Opis:
One of the main difficulties associated with the use of FAME biofuel (fatty acid methyl esters) in its pure form as a motor fuel is its destructive effect on fuel system components made with traditional materials. This applies to both elements made out of metal (corrosive effect), as well as synthetic materials. This study attempts to assess the impact of FAME biofuel on sealing elements of fuel filters, which are made of fluorine rubber and nitrile butadiene rubber. The results showed that the mechanical properties of fluorine rubber do not change in the conditions of prolonged contact with FAME. Thus, it can be safely used in fuel systems for engines fueled with FAME as a neat fuel.

W pracy przedstawiono analizę wpływu zmiany drożności filtra cząstek stałych na właściwości dynamiczne turbosprężarki Garrett GT 1544V. Zmianę drożności filtra symulowano za pomocą zaworu kulowego umieszczonego w układzie wylotowym silnika. Podstawowym parametrem pracy turbosprężarki rozważanym w ocenie była prędkość obrotowa wirnika. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań wykazano występowanie znacznego zmniejszenia prędkości obrotowej wirnika turbosprężarki, w przypadku spadku drożności układu wylotowego.
An impact assessment of patency changes’ in diesel particle filters on dynamic characteristics of Garrett 1544V turbocharger has been presented in article. Changes in filters patency were simulated thanks to ball valve which was placed in engine exhaust system. Speed of turbine was main parameter of turbocharger’s operation which was taken into consideration during assessment. On the basis of realized investigations it was demonstrated that in case of patency decreasing there is significant decreasing of turbine rotor speed.

The article presents ceramic and metal substrate filtration efficiency in the particulate filter of a spark-ignition engine with direct fuel injection. Gaseous exhaust components were taken into account. There are many publications on the solid particles mass and number reduction, so the authors examined the effect of catalytic carriers on gaseous compounds, such as CO, NOx, THC, whose content also poses a threat to human health and life, and this issue is not often described in the literature dedicated to measurements of modern internal combustion engines. During the tests, the length and carrier material effect on the emission of harmful substances in exhaust gases was determined.

Opis:
A long service life of heavy-duty diesel vehicles results in a large number of older-technology trucks and buses of various types running on roads nowadays. Cleaning up exhaust gases of these older vehicles gives an opportunity to improve air quality at affordable costs. Retrofitting older buses with diesel particulate filters (DPF) is a cost-effective measure to quickly and efficiently reduce particulate matter (PM) emissions and contribute to mitigation of air pollution in urban conglomerates. In this paper, the milestones on a way to wide-scale retrofitting of heavy-duty vehicles with DPF are discussed on the example of Israel DPF retrofit program. Crucial importance of a balanced governmental approach combining regulation and economic incentives, together with collaboration of government, academia and vehicle operators, is underlined. Main results of the one-year pilot project focused on urban and intercity buses are discussed. Impact of DPF retrofitting on particulate emissions and engine performance and maintenance aspects of in-use diesel buses is analyzed. Very high particle filtration efficiency (in average, about 97%) together with relatively low fuel economy penalty (0.6–1.8%, depending on the bus type) are proved. Vital importance of careful monitoring and correct maintenance of DPF-equipped vehicles is underlined.

Opis:
This paper describes the methodology and test results of diesel particulate filter (DPF) functional testing performed on non-road compression ignition engine application installed on test bed. The scope of work included testing of various DPF regeneration strategies, backpressure and balance point tests and emission performance evaluation during a legislative test cycle. The aim of this study was to observe and investigate the influence of raw exhaust gas parameters on DPF functionality in terms of filtration efficiency, soot loading, type and duration of the regeneration and emission performance. Under investigation was the capability of soot burning rate and fuel penalty. The DPF sample under test was part of the complete exhaust aftertreatment system (ATS) which consisted of: a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a DPF and a selective catalytic reduction system (SCR) with urea dosing and ammonia slip catalyst (ASC). Testing was carried out on a heavy-duty diesel engine installed on a test stand with a dynamic dynamometer and equipped with an emission bench. The test program allowed to assess the engine matching to exhaust aftertreatment system with regard to emissions compliance, in-service operation and necessary engine control unit (ECU) calibration works. The results show the influence of the DPF regeneration strategy on its duration and on the soot mass burn rate. Passive DPF regeneration was a favorable mode of DPF cleaning, due to lack of fuel penalty and lower aging impact on the entire ATS. Optimization of soot flow rate, exhaust gas temperature and the chemistry of the DOC/DPF was further recommended to ensure the long-term durability of the entire system.

The nanoparticles (NP) count concentrations are limited in EU for all Diesel passenger cars since 2013 and for gasoline cars with direct injection (GDI) since 2014. For the particle number (PN) of MPI gasoline cars there are still no legal limitations. In the present paper some results of investigations of nanoparticles from five DI and four MPI gasoline cars are represented. The measurements were performed at vehicle tailpipe and in CVS-tunnel. Moreover, five variants of “vehicle – GPF” were investigated. The PN-emission level of the investigated GDI cars in WLTC without GPF is in the same range of magnitude very near to the actual limit value of 6.0 × 1012 1/km. With the GPF’s with better filtration quality, it is possible to lower the emissions below the future limit value of 6.0 × 1011 1/km. The modern MPI vehicles also emit a considerable amount of PN, which in some cases can attain the level of Diesel exhaust gas without DPF and can pass over the actual limit value for GDI (6.0 × 1012 1/km). The GPF-technology offers in this respect further potentials to reduce the PN-emissions of traffic.

Opis:
Biofuels represent one of the alternatives to obtain the CO2 - neutral propulsion of IC-engines. Butanol, which can be produced from biomass, is considered and was investigated in the last years due to the very advantageous characteristics of this alternative fuel. Butanol can be easily and irreversibly blended both with light (gasoline) and heavier (diesel) fuels. Comparing with ethanol it has the advantages of: higher calorific value, lower hygroscopicity and lower corrosivity. It can replace the aviation fuels. This paper presents the emission results obtained on two diesel passenger cars with different technology (Euro 2 and Euro 6c) and with addition of butanol to diesel fuel, as a part of the research project DiBut (diesel and butanol). Interesting results are given about some non-legislated (non-regulated) components, acetaldehyde (MeCHO) and formaldehyde (HCHO) and about the PN-emissions with/without DPF.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to verify the criteria for selecting pleated filter partitions used in passenger car engine filters. The paper presents the problem of optimizing pleated air filters in the direction of minimizing pressure drop, which is the source of engine energy losses. Two criteria for selection of a paper filter partition for specific operating conditions of the filter and the engine are presented: criterion of permissible separation speed and criterion of permissible pressure drop. The actual filtration area of 44 paper pleated filter elements used in passenger cars and the air stream flowing through the filter were determined, which made it possible to calculate separation speed. In 62% of the analyzed filter inserts, the calculated separation speeds are within the speed range recommended by the constructors, ʋFmax = 0.06-0.12 m/s. Exceeding permissible separation speed ʋFmax = 0.12 m/s was found mainly in supercharged engines. Negative effects of engine operation with an air filter with too small separation area are presented, in the form of increased pressure drop and energy loss of the engine as well as shorter car mileage to reach permissible pressure drop.

Opis:
The aim of the article was to analyze changes in the trends of selected physical, chemical and functional properties of lubricating engine oil operating in a diesel-engine vehicle equipped with DPF. The vehicle was operated mainly in urban driving conditions (app. 70%), which impeded the DPF regeneration cycle and caused dilution of oil with unburned fuel. Changes in the following physical and chemical properties were assessed: the DF level in engine oil, viscosity (kinematic, dynamic HTHS and structural CCS), total base number, acid number as well as the degree of oxidation, nitration and sulphonation. The tests have shown that the amount of unburned fuel that goes to the engine crankcase due to the unfinished DPF regeneration cycle is as high as 26.0-34.6%. Dilution of the lubricating oil with fuel leads to a significant reduction of its viscosity - about 30% of the fuel content causes a decrease in the kinematic viscosity measured at 100°C to the level of 7.7 mm2/s. There was also a significant decrease in total base number (TBN) < 2 mg KOH/g, and an increase in the total acid number (TAN). Moreover, the results obtained were analyzed for potential effects that could have been caused during prolonged engine operation by assessing the content of trace elements in the samples taken.

The paper presents an analysis of the design of air cleaners in performance vehicles. The paper confirms that their fundamental property is a much lower flow resistance compared to standard air cleaners. The consequences of replacing a standard air filter element with a performance one have been described. The impact of this modification i.e. an increase (decrease) in the engine torque and power output has been shown. A need to perform tests related to the filtration properties of performance air cleaners has been indicated. A methodology of laboratory research has been developed for performance vehicle air cleaners. The results of the research on the filtration efficiency and accuracy characteristics have been presented along with the flow resistance of air filter elements/air cleaners depending on the dust absorbance coefficient km. The accuracy of the filter element has been evaluated following a Pamas particle counter measurement.

Opis:
The knowledge about nanoaerosols, their potential health effects, their measurement, limitation and administrative-legal treatment has been developed in the last 3 decades in connection with the exhaust gas cleaning of the combustion engines. Nanofiltration, which has thus become known, almost completely eliminates nanoparticles with filters of high durability, high specific filtration areas, and reasonable costs. On the occasion of the Covid pandemic, NanoCleanAir experimentally proved that the viruses in an automotive filter substrate are separated as well as the combustion particles and are also deactivated. To minimize cross exchange of infectious aerosol, new attention must be paid to flow management in ventilated spaces. Digitized flow analysis has also received significant inspiration from engine technology in the past. This paper provides information on some basic investigations and gives valuable advice based on the experimental and numerical results of a retrofitted classroom.

This paper provides a general review of light-duty (LD) and heavy-duty (HD) regulations, engine technology, and key emission control strategies. The US is placing a stronger emphasis on laboratory emissions, and the LD regulations are about an order of magnitude tighter than Euro 6, but Europe is focusing on real-world reductions. The California HD low-NOx regulation is advancing and may be proposed in 2017/18 for implementation in 2023+. The second phase of US HD greenhouse gas regulations propose another 25-30% tightening beyond Phase 1, beginning in 2021. LD and HD engine technology continues showing marked improvements in engine efficiency. LD gasoline concepts are closing the gap with diesel. HD engines are demonstrating more than 50% BTE using methods that can reasonably be commercialized. LD and HD diesel NOx technology trends are also summarized. NOx storage catalysts and SCR combinations are the lead approach to meeting the LD regulations. Numerous advanced NOx technologies are being evaluated and some promise for meeting the California HD low NOx targets. Oxidation catalysts are improved for both diesel and methane oxidation applications. Gasoline particulate filters (GPF) are the lead approach to reducing particles from gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines. They reduce PAH emissions, and catalyzed versions can be designed for low back pressure. Regeneration largely occurs during hot decelerations.

Nanofiber properties, and the possibilities of their application in industry, including the production of car air intake filtration materials for vehicle engines are discussed. The attention is paid to the low efficiency of standard filtration materials based on cellulose in the range of dust grains below 5 μm. The properties of filtration materials with nanofibers addition are described. The conditions, and methodology of material filter paper tests at the station with particle counter were developed. Studies on the filtration characteristics, such as: efficiency, accuracy, as well as pressure drop of filtration materials differing in structure were made: standard paper, cellulose, and these materials with the addition of nanofibers. These are commonly used filter materials for filter inserts production of car air intake systems. Test results show significantly higher values of the efficiency, and filtration accuracy of materials with nanofiber layer addition of dust grains below 5 μm in comparison with standard filter paper. It was found that there are 16 μm dust grains in the air flow behind the insert made out of cellulose, which may be the reason for the accelerated wear of the engine's "piston-piston ring-cylinder" association. Lower values of dust mass loading coefficient km for filtration materials with the addition of nanofiber layer, in relation to standard filter paper were observed.
