S6-high rolling mill
Opis:
Chatter in rolling mills is the undesirable vibration observed in most of the rolling mills operating at high speed and rolling thin strip. In this work the authors discuss some problems relative to the vibrations occurring in a S6-high cold rolling mill. It can result in not good surface finish for some applications and, rare cases, in gauge variations in the rolled strip and it is considered to be the result of interaction between rolling mill structure and rolling-process. Three basic types of chatter can be classified in rolling mills: torsional, third-octave mode, and fifth-octave-mode chatter. S6-high rolling mill is an innovative mode to work the steel: it allows the use of very small work rolls laterally guided by individually adjustable side support rolls, which are supported by two rows of roller bearings mounted in cassettes. It has six rolls able to roll steel strip coming directly from hot rolling mill train. A proposed solution based on empirical observations, vibration analysis and considerations of a model is described with the aim to improve the quality of the product and increasing production.

The gas turbine is considered to be a very complex piece of machinery because of both its static structure and the dynamic behavior that results from the occurrence of vibration phenomena. It is required to adopt monitoring and diagnostic procedures for the identification and localization of vibration flaws in order to ensure the appropriate operation of large rotating equipment such as gas turbines. This is necessary in order to avoid catastrophic failures and deterioration and to ensure that proper operation occurs. Utilizing an approach that is based on spectrum analysis, the purpose of this study is to provide a model for the monitoring and diagnosis of vibrations in a GE MS3002 gas turbine and its driven centrifugal compressor. This will be done by utilizing the technique. Following that, the collection of vibration measurements for a model of the centrifugal compressor served as a suggestion for an additional method. This method is based on the neuro-fuzzy approach type ANFIS, and it aims to create an equivalent system that is able to make decisions without consulting a human being for the purpose of detecting vibratory defects. In spite of the fact that the compressor that was investigated has flaws, this procedure produced satisfactory results.

Opis:
Fault diagnosis of an internal combustion engine is proposed herein by means of vibration analysis and a comparative analysis of normal operation and induced misfire scenarios. In order to validate previous works on misfire with pure gasoline, measurements also included tests performed with ethanol-gasoline fuel blends. According to results, changes in the fuel mix seem to have little impact on the performance and behaviour of the engine. And additionally, the particular frequency components that allowed differentiation between normal and faulty conditions were also present on all the fuel blends tested. Fast Fourier Transform was applied to obtain the frequency domain of the signal as a previous step to the subsequent identification process based on statistical characteristics extraction. A fuel blend classification method based on the analysis of the vibration signals of the engine was studied using envelope, Spike Energy and Peak Value techniques. Differentiation was possible with the extraction of the statistical features of the Peak Value spectrum of the longitudinal acceleration with a specific filter selection.

Opis:
Detecting manufacturing defects of bearings are difficult because of their unique topography. To find adequate methods for diagnosis is important because they could be responsible for serious problems. Wavelet transform is an efficient tool for analyzing the transients in the vibration signal. In this article we are focusing on industrial grinding faults on the outer ring of tapered roller bearings. Nine different real-valued wavelets, Symlet-2, Symlet-5, Symlet-8, Daubechies (2, 6, 10, 14), Morlet and Meyer wavelets are compared to a designed complex Morlet wavelet according to the Energy-to-Shannon-Entropy ratio criteria to determine which is the most efficient for detecting the manufacturing fault. Parameters of the complex Morlet wavelet are adjustable, thus, it has more flexibility for feature extraction. Genetic algorithm is applied to optimize the center frequency and the bandwidth of the designed wavelet. A sophisticated filtering procedure through multi-resolution analysis is applied with autocorrelation enhancement and envelope detection. To determine the efficiency of the designed wavelet and compare to the other wavelets, a test-rig was constructed equipped with high-precision sensors and devices. The designed wavelet is found to be the most effective to detect the manufacturing fault. Therefore, it has the capacity for an industrial testing procedure.

Opis:
Cavitation is a common cause of failure in centrifugal pumps. Because of interaction of several mechanical parts and fluid, the vibration signal of a centrifugal pump is complicated. In this paper, the vibrations of a transparent-casing centrifugal pump are studied. Three states are studied experimentally: no cavitation, limited cavitation and developed cavitation. Each case was also confirmed by visually inspecting the cavitation bubbles. The vibrations of the pump was acquired by using an accelerometer that was attached to the casing. Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) analysis and empirical mode decomposition (EMD) are used to extract classification features from the acquired signals. Using these features, an artificial neural network (ANN) successfully diagnosed the cavitation condition of the pump. Finally, EEMD is also implemented. The results showed the success of EMD and DWT in cavitation diagnosis. The output of EEMD does not show significant change comparing to EMD.

Opis:
A gravity damper is a one-way valve, employed for regulating the airflow rate in ducts, generally constituted by a series of rectangular panels (closure sections), connected to an articulated quadrilateral synchronizing the movements. If the device needs to process large masses of high speed air, as common in the case of energy conversion systems, disadvantageous dynamic effects can occur. In this study, vortexinduced vibration (VIV), occurring on a gravity damper for high values of the Reynolds number, is investigated. The analysis of this work couples numerical methods (Computational Fluid Dynamics with Large-Eddy Simulation turbulence model and Finite Element Method) to experiments: a full-scale accelerometric measurement campaign is actually performed at the wind tunnel facilities of the University of Perugia. VIVs are diagnosed and quantified through the experimental vibration analysis, which is interpreted through numerical simulations. The large amplitude of VIV is interpreted as due to a tendency towards lockin because of the approaching of the vortex shedding frequency to a natural vibration mode of the system. The integrated numerical and experimental framework finally inspires two different design solutions for mitigating the amplitude of VIV: these strategies are tested at the wind tunnel and they are indeed shown to be effective.

Opis:
Gearboxes are one of the most important and widely exposed to different types of faults in machines. Therefore, manufacturers and researchers have made significant efforts to develop different fault detection and diagnostic approaches for gearboxes. However, many research foundations, such as universities, are currently working on developing different gearbox test rigs to understand the failure mechanisms in gearboxes. As a result, in this article, a gearbox testing rig was proposed and fabricated to evaluate gear performance under lowspeed working conditions. It describes the primary mechanical apparatus and the measurement tools used during the experimental analysis of a multistage gearbox transmission system. The data-gathering equipment used to acquire the observed vibration data is also discussed. LabVIEW software was used to build a data acquisition platform using an accelerometer and a NI DAQ device. Then different vibration tests were conducted under different operating conditions, when the gearbox was healthy and then faulty, on this test rig, and the gathered vibration data were analyzed based on time domain signal analysis. The preliminary results are promising and open the horizon for simulating different gearbox test scenarios.

Opis:
Mechanical vibrations are a common problem encountered in many machines, especially for vertical turbine pumps. These pumps are generally difficult to stiffen or damp, but the effective diagnosis must begin with an understanding of the underlying vibratory sources. In the present work, a deep well vertical turbine pump experienced extremely high vibrations for a long time although it still being new. It hasn't been in operation for over 6 months. The pump system suffers from extremely high vibration levels relative to the rotational speed (1X motor dominant frequency). An efficient strategy was implemented by using well-conceived techniques. The experimental modal analysis confirmed a presence of a natural frequency. Modifications were carried out to overcome resonance. Finite element analysis was done to determine the reed critical frequencies as a powerful tool to identify and mitigate vibration issues. On-site motor balancing was done to remove vibrations due to the residual imbalance. Results revealed decreasing vibration level by about 66% after solving all problems.

Frequency domain based signal processing methods such as cepstrum analysis, Hilbert Transform based demodulation, cyclostationary analysis, etc have been shown to present a quite effective behaviour in the detection of defects, when applied to the analysis of vibration signals, resulting from gear pairs with one or more defective gears. However, these methods typically require some complex and sophisticated analysis, which renders their application cumbersome for applications requiring unskilled personnel or automated fault detection and trending. Alternatively to these methods, morphological analysis for processing vibration signals has been proposed, addressing the issues of how to quantify the shape and the size of the signals directly in the time domain. Morphological analysis and the resulting morphological index is applied in this paper to a set of twelve successive vibration measurements resulting from a gearbox prior to tooth breakage. As shown, the morphological index is able monitor the evolution of the potential fault, providing a clear warning prior to the breakage of the tooth.

Wind turbine condition monitoring is essential task in the process of maintaining machine operation at the optimal level. It is related to ensuring the profitability of investment and the provision of security in the environment of the turbine. However, the working conditions of turbine associated with non-stationary nature of the stimulus which is wind, impede the correct diagnosis of the machine. In addition, a multitude of parameters adversely affects the clarity of predictions and setting alarm thresholds. In the article, the authors evaluate the impact of power generator and bearing rotational speed on the root-mean-square (RMS) value received on the generator bearing. The study was performed in various dynamic states of the bearing: the intact and after discovery of damage. It was possible due to long term monitoring of the system and further analysis of the RMS as a function of power and rotational speed. For this purpose the method that bases on calculation of arithmetic mean of the data in the segments corresponding to the chosen ranges of both rotational speed and generator output power. Results are presented in the form of three-dimensional charts, which allow assessing the impact of parameters on the estimator. As observed, a greater impact on the RMS has the power which reveals as more dynamic changes of RMS to the fluctuation of power. The variation of rotational speed does not affect RMS so rapidly. This was confirmed by an analysis of the slope the function obtained by linear regression. Therefore, it might lead to the conclusion that operational state of wind turbines should be assessed due to generated power level not in respect to rotational speed.

Installations and the detection of their faults has become a major challenge. In order to develop a reliable approach for monitoring and diagnosis faults of these components, a test rig was mounted. In this article, a Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP) Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has been structured and optimized for online monitoring of induction motors. The input layer of our ANN used eight indicators calculated from the collected time signals and which represent the different states of the motor (Healthy, broken rotor bars, bearing fault and Misalignment) and the output layer used a codified matrix. However, based on L27 Taguchi design, the architecture for the hidden layers of our network is chosen, with the use of the LevenbergMarquardt learning algorithm. Garson's algorithm and connection weight approach showed that there's a great sensitivity of the crest factor, the kurtosis and the variance on the effectiveness of our diagnostic system. Consequently, the obtained results are capable of detecting faults in the induction motor under different operating conditions.
