Opis:
The article examines film productions of London’s National Theatre, which are based on its most famous performances. The author discusses the techniques used to produce cinematic versions of the plays and analyses the methods of re-creating the theatrical experience as well as the way it affects the models of theatre reception. His starting point is the thesis that this form of transmitting the theatrical experience serves to impose a specific, mainstream cultural model whose impact is strengthened by the use of new media. Subject to the media treatment, the theatrical experience becomes more intense and gives the spectator an illusion of more direct contact with the work than a traditional visit to the theatre. The processed experience has the potential to create new cultural models whose predominant characteristic is the pleasure of reception.

Opis:
The text presents the process of transformation of the organizational structure of the Węgajty Theatre and the related reformation of the group dynamics and methods of creative work. In the group’s complex organizational history, the turning point was the loss of permanent institutional support in 2011. After twenty-five years of work under the auspices of various cultural institutions in Olsztyn, the Węgajty Theatre was forced to function as a non-governmental organization. The text shows the impact of the grant system on the Theatre's activities and its strategies developed for conducting artistic work. Węgajty's most crucial activity, if the group is considered as a formation project, is the work of the Other Theatre School. The original form of artistic education is combined at the School with a return to socially engaged issues. The text also presents the pros and cons of a social cooperative created at the Węgajty Theatre to stabilize its financial situation.

Opis:
This piece of work is an attempt, grounded in artistic practice, to describe several key aspects of the mechanisms of hierarchy, power and violence in Polish theatre taking into account the perspective of a woman director. These mechanisms are currently the subject of theoretical studies and discussions within the community. In this paper I would like to propose a look “from the inside.” There is a historical and theoretical part followed by an attempt to analyse the mechanisms of power-sharing in theatre based on a discussion on competitions for the position of theatre manager, taking into consideration the criteria that discriminated against women for years, and the unspoken assumptions. This is followed by a self-reflection on the evolution of the author’s own working methods as a director with almost twenty years of artistic experience, and finally a description of the hierarchical relationships between an actress, a director and a manager, and of the political mechanisms involved. The second part of the paper is empirical in nature and is based primarily on the author’s experience of working at the Teatr Polski in Warsaw as well as her active participation in professional and public debate. It also describes the tension between the possibility of individual professional success and the permanence of anachronistic and violent systemic mechanisms of functioning of the institution of theatre.

The article discusses and analyzes the model of operation and promotion of contemporary independent theatre companies (including their financing and organizational status), whose specifics places the alternative theatre in the background in relation to the institutional/dominant theatre. However, the main objective of the article is not to compare the repertory theatre with the off theatre, but to identify the obstacles and dangers to the alternative theatre today and the prospects for its development. The analysis is conducted in the spirit of cultural studies and aims to initiate a discussion of the financing and promotion of off theatres, an issue that is rarely the subject of detailed examinations or scientific studies. The result may be a marginalization and even disregard of the phenomenon in question, which plays an important role in Polish theatrical life.

The text is a proposal to present the specifics of activities carried out by Węgajty Theatre in the formula of the Other Theatre School, in the second decade of its existence – the years 2010-2019. The author uses categories such as process, road / walking, performative theatre, rhapsodic structure, artivism, in an attempt to present the way of creating performances in Węgajty. She employs the proposed terms with reference to the findings made in various areas of knowledge by such artists as: Arnold Mindell, Rebecca Solnit, Tadeusz Pawłowski, Jean-Paul Sarrazac as well as the practice of Ricardo Dominguez, for example. What constitutes a significant element of the research material are unpublished interviews with the founders of Węgajty Theatre and its associates conducted by the author and Joanna Kocemba-Żebrowska in the years 2018-2020.

The text portrays the Prague ensemble, whose theatrical works are only one part of its vibrant post-dramatic activity. Handa Gote has been operating on the Czech theatre scene since 2005. It is one of the most important groups that developed their theatrical language drawing inspiration not only from surrealists, but also from anthropological research, folk theatre, traditional theatre forms that are linked with the principles of DIY, technological theatre, puppet theatre. They extend their experiments into music, radio, exhibition projects and radically subversive public space events. This cultivation of artistic universality, group work, post-dramatic and post-spectacular attitudes characterize the foundations of this unique group, which also focuses on object, puppet, dance and multimedia theatre.

The phenomenon of the German theatre manager – the so-called intendant – is becoming a subject discussed at many levels, from typical academic discourse to media-catchy news about the scandals and abuses committed by this or that manager of a German theatre. These discourses propose a common diagnosis that the nearly century-old model of theatre management is no longer accepted now. My article presents the historical status of the theatre manager going back to the times of Goethe, contemporary studies and one of the most publicized cases in recent years, which involved Berlin’s Volksbühne. I also address the present situation of the Volksbühne in the context of the city’s cultural policy, audience surveys and the current problem of rising nationalist sentiment and its direct relation to theatre.

The article entitled Monumenta polskiej scenografii. Ustawienia-odsłonięcia-obchody is a discussion of the important publication Zmiana ustawienia. Historia polskiej scenografii teatralnej i społecznej XX i XXI wieku (A change of setting. History of the Polish theatre and social scenography in the 19th and 20th centuries) edited by D. Buchwald and D. Kosiński. In the three parts, entitled Settings, Unveilings and Celebrations, the author refers to the methodological assumptions of the project, analyses the contribution of each author to the ambitious research project and reflects on the inclusion of socio-political issues in the study of theatre aesthetics. The author acknowledges the groundbreaking nature of this achievement, crowned with an important scenography exhibition at the Zachęta Gallery in Warsaw authored by Robert Rumas, and enters into polemics with the individual concepts of set design analysis and reflects on the value of the work as a synthesis covering ‘the entirety of Polish scenography’ from the late 19th century to the present day.

The article is an attempt to examine the archive of letters written to the Teatr Ziemi Mazowieckiej and to reconstruct the theatre’s practices aimed at giving voice to its audience. The preserved letters allow us to ask questions about the ways of building relations with the audience by the theatre, which inspired their creation and also used them in its programmes. The content of the letters and the strategies used by their authors allow us to pose a hypothesis that the theatre’s management constructed a discourse different from that of the reviewers, who disdained the work of the theatre. The archive also allows us to postulate a counter-criticism which, unlike the hierarchically establishing criticism, uses the rhetoric of enthusiasm and care, locating a political potential in kindness and seeing in it an ability to make things happen.

This particular case is the starting point for complex research of methods and tools for ecological theatre. Una Chaudhuri’s idea of “Fifth Wall Dramaturgy” becomes the inspiration to exceed only human perspective and involve inhuman actors to the theatrical structure.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to present the characteristics of kumiodori – a unique form of theatre that developed in a particular socio-geographical environment of the Okinawa Island over 300 years ago. Created in 1719 as a political tool for an entity that exists no more, it continues to shape the identity of a nation within a nation. Nowadays Okinawa stands for one of the 47 prefectures of Japan, as well as the name of the biggest island among the Ryūkyūs, that once constituted the core territory of the Ryūkyū Kingdom - a tributary state in the sphere of Chinese and Japanese influence. Officially these are known in Japan as Nansei (Southwestern) Islands, since geographically they form an island bridge connecting Japan with the Asian Continent, not so far from the Tropic of Cancer. This interplay of power relations, as well as the environmental factors were formative for the Ryūkyūan culture and can be found in the characteristics of the performing arts that developed on Okinawa, such as kumiodori. Sophisticated dialogue between the Japanese and Chinese thought systems can be found in its aesthetics and lyrics. Both influences are distinctive in music and song verse, while the maritime and tropical character of the natural environment, represented by the vivid colours of the turquoise ocean, multicoloured coral reef and flowers or evergreen bushes brightened by the scorching sun are clearly visible in set design, props or costumes. This article introduces the kumiodori as a form of art that developed not only as an entertainment, but also in order to reassure harmony with the neighbouring countries and yet represent the distinctive value of the Ryūkyū Kingdom. Kumiodori is a theatre genre that describes in its form the delicate process of turning pride into identity. Starting with historical outline and examples of representative kumiodori performances, with its characteristics described and compared to the culturally closest Japanese nō theatre, this article also touches on the current state of the kumiodori theatre in Japan. It is intended as an introduction and invitation to experience this genre that is unique to Okinawa Prefecture, and to provoke further consideration on the role that the geopolitical situation played in the formation of kumiodori.
