show better agreement than those of the pseudo-first-order model at every temperature. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm equation can better simulate the adsorption process in single solute sy039stems, but only the chromium(VI) adsorption process can be fitted by the competitive Langmuir adsorption isotherm in competitive solute systems.

The effects of modification and calcination conditions on the performance of red mud (RM) to absorb low-concentration formaldehyde in air were investigated using a fixed-bed flow reactor. The results show that the adsorption of RM for formaldehyde increases upon decreasing calcination temperature, with the optimum calcination temperature of 300 °C. H 2O2 modification can improve the adsorption performance, with the optimum modification concentration at 20 wt. %. Pore structure analysis indicated that low-temperature calcination improves the formation of micropores (0.9 nm to 2.7 nm), and maximizes the specific surface area and total pore volume thereby facilitating formaldehyde adsorption.

The removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions using walnut shells was investigated. The effects of pH, contact time, initial metal concentration, adsorbent concentration, and co-ions were studied in synthetic solutions. Metal uptake was found to be dependent on the initial pH of the solution; the removal rate increased upon increasing pH, showing the highest affinity at pH 5–7. The amount of metal removed improved with increasing initial concentration. Increasing adsorbent dosage enhanced removal efficiency, but reduced the amount absorbed per unit mass of walnut shells. The presence of co-ions suppressed the uptake of heavy metals, divalent ions having a more negative effect than monovalentions. The adsorption of Zn, Cd and Ni onto walnut shells was found to fit Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The results obtained in the tests with mining waste leachate showed the potential use of walnut shells for the removal of heavy metals.

Opis:
Adsorption studies were conducted to assess the feasibility of ferric hydroxide-based material for treatment of highly arsenic-contaminated effluents. The experiments were performed in a batch adsorption regime using a synthetic aqueous solution. The contact time between arsenic ions and the adsorbent, initial concentration of arsenic in treated solution, temperature of solution and adsorbent dose had a significant effect on the adsorption performance in the system. Both the mechanism of the process involved and the rate of As(III) and As(V) adsorption were analyzed based on pseudo-firstand pseudo-second order kinetic models. The adsorption data at constant temperature were described by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equation, and the theoretical adsorption capacity of ferric hydroxide was determined to be 43.75 mg/g and 44.04 mg/g for arsenic(III) and (V), respectively. The estimated thermodynamic parameters, including changes in free energy, enthalpy and entropy, revealed that the adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic under applied experimental conditions.

Indoor activities involving cooking and warming, outdoor sources, smoking, and candle and in-cense burning may introduce a massive portion of polycyclic fragrant hydrocarbons. These are well known for their mutagenicity and carcinogenicity and are omnipresent in urban situations as a result of the combustion of fuel. Due to small particle size, penetration has been suspected to be one major source of indoor polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In the current study, the manufacturing of three types of filters (electrostatic charge-based, pomegranate peel biochar-based, and birds’ feathers-based) was carried out. Their efficiency was tested to remove molecules bounded PAHs and also other geno-toxic compounds associated with these particles. The electrostatic filter was more efficient (27.42%) than pomegranate peel-based and birds’ feathers-based filters (13.86% and 8.32%, respectively). The carcinogenetic effects of PAHs emitted from outdoor and indoor pollutants can be reduced using these kinds of filters.

The present study was focused on the technical feasibility of using immobilized hybrid biomass of Pleurotos sajor-caju and sunflower for Pb(II) removal from the contaminated water. After preliminary evaluation, it was found that immobilized hybrid biomass of Pleurotos sajor-caju and sun-flower effectively removed Pb(II) from wastewater at pH 4.5. The effect of various experimental parameters on Pb(II) uptake by hybrid biosorbent was systematically evaluated in a batch biosorption system. The optimized biosorbent dose, contact time, initial metal concentration and temperature were 0.05 g/100 cm 3, 180 min, 800 mg/dm3 and 60 °C. Dynamics of the adsorption process were studied, and the values of rate constants of pseudo first order and pseudo second order kinetic models were calculated. Equilibrium isotherms for the adsorption of Pb(II) were analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The sorption of Pb(II) followed the pseudo second order kinetic model. The Langmuir sorption isotherm fitted well to Pb(II) concentration data. The results revealed that this new hybrid biosorbent system was a promising candidate for eliminating Pb(II) from contaminated aquatic environment.

A new method has been presented, which leads to a significant improvement of the adsorption ability of blast furnace slag (BFS). An ultra-high pressure water jet mill cavitation disintegrator and a controlled vacuum freeze dryer were used to disintegrate amorphous BFS. Specific surface areas of both BFS and disintegrated slag (BFS-D) were measured using the SBET method. BFS-D was obtained with an average particle size of 198 nm and with 27-times bigger free specific surface area than that of original BFS. The BFS-D was tested as an adsorbent of phosphate from aqueous solutions. Adsorption data were analysed using the Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherms. The BFS-D after phosphate adsorption was characterized using FTIR. The theoretical adsorption capacity of the BFS-D was 30.49 mg P/g, which represents an increase by 126.7% compared to the original BFS. Surface precipitation of hydroxyapatite was dominant retention mechanism.

Discharge of industrial waste containing heavy metals to the environment is a main concern because of their toxicity to many life forms. Adsorption process is one of the conventional methods in order to adsorb heavy metals from wastewater effluents. Therefore, the removal of Cu(II) from aquatic solutions using modified maize hull was investigated. All experiments were performed in batch conditions. The residual Cu(II) concentration was measured by AAS. Upon increasing the adsorbent dosage, pH, and contact time and decreasing Cu(II) concentration, the removal efficiency of Cu(II) ions increased. In optimum conditions, 50% of copper was removed by modified maize hull. The experimental data were best fitted by the Langmuir type 2 model and the adsorption kinetic model followed a pseudo-second order type 1 model. It seems that the use of the modified maize hull to remove Cu(II) ions is very suitable, low-cost, and efficient.

Opis:
Phosphorus in wastewater is one of the main causes of water eutrophication. Phosphorus removal from swine wastewater is always a challenge. To achieve on-site recycling of swine farm waste, the low-cost pyro/hydrochars and their Fe-Mn-modified form were prepared from swine manure as an efficient adsorbent for phosphate removal. The results showed that the phosphate removal efficiency of unmodified pyro/hydrochars was less than 7.77%, which was significantly increased to 58.21–83.76% for the Fe-Mn-modified-pyro/hydrochars. The maximum adsorption capacity of pyrochar was found on the Fe-Mn-modified-pyrochar (PC-600M) with a surface area of 102.03 m2/g and a micropore volume of 0.25 cm3/g. The PC-600M exhibited high adsorption capacity (26.07 mg/g) in a low concentration of phosphate (50 mg/dm3), and its removal efficiency reached up to 83.76% within 24 hours. Furthermore, the adsorption of phosphate on biochars without modification (HC-210 and PC-600) was validated using a first-order kinetic model, and the adsorption of phosphate on modified biochars (HC-210M and PC-600M) was well described by the second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm. In addition, there is no significant difference in the adsorption of phosphorus between pyrochars and hydrochars, but the preparation cost of hydrochars is lower than that of pyrochars. It was confirmed that the low-cost Fe-Mn-modified pyro/hydrochar from swine manure had potential for efficient phosphate removal in wastewater treatment and would facilitate value-added utilization of swine manure.
