Opis:
Preview: A relation is what connects two separated beings or what a being joins with itself; what is, in other words, in-between two beings or inside two parts of one being. Relations may be conceived as external or internal to those beings, as an essential part, or as separate beings of another nature. One usually cannot easily perceive or experience relations themselves (although there are exceptions). But the case is that relations must be something rather than nothing. They must be something since we use relations and go around them all the time, in natural, casual, day-to-day life, as well as in philosophical, careful, and reflexive attitude. And, if they are something, one can think them. Some may say, that philosophers should think about what can only be thought. Who else could do this? So, here it is, a new Eidos. A Journal for Philosophy of Culture issue devoted to relations.

Opis:
Preview: Value Based Practice (VBP) is the position (both practical and theoretical, philosophical and medical), which was derived by Bill Kenneth Fulford from the Natural Language Philosophy. Fulford and his collaborators are interested in the language spoken by all the parties involved in medical care and social work. This language, they claim, is filled with different and inconsistent values. Different values guide the actions of a doctor, a patient, the patient’s family, the employer of doctors, the employer of patients, etc. The aim of VBP is to arrange a situation in which all stakeholders can find their own values and negotiate with other parties in order to help the experts make the most appropriate clinical decisions. What all contributors of VBP have in common is the notion that there is no place for metaphysical or anthropological concerns in the aims of their project. In this short paper I will formulate the basics of the thesis that there are some non-verbalised premises at the heart of VBP theory, which are in opposition to this declaration. First I would like to provide some basic information about VBP and then to suggest some sketches of possible arguments.

Opis:
Preview: /Review of Daniel Burston’s, A Forgotten Freudian: The Passion of Karl Stern (London: Karnac Books 2017), 256 pages./ When the chief editor of Eidos kindly asked me to write a review of Daniel Burston’s new book devoted to Karl Stern, I kept a straight face and gritted my teeth. I did not want to reveal the fact that I had never heard of this Canadian psychiatrist and intellectual, who was probably one of the most influential figures in the development of psychoanalysis and in criticizing brain-reductionism in psychiatry. With a nervous smile I accepted the offer. When I was back home, I double-checked my library for any signs of Karl Stern’s presence. There was nothing. I had to admit that the subtitle of the book – A Forgotten Freudian – is not just an advertisement catch phrase for newbies to the field, but expresses the very state of affairs: there is a completely repressed Freudian researcher called Karl Stern.
