Opis:
In 1639, Conventual Franciscans (the Minorites) set up a small community in Poznań. However, for nearly two hundred years on the outskirts of the city there had already functioned a convent of the Order of the Minor Brothers Observants, known as Bernardines. This led to a conflict between the two convents. Bernardines rarely founded their convents in cities where there were already con- vents of the Minorites, a religious order that had existed in Poland since the 13th century. On the other hand, as Poznań achieved the status of the capital city of the region in late Middle Ages, the Minor- ites made efforts to settle down in this city. This decision resulted in decades of fierce controversies. The Minorites who wanted to settle down in Poznań were supported by the local bishop, while the Bernardines by a majority of the already existing convents and the city council. Eventually the superiors of the Minorite convent obtained the approval of the Poznań authorities to build a convent within the city walls, close to the castle. Thanks to the intervention of the new bishop, an agreement was reached in 1667 and the controversies subsided. The longest lasting disagreements between the two convents concerned the right to propagate the Loretan cult, centered on a copy of the Holy House of Mary from Nazareth. The house was said to have been miraculously transferred to Loreto in the 13th century, and around it a great Marian sanctuary developed. Finally, the right to propagate this cult in Poznan was granted to the Bernardines.

Opis:
St. Peter of Alcantara (1499-1562) is among the most outstanding representatives of the golden age of Spanish mysticism. His greatest merit lay in popularizing the theological principles of prayer in his “Treatise on Prayer and Meditation”, written in simple language. It is a compendium of the author’s profound reflections and advice on prayer which he derived from the practice of his own life, his experience as spiritual director and confessor, and from the study of ascetic works. Thanks to the efforts of the Poznań Bernardines this modest book appeared in print in Poznań in 1627 in the renowned printing house of Jan Wolrab. It is a format 12o print, bound in pig skin without any ornaments, comprising 409 pages plus an index. The text contains three engravings. One of them shows St. Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata on Mount Alvernia on 14 September 1224. There are two more engravings in the book, which confirms the opinion that Jan Wolrab paid attention to the aesthetic side of his prints.

Opis:
The Order of Reformed Franciscans, a conservative and strict branch of Franciscans, flourished in Poland mainly on the territory of Wielkopolska and Małopolska. The convent in Chocz was chronologically the third foundation in the Wielkopolska custody. Its founder was bishop Andrzej Lipski, who in order to strengthen Catholicism not only brought the Reformed Franciscans to the place but also built a collegiate church, thereby creating a complex of religious institutions in one part of the  town.In the years 1636-1639 there was a conflict between the Reformed Franciscans and the Bernardines. As a result the former were made to leave Chocz for a time. Upon return they began the construction of a new, brick church and convent (1699-1725 r.) It is worth noting that among others, Brother Mateusz Osiecki participated in the realization of the convent buildings. The church was erected in the recessed variant of the wall-pillar system and shows affinity to the Reformed Franciscan Church in Kalisz. Moreover, it is an important example of the sacral buildings of the Wielkopolska province of Reformed Franciscans. The convent was secularized in 1864 by decree of emperor Alexander II. The monks regained their right of ownership only in 1920. First, the convent buildings were used by the Order of Sisters the Shepherdesses of Divine Providence, and only later again by the Franciscans. At present the whole complex is under major restoration works.
