Opis:
The research was conducted on explants of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) deriving from several forest districts in southern Poland. The study encompassed the influence of the origin of plant material, type of explants, kind of substances used for explants sterilization, PPM and the type of medium on the ability to form embryogenic callus and to develop somatic embryos in silver fir explants. From the plant material collected in three sites, 57 clones were obtained from mature zygotic embryos; this produced an embryogenesis frequency of 6%. Embryogenic callus was obtained with a diameter of 65–70 mm depending on the material origin. The best medium for development of callus inducted on embryos isolated from mature silver fir seeds was the SH medium. Somatic embryos were formed in a globular stadium (24 pieces) on this medium. The 10% solution of NaOCl (used for 15 minutes) turned out to be the most effective substance for seed sterilization.

Opis:
The UE-imposed restrictions on the manufacture and use of plant protection chemicals necessitate screening for new substances that are more environmentally friendly. Biopreparations may constitute such a group; therefore, studies on their efficiency in the production of plant material are needed. This study evaluated the effects of two biostimulators on rhizogenesis and the gas exchange rate (respiration, photosynthesis, transpiration) of stem cuttings of dogwood (Cornus alba) as compared to conventional treatments with a rooting powder containing 2% auxin IBA and with aqueous IBA solution. Both biopreparations enhanced rhizogenesis; their efficiency varied depending on the cultivar, biostimulator applied, and the number of treatments. There was no relationship between rhizogenesis and physiological parameters tested. The experiments demonstrated that at least some biopreparations have potential in commercial production but their effectiveness may be different in different species and under different conditions.

The available phytosociological literature were reviewed and compared with 12 original relevés made on representative of habitats of fir trees in the study area. Only in the eastern part of the Sudety Mts. silver-fir is still important forest tree. It is found most frequently in potential sites of acidophilic beech forest, which vegetation is now strongly transformed because of planting them with spruce. Typical, mainly acidophilic beech forest takes second place (in respect of frequent occurrence). Oak-hornbeam forest take third position.

The growth of hyphae and prepenetration phenomena on Abies alba roots after inoculation with the P-, S- and F-group isolates of Heterobasidion annosum were observed using scanning electron microscope. Elongated hyphae emanating from the inocula grew indiscriminately across and along root tips and entered the cortical cells randomly, while in subapical root areas they quite often grew along grooves at points of cell junctions. The ridges, folds and depressions seen on the root surface obviously directed the hyphal growth and their further entrance into roots through natural crevices or cracks. Although hyphae of all the isolates could penetrate the roots directly through small openings, the hyphae of the F isolate penetrated preferably more eroded and older parts of roots. A peculiar habit of the direct penetration, characterized by formation a structure resembling infection peg, was observed only after inoculation with the P and S isolates. It is suggested that specifically frequent penetration the roots in eroded areas by the hyphae of the F isolate may be one of the factors connecting with its lower pathogenic capabilities.

Opis:
Taxus baccata L. is a rare and endangered dioecious species in Europe. Species of this mating system are considered to be the most vulnerable to extinction. It is believed that one reason for this state may be the uneven reproductive effort and different habitat requirements of the two sexes. Silver fir and European yew have very similar ecological requirements, but fir is a monoecious species. The aim of this study was to compare the growth rate andthe effect of precipitation andtemperature on the annual tree-ring width of silver fir and both sexes of European yew. The study site was the Knyazhdvir reserve in western Ukraine, located near the limit of the geographical range of both species. Knyazhdvir reserve is the site of one of the last yew populations in Europe with a large number of individuals (about 15,000 individuals above 1.3 m height) growing alongside fir.Woodsamples were taken from 15 male and15 female specimens of T. baccata andfrom 15 specimens of A. alba and were subjected to a standard dendrochronological procedure. The results showed high positive correlation between the temperatures in February andMarch andthe tree-ring width in the studied species and genders. The response of annual tree-ring width to the examined climatic factors was relatively similar in yew andfir. However slight differences were foundbetween males andfemales of T. baccata. The growth rate decreased more rapidly in females compared to males, probably following sexual maturation. Precipitation in April hada positive effect on firs andfemale yews, but not on male yews. This confirms earlier reports of the requirement of female specimens of dioecious species for a higher humidity than male individuals.

Opis:
In this paper, is presented data on the abundance and age structure of natural regeneration of silver fir in permanent plots in Sudety Mts. In the studied plots the abundance of fir seedlings is usually markedly lower than in the well-regenerating Carpathian forest stands. The major reason for this is the lower contribution of fir trees to forest stands in the Sudety Mts. as compared with the Carpathians. In most plots the process of regeneration is long and extended over many years. Largest numbers of seedlings developed in years of good fir cone crops. An important role in the process of natural regeneration of Abies alba in the Sudety Mts. are played by type of site, kind of humus and herb layer density. Most of the studied forest stands in the Sudety are not dense, so the herb layer is well-developed, that strongly restrain fir regeneration especially in fartile soils.

The purpose of this study was to determine the basic physico-chemical properties of soil in silver fir stands with different stage of natural regeneration. The investigations were carried out in south-west part of Poland – in the Sudety Mountains. From 854 silver fir stands, 40 testing sites, varying in terms of habitat conditions and degree of natural regeneration, were selected. Soil samples were collected from litter (organic horizon – O) with a thickness of 7–15 cm and from mineral A horizon lying up to 20 cm below the organic horizon and were then analysed for pH, EC, C org., total N, exchangeable cations (Ca, Mg, K, Na, H and Al), soluble Mn, Fe, Zn and Pb as well as particle size distribution (samples from A horizon). The analysed soil samples are characterized by very high acidity and low content of bases. According to the performed statistical tests, none of the factors analysed within the samples tested has a significant impact on the natural regeneration of silver fir. The only dependence between potassium content in soil and the regeneration of silver fir in the Sudety Mountains is close to statistically significance.

Data from floristic publications, forest management records, comprehensive questionnaires and original field research were used to assess the silver fir resources in the Sudety Mts. Fir trees older than 50 years were recorded in over 2000 localities but the mean number of individuals per locality was only about 15. The generally low number of fir trees and their considerable dispersion are the major causes of the poor reproduction of the studied species in the Sudety Mts. In that region, silver fir should receive special treatment and, if possible, excluded from logging plans. Current and projected activities concerned with fir protection are described briefly.

The purpose of this study was to determine changes which occurred during 23 years (1974–1997) in four stands in respect of species composition, structure, developmental stages and phases. In 1997 the Walusiowka stand represented the growing up stage, phase of a multistory structure, and during the study period its volume decreased from 698 to 676 m3/ha.The Przełęcz Sosnow stand was in the growing up stage, phase of a little diversified storied structure and regeneration, and its volume decreased from 696 to 622 m3/ha.The Grodek stand during the entire study period was in the growing up stage, phase of the selection forest structure and regeneration, and its volume increased from 529 to 585 m3/ha.The Facimiech stand in 1997 was in the optimum stage, phase of aging and regeneration, and its volume decreased from 688 to 661 m3/ha.During 1974–1997 the percentage of fir (Abies alba) considerably decreased in three stands (Walusiowka from 46 to 33%, Przełęcz Sosnow from 58 to 36%, Grodek from 42 to 24%).The Facimiech stand was almost a pure fir stand during the entire control period. In the Przełęcz Sosnow stand, due to a rapid mortality of fir and presence of vital trees of beech (Fagus sylvatica) of the growing up and optimum growth generations, the break up stage did not take place but the growing up stage had developed, which indicated the disturbance of the natural cycle of the primeval forest described by Korpel’. A scarce presence of fir upgrowth and prevalence of beech in stands composed of these two species permits to suppose that fir will be retreating in favor of beech.

The study presents the structure and floristic composition of mixed fir forest at the northern range limit of European silver fir (Abies alba) in Poland. Phytosociological data were collected in the forest reserve “Murowaniec”,which was established to protect mixed forest ecosystems with a large contribution of fir trees. Changes in floristic composition of these coniferous forests in the last 40 years were discussed. Protective measures are suggested in this paper, aiming at conservation of the forest ecosystems of the reserve.

Sudeteny Mts. are a region where the level of industrial air pollution was very high due to brown coal combustion. In this paper I presents the assessments concerning the fir stand quality class and crown vitality. The study were carried out between 1999 and 2001 and supplemented with studies made in 1997 and 2005. My conclusions are based on measurements of 3529 fir trees representing 481 populations of this species in different parts of the Sudety Mts. The stand quality class of the fir in the Sudety Mts. are better than expected but about 0,5 degree lower than in the Carpathians. Our results confirm the reports concerning the strong and very strong damage of fir crowns in the Sudety Mts. in the 1990’s. It was calculated that the average fir in the Sudety Mts. stands has a primary crown with a length that is approximately 19% of the total tree height and which is damaged in approximately 36%. At approximately 23% of the total height the average fir develops a regeneration crown. An additional factor which contributed to fir damage was their frequent presence in thinned stands. In these places the process of crown reconstruction from a wide to a denser is observed. In the recent years the level of industrial pollution in the Sudety Mts. has been strongly reduced. This particularly concerns sulphur oxides. This has contributed to the improvement of the crown health of the studied species, but the crown regeneration is slower than the trunk diameter increment. The crown damages have so far been proportional to the altitude. Trees which grow in stands located in lower areas have healthier crowns. Trees which grow in broken canopy and on hilltops are more vulnerable to the impact of pollution carried by wind and fog. The severe damage to the top parts of the crown has a negative effect on the cone crop of the fir.

From among three stands, situated in the lower mountain zone, and representing the association Dentario-glandulosae Fagetum, the Łopuszna I stand, being in the growing up stage and phase of selection forest, reached the highest increment (8.5 m3/ha/year, i.e. 1.3% of actual stand volume/ha measured at the end of the control period). Stands, Łopuszna II, being in the stage of an intensive break-up, and Łopuszna III, being in the stage of an initial break-up, reached smaller increments (5.4 and 6.3 m3/ha/year respectively, i.e. each 0.9% of actual stand volume/ha). The greatest tree mortality occurred in stands Łopuszna II and III (14.1 and 10.5 m3/ha/year respectively), and the smallest in the stand Łopuszna I (4.8 m3/ha/year). The knowledge about the value of mortality, recruitment, and increment, expressed in the number of trees and in volume units, may greatly help in planning the amount of cut which would secure sustainability of the forest ecosystem in the layer of trees in the economic as well as in the protection forests, under similar stand and site conditions, managed by the selection cutting permitting to realize the conception of a close-to-nature silviculture.

Until recently, the level of industrial air pollution in the Sudetes (a mountain range extending on the Czech Republic and Poland border) was very high. This caused a large-scale forest decline, especially in the western part of the Polish Sudetes: in the Izerskie and Karkonosze Mts. An analysis of data on fir defoliation in that area, collected directly after the period of heavy industrial pollution, showed a clear dependence of the degree of defoliation of the primary crown on canopy density: the lower the density, the higher the degree of defoliation.

The silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) in the area of Wał Trzebnicki is at the northern limit of its distribution in western Poland. This study was performed in three nature reserves with protected silver fir populations. The stands in these reserves were mixed, with complex spatial structure and abundant tree regeneration. The proportion of fir in stands was around 16% of DBHS, the age of trees reached around 130 years. The silver fir occurs mainly in the sapling stage, whereas the number of seedlings was very low. The results of this study show the influence of forest floor vegetation as well as litter type on the emergence of fir seedlings. The seedlings density was compared with the results of other studies from different geographical areas and stands type in Poland.
