Opis:
Calabria is a region where we may find many traces of very old settlements and the development of human civilization, because it was already inhabited during the Paleolithic Era. Its later, over two thousand years history is characterized by the influence of such ethno-cultural groups as the Greeks, the Brutti, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Saracens and the Normans. Hence, Calabria has become an infinite source of fascination for all who seek the remains of ancient times in Italy. The purpose of my article is to present the history of Scolacium – one of the ancient towns in the Italian province of Calabria basing, above all, on selected literary evidence on the issue. My studies concentrate mainly on pointing out the numerous references and allusions to its name and on the analysis of longer or shorter depictions of the town found in various Greek and Roman literary works and their application in a chronological reconstruction of the town’s past events as an example of historical processes observed on the territory of Magna Graecia.

An example of this formula usage is the prayer utterance of one of the national epic’s charac- ter, the Annals of Quintus Ennius (Ann. I 26 Skutsch). Since, for the purposes of literary research, significant is only the first triad of this historic poem, the research was limited to Book I of the work. The realism of portrayed events is a dominant feature of the world depicted in the analyzed work and, in an essential manner, it influenced Roman religious ideals. The prayer of Aeneas to Tiber- inus – the god of the Tiber River, is therefore reviewed in a context of mythological topics taken from Homeric tradition. This sacral utterance is spoken in accordance to certain stylistic and ritual patterns that were in use in Roman poetry.

The ceremonies in honour of the dead – Parentalia, Lemuria, Larentalia, Compitalia, mundus patet – corresponded with the spiritual needs of the Romans. The purpose of the religious event recorded in the fasti usually resulted from its placing at a specific moment of the religious year, which was of great significance to the sacral community. A religious intuition in the Romans gave ground to the combination of official ceremonies in the honour of ancestors with important agricultural dates i.e. defined periods for the evaluation of time and space, which, often, accepted the form of apotropaic festivities with magical rituals. Often, the ceremonies of the turn of the year guaranteed human and animal fecundity as well as vegetative fertility.

At the main entrance to the Adam Mickiewicz Park in Poznań, there are two identical stone vases with ancient motives. The author indicates that they are not merely neoclassical works from the beginning of the 20th century, but copies of the famous Townley Vase dating back to the Roman times. Then, he focuses on the retinue of Dionysus on the main frieze of the vase and discusses all ten figures occurring in it.

One of the dramatic ekphrasis forms is the ekphrasis of stage design. It describes what is usually made visible, at least partially, to the public, drawing its attention to important elements of scenography that played a significant role in the performance. Therefore it was necessary to make the spectators aware of those elements. They were used by all three tragedians: Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. The article focuses on selected ekphrases of scenography taken from three Euripidean tragedies: Iphigenia in Tauris, Ion, Alcestis, and on their role in the structure of drama.

Ekphrasis is one of the forms that the Greek tragic dramatists used in their plays. From a dramaturgical point of view it was a very important element of play strictly connected with the conventions of the ancient theater. The examples taken from the Euripidean tragedy will be used to demonstrate the ways the ancient Greek tragedians applied ekphrasis in their works. Their review will start with descriptions, which can be conventionally called the ekphrasis of the theatrical “mask”. The term mask is understood here not sensu stricto as a part of actor’s costume, but as having a reference to what it hides. This type of ekphrasis may be found in visually inaccessible to the public of the Greek theater face of dramatis personae that is hidden behind the mask. It concealed facial expressions, so important to understand the action of the drama itself, as well as the role played by the actor. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of this dramaturgical element as a non-verbal means of communication which harmonizes with the text of play and its action and is crucial to perceive the intended meaning of the actors’ words.

The subject of reflection in this article are antique topoi, whose transmission and reception can be observed in contemporary Italian drama. This topic is discussed on the example of RaffaeleViviani’s play entitled Pescatori (Fishermen), in which you can distinguish the presence of two topoi: a young man and an old man. Moreover, the aim of the article is to look at these topoi in the context of the world of the value of ancient culture, the echo of which also seems to resonate in the song. Taking into account, however, that the issue of connections between the dramaturgy of the Neapolitan writer and the specific elements of the Greek tragedy is an extremely broad problem, this study is merely a delineation of this subject and an indication for further directions of research.

Study on the concept of mneme – “memory” in the plays of Euripides is a continuation of our research (based on the works of Greek tragedians), whose aim is not only to establish meanings, especially new ones, but also to define the role that this concept plays in the works of Euripides. Linguistic and literary analysis of 8 instances of a noun mneme shows that this concept reveals hitherto unknown semantic values and it also performs functions that are important for the plot. Among the meanings of mneme there are five new ones: (1) “testimony, proof” (Suppliant Women), whose role is a ‘media’ message to guarantee the preservation of memory about Theseus’ feats among descendants, (2) “account, balance” (Heracles), rational argument, which the hero must use in a critical situation caused by divine power, (3) specific “history”, which creates the plot (Ion), (4) “reason, rightness” (Iphigenia at Aulis), i.e. evidence of predominance of the woman over the man (in terms of character), (5) “image”, twice in this sense (Iphigenia at Aulis): 1. as a panorama, vivid memory of panegyric and cognitive nature (Greek expedition), 2. as scenes from Iphigenia’s childhood cited in order to change the decision of Agamemnon. In addition to the new ones, Euripides also uses known meanings: mneme with negation, i.e. the lack of “mentions, memories” (= concealment) becomes an important element of the plot of Helen, guaranteeing its happy ending; in turn mneme as Kreon’s “thought” is a tool for mastering feelings and influencing the development of stage events. All meanings defined by Euripides can be divided into two groups. The first group includes meanings that have rational value: (1) “account, balance”, (2) “thought”, (3) “reason, rightness”. In the other group there are expressive meanings: (1) “testimony, proof”, (2) “mention, memory”, (3) “history”, (4) “image”. Undoubtedly, Euripides not only broadened the semantic scope of the concept of mneme, introducing its new values, but creatively used them in his plays, whether to describe the main characters, or as an element influencing the action, or finally as a testimony of the past that is important for the plot.

The aim of the study, which is a continuation of this type of research (based on Greek literary sources of the Presocratic era), is to determine the meanings of the concept of mneme – “memory” in the works of Aeschylus and Sophocles, as well as to determine the function it plays in a given place. Linguistic and literary analysis of 12 instances of a noun mneme in Aeschylus (3) and Sophocles (9) shows that this concept reveals hitherto unknown semantic shades. Aeschylus gives mneme a new meaning of “worship” (in Suppliants). He also uses the already known: intellectual “power of memory” and for the first time in the history of Greek literature identifies “memory” with the mother of all muses – Mnemosyne (in Prometheus Bound). More often mneme appears in the works of Sophocles, which results from the functions performed there. After all, the intellectual “power of memory” and “memories” as the effects of its actions allow the characters to: (1) do well (and thus keep the moral order), (2) get to know the truth about ourselves (to recognize our own identity) changing the course of dramatic action as part of the peripeteia (the case of Oedipus), (3) lead (as the driving force) to destruction of heroes (Jocasta, Oedipus), (4) drive the action (as “thought”), (5) serve as a moral compass (in a new semantic shade “attention”, in Oedipus at Colonuss), (6) store a resource (memories) as a deposit in collective memory as a warning for posterity. And finally, for the first time in history, the concept of mneme as a tool of mimesis is used in Oedipus Rex in the new sense: “the ability to (re)create” (inspired by Mnemosyne) or otherwise: “poetic art of reconstruction” of dramatic events. Defined meanings (semantic shades) of mneme can be divided into 2 groups. The first group includes those that take rational value: “power / ability to remember”, “thought”, “attention”), while the other holds the expressive meanings: “worship, honour, commemoration”, “(re)creative, poetic reconstruction”. It seems that the Greek tragedians were aware of the role that mneme can play in their works: whether in the depiction of the characters, or as an element that drives the action, or in recalling, in various ways, the past and its cultivation.

Apotropaic behaviours in the Roman system of beliefs required the use of various forms of offerings in order to achieve the expected sacral goal. We may assume, that a full effectiveness of such actions was asserted only by human sacrifice. Along with the development of religious practices the Romans substituted human sacrifice however, in times of serious danger for the Roman community, they would reach for the early sacral experiences. In the system of Roman beliefs extremely important appeared to be the rituals at the turn of the year, which represented the periodic change of the tempus sacrum. Many of the rituals of the turn of the year played the role of lustrative rites, which were extended into practices of liberating the community from sacral miasma and received those rites which represented the destruction of cosmic order and its recovery to the state of primordial chaos. These types of ceremonies might have required a human sacrifice.

W literaturze starożytnej obecne są dwa, biegunowo odmienne, motywy podania o Cyklopie: epicki, znany z IX ks. Odysei, przywołany później i poddany modyfikacji przez Eurypidesa w dramacie satyrowym Cyklop oraz liryczno-erotyczny spopularyzowany przez Teokryta w XI sielance, Skargi Cyklopa. Wersję Teokryta rozbudował Owidiusz w XIII ks. Metamorfoz. Pomostem między obydwoma wariantami mitycznymi jest tzw. dytyramb Filoksenosa z Kytery. Mit Polifema, głównie w postaci, jaką nadał mu Owidiusz, przewija się przez hiszpański wiek XVI aż do początku kolejnego stulecia, znajdując wielu naśladowców i tłumaczy. Pod koniec XVI wieku sięga do niego również Lope de Vega w powieści pasterskiej La Arcadia (1598), nadając mu formę tradycyjnej hiszpańskiej strofy romance. Mit stanowi odbicie historii będącej przedmiotem narracji, wzbogacając powieść o elementy perspektywy autobiograficznej. W Fábula de Polifemo (1612) Luisa de Góngory mit ulega całkowitej transformacji. W jego interpretacji przeważają barokowe kontrasty i hiperbola. Struktura dzieła oparta jest na zbieżności przeciwieństw: potworności Polifema i piękna Galatei. Mit staje się też okazją do transpozycji koncepcji piękna, wywodzącej się od petrarkizmu: obserwować można dominantę planu metaforycznego, zastępującego elementy rzeczywistości.

In this article I would like to show the potential of the destroyed ancient sculptures and therefore to explore a variety of new themes and issues that may be generated through re-using the motives by the artists. I was especially interested in creators, who undertook a multimedial game with traditional sculpture representations, using the potential of performance art, photography, digital image processing and computer photomontage. Mary Duffy by her performative actions showed that the deformed body of the ancient sculpture forms also her everyday reality. The damaged statue of “Venus de Milo” has become a useful inspiration for stories about disability and discrimination. Maciej Osika chose the path of fantasy and aesthetisation of the damages. Graphic processed assemblies allowed him to tell us about the perfection of the human body, while Davide Bedoni decided to show that the sculptures can describe the infinite myth of harmony, which defects will be complemented by the portraits of contemporary icons of beauty. The technique of exploring the audience has been chosen by French artist Diane Ducruet by showing “Passengers” to the viewers. The artist used the facial photographs of her loved ones through which fragments of well known, damaged Louvre sculptures are barely noticeable. Ducruet talks about the elusiveness of life by those damaged portraits. Likewise all the artists mentioned above she also blurs the boundaries between what is real and what is imaginary.
