    The internationalization of higher education is steadily increasing, which can be observed also in the growing number of university students benefiting from the European mobility program European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students (Erasmus+). The author’s survey questionnaire was used to investigate the motivations that influence the decision to participate in the Erasmus+ programme and to choose Lisbon as a student exchange city, as well as to learn about the benefits of mobility. Furthermore, the differences between the scholarship holders from Poland and those from other countries were presented. In general, students considered a number of factors when joining Erasmus+. International mobility plays an important role in both personal and educational development. The information obtained on academic mobility may contribute to the development and popularization of the idea of academic exchange programmes among students and may facilitate the planning of promotional activities of the university’s international relations offices.

    In the empirical study of intercultural exchange presented in this paper, we assessed Erasmus students for knowledge of English as a foreign language (EFL) and their level of reflective judgement, to test for correlation between the two variables. The basic theoretical framing was derived from King and Kitchener’s (1994) reflective judgment model (RJM), based on 3 different levels of reflectivity, connected to progressive cognitive development of adults: pre-reflective, quasireflective and reflective. The results of the study show that the students displayed high levels of reflective judgment and importantly, we found a correlation between their standard of English and their level of reflectivity. The ability to communicate in English is a prerequisite to participation in the Erasmus programme, therefore it was expected that the students would score well for English knowledge. However, the results of the study suggest that being competent in the use of English as a foreign language may be a predictor of higher reflectivity amongst students in higher education. This creates a controversial pedagogical implication suggesting that learning English as a foreign language to a high standard fuels reflectivity.

    Przy użyciu nowych danych, w kontekście aktualnych tendencji, poddano analizie zjawisko umiędzynarodowienia szkolnictwa wyższego na Ukrainie pod kątem mobilności studentów i współpracy międzynarodowej, wskazując przede wszystkim na jego asymetrię. Polska, Niemcy i Rosja są priorytetowymi krajami dla ukraińskich studentów podejmujących studia wyższe za granicą (70% ukraińskich studentów uczy się w tych krajach). Polska stała się kluczową destynacją niedawno, a liczba studentów z Ukrainy gwałtownie wzrasta (ponad 33%). Największe grupy studentów zagranicznych na Ukrainie pochodzą z Azerbejdżanu, Turkmenistanu, Indii, Nigerii i Maroka (52%), podczas gdy jest tylko 8,1% studentów z krajów OECD, 2,9% z UE, 0,9% z G7 i prawie 14% z państw sąsiadujących. Gruzja zastąpiła Rosję wśród 10 głównych państw dostarczających studentów na Ukrainę. Całkowite poziomy eksportu i importu w szkolnictwie wyższym mierzone mobilnością studentów na Ukrainie są mniejsze w obu przypadkach niż 4/5%. Można również zauważyć zasadniczą dysproporcję w regionalizacji umiędzynarodowienia edukacji wyższej poprzez przypływ studentów na korzyść wschodnich i południowych części Ukrainy. Ogólny kontekst nauki języków obcych studentów międzynarodowych zmienił się ostatnio z dominacji rosyjskiego (57%) na dominację języka ukraińskiego (49%). Potwierdza się także wzrastająca tendencja do rozszerzania współpracy, w kontekście Europejskich Obszarów Szkolnictwa Wyższego i Badań, UE i państw partnerskich w obrębie programów Erasmus+ oraz Horizon 2020. Ostatnia modernizacja legislacyjna dotycząca szkolnictwa wyższego wzmacnia jego internacjonalizację na Ukrainie.
    What is analysed with the use of new data, some peculiarities and trends is the internationalization of Ukrainian higher education (HE) with regard to academic mobility and cooperation. The asymmetry between the outgoing and incoming internationalization in HE is reveled. Poland, German, and Russia are priority destinations for HE abroad (70% Ukrainian students abroad study in these countries). Poland has become a key destination recently and the number of Ukrainian students there is increasing rapidly (33% and more). The biggest groups of international students in Ukraine are from Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, India, Nigeria, Morocco (52%). At the same time, there are 8.1% of students from OECD, from the EU – 2.9%, G7 – 0.9%, and from the neighboring countries – nearly 14%. Georgia replaced Russia among the top 10 countries supplying students to Ukraine. The total levels of exporting/importing HE measured by student mobility in Ukraine are smaller than 4/5% in both cases. There is an essential regional disproportion of internationalization of HE by incoming students in favor of Eastern and Southern parts of Ukraine. The overall language learning context for international students has changed from Russian (57%) to Ukrainian (49%) domination lately. The inreasing trend of broadening cooperation in the context of European Higher Education and Research Areas of the EU and partner countries through Erasmus+ and Horizon 2020 programmes is confirmed. The recent modernization of the legislation concerning HE enhances the internationalization of HE in Ukraine.     W artykule podjęto rozważania dotyczące czynników, które motywują studentów przy podjęciu decyzji o wyjeździe zagranicznym w ramach programu wymiany Unii Europejskiej Erasmus+. Omówiono teoretycznie czynniki zarówno o podłożu poznawczym, takie jak: chęć poznawania kultury kraju przyjmującego, doskonalenie kompetencji językowych uczestników, możliwość podniesienia kompetencji zawodowych, czy też te o podłożu ekonomicznym, dotyczy to na przykład czynników związanych z kosztem utrzymania się w kraju wyjazdu. Grupę badaną stanowili polscy studenci wyjeżdżający w ramach programu Erasmus+ do czeskich uczelni oraz czescy studenci przyjeżdżający do uczelni znajdujących się w Polsce. Badaniami zostali objęci studenci kierunków pedagogicznych i filologicznych, studiujący w uczelniach czeskich oraz polskich. Przedmiotem przeprowadzonych badań były czynniki motywujące studentów do wyjazdu zagranicznego w ramach programu Erasmus+ oraz takie, które mogą stwarzać bariery i trudności podczas pobytu za granicą. Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań pozwalają zauważyć, że przy wyborze kraju goszczącego przez studentów największy udział mają nie czynniki motywacyjne o podłożu poznawczym, lecz czynniki ekonomiczne, takie jak, np. koszty utrzymania – ten aspekt wskazało najwięcej osób, jako najbardziej istotny przy wyborze miejsca wyjazdu. Można stwierdzić, że studenci wyjeżdżający na częściowe studia zagraniczne w ramach programu Erasmus+ kierują się najczęściej czynnikami o podłożu ekonomicznym, a więc sam wyjazd jest dla nich przede wszystkim czasem pewnej niezależności finansowej, a czynniki o podłożu poznawczym stanowią wartość dodaną mobilności. Optymizmem napawa fakt, że studenci w grupie badanej okazali się otwarci na poznawanie kultury kraju goszczącego.
    The article refers to the factors that motivate students when making a decision to travel abroad within the framework of the European Union exchange Program Erasmus+. The article theoretically considers the factors some cognitive, such as the desire to learn the culture of the host country, improving the language competence of participants, improving professional competence, as well as those related to economy, for example, factors related to the cost of living the country of departure. The study group consisted of Polish students travelling within the Erasmus+ Program to Czech universities and Czech students coming to the universities located in Poland. The research covered students of pedagogical and philological specialties studying in Czech and Polish universities. The subject of the research were the factors of motivation of students to travel abroad in the framework of the Erasmus+ program, as well as those that can create barriers and difficulties during their stay abroad. The results of the research allow for noticing that when choosing the country of the guest students the largest share does not consist of cognitive factors, but economic factors, such as, for example, maintenance costs – this aspect is indicated by the biggest groupe as the most significant when choosing the place of departure. It can be concluded that students who travel for partial foreign studies under the Erasmus+ program are guided by the most common factors of the economic basis, and therefore the stay is for them, first of all, a time of some financial independence, and the factors of cognitive basis represent the added value of mobility. It is encouraging that the students in the group were open to study the culture of the host country.
