Opis:
At the conceptual stage of design, designers only have vague ideas of initial shapes which they gradually refine. These imprecise shapes may be specified by a set of fuzzy shape descriptors which represent the intent of a designer. It is also desirable to be able to save them in a database for future reference or for use as initial shapes for new designs. Most research on fuzzy databases has been focused on theoretical aspects while a fuzzy database is rarely seen in practice, especially in the design area. This paper aims to construct a fuzzy shape database to support shape design by integrating fuzzy data processing and fuzzy querying functions into a conventional database. A possibility-based framework is used for a fuzzy relational database model.

Opis:
Spatial databases present challenges to data management not found in typical RDBMS. Among these is the desire of users for highly distributed access to data. A new peer to peer database model is being developed that supports high distribution and concurrency of information access. Some aspects of the model are presented in this paper. However the new peer to peer model faces the critical problem of how to lock data as it becomes highly distributed. Conceptual methods borrowed from decision support and data mining are proposed to create a new type of locking model based on 3D volumetrics. The methods and mathematics proposed in this paper can become the basis for the implementation of a new type of peer to peer based spatial database system where spatial information flows to where it is needed on demand.

Opis:
We propose a new approach to the bipolar database queries, which involve a necessary (required) and optional (desired) conditions, connected with a non-conventional aggregation operator “and possibly”, combined with a context, exemplified by “find houses which are cheap and – with respect to other houses in town – possibly close to a railroad station”. We use our winnow operator based interpretation of the bipolar queries. We assume that the query, posed by the human user, involves terms, which do not directly relate to attributes, and which are then to be decoded using a concept of a query hierarchy, leading to the queries, which involve terms directly related to attribute values. The original query is considered to be of level 0, at the bottom of the precisiation hierarchy, then its required and optional parts are assumed to be bipolar queries themselves, both accounting for context. The precisiation proceeds further, to level 1 queries, level 2, etc. A real estate related example is provided as illustration.

Opis:
The so-called linguistic summaries of databases are the semi-natural language sentences that enable distilling the most relevant information from large numbers of tuples, and present it in the human consistent forms. Recently, the methods of constructing and evaluating linguistic summaries have been based on Zadeh's fuzzy sets, which represent uncertain data. The main aim of the paper is to enhance and generalize the Yager's approach to linguistic summarization of data. This enhancement is based on interval-valued fuzzy sets. The newly presented methods enable handling fuzzy concepts, whose membership degrees are not given by real values explicitly, but are approximated by intervals in [0,1]. From now on, the Yager's approach can be viewed as a special case of the method presented in this paper. Finally, illustrative examples are presented.
