Opis:
This study presents a linear relationship between the impact sensitivity of nitroaromatic energetic compounds and their electric spark sensitivity. The methodology assumes that the impact sensitivity of a nitroaromatic energetic compound with the general formula CaHbNcOd can be expressed as a function of the electrostatic sensitivity, the number of NH2 group substitutions in the 2,4,6-trinitrophenyl ring and non-additive structural parameters. The root mean square and absolute standard deviation of a newly introduced correlation were respectively found to be 2.4 and 2.0 for 27 nitroaromatic energetic compounds. The proposed new correlation was also tested for 7 additional nitroaromatic energetic compounds, which have complex molecular structures such as 1-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl)-5,7-dinitrobenzotriazole and 1,3,7,9-tetranitrophenoxazine.

Opis:
This study presents a new simple correlation between friction sensitivity of nitramines and their molecular structures. This novel correlation can help chemists and chemical engineers to predict the friction sensitivity of new nitramines without using any experimental data, which is important for safety in industrial processes. The new correlation can also help to elucidate the mechanism of initiation of energetic materials by frictional stimuli. This new method assumes that friction sensitivity of a nitramine of general formula CaHbNcOd can be expressed as a function of the optimized elemental composition and the contributions of specific molecular structural parameters. The new correlation has root mean square and average deviations of 7.64 and 6.44 J, respectively, for 20 nitramines with different molecular structures. The proposed new method was also tested for 11 nitramines containing complex molecular structures.

Opis:
cis-1,3,4,6-Tetranitrooctahydroimidazo-[4,5 d]imidazole (BCHMX) is a new bicyclic nitramine which has been prepared using a two-stage synthetic method. In this work, a new melt cast composition based on BCHMX/TNT (60/40 by wt.) was prepared. For comparison purposes, Composition B based on RDX (1,3,5-trinitro1,3,5-triazacyclohexane)/TNT (60/40 by wt.), and HMX (1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7tetraazacyclooctane)/TNT (60/40 by wt.) were also studied. Impact and friction sensitivities of these compositions and of the individual explosives were determined. The detonation velocities were measured experimentally. The performance of the compositions prepared was studied by measuring the brisance using the Kast method. The detonation parameters of the compositions and the individual explosives were calculated using the EXPLO5 thermodynamic code. The results show that mixing these nitramines with TNT decreases their sensitivities. BCHMX/TNT is more sensitive to impact and friction than Composition B while it has higher detonation parameters, at the same level as HMX/TNT. In comparison, BCHMX/TNT has the highest relative brisance of the compositions studied. It is postulated that the higher performance characteristics of BCHMX and compositions based on it, in comparison with those of HMX, are due to a higher positive heat of formation for this nitramine.

Opis:
A mechanical approach had been adopted for fabricating HMX nanoparticles. This fabrication method avoided the recrystallization process and was different from the traditional methods employed to prepare nanoexplosives. In particular, the high yield and low cost increased the possibility of its industrial application. Specifcally, HMX particles, that had a mean size of 0.27 μm, were prepared by mechanical milling; a signifcant proportion of nano-HMX (<100 nm) were present and these were observed by TEM and SEM images. The thermal decomposition of HMX samples before and after pulverization was investigated by TG/DSC analysis. The results indicated that there was no obvious difference between the thermographs of raw and pulverized HMX. The HMX samples were investigated by friction, impact, and shock sensitivity tests. High safety was confrmed since pulverized HMX was far more insensitive than raw HMX; indeed the shock sensitivity of pulverized HMX was about 60 percent lower than that of raw HMX.

Recently published data for analogous PBXs with a polyisobutylene binder (i.e. a C4 matrix) are also included. All of these PBXs were tested using the Small Scale Water Gap Test according to STANAG 4490, the results of which are directly proportional to the impact and friction sensitivities of the PBXs studied. Reciprocal ratios between the shock sensitivity of these PBXs and their performance were found using the volume heat of explosion as a variable; a semi-logarithmic analogue, using a representative of the detonation pressure (product ρD2) as a variable, has shown an opposite trend for three of these PBXs. A semi-logarithmic relationship between the shock sensitivity of the PBXs and the impact sensitivity of their pure nitramine fillers has confirmed the higher shock reactivity of the C4 PBXs filled with both technical ε-HNIW and RS-ε-HNIW, while for the HTPB PBXs filled with technical grade ε-HNIW, the shock sensitivity found was as expected. The shape and size of the particles should not be a reason for the increased resistance to shock of HMX-C4.

The sensitivity of explosives to various initiating events, in probability of initiation-level of stimulus space, has a shape of sigmoidal curve. In standard sensitivity tests only one point on this curve is sought, most often the 50% initiation probability level. The usual (and most often used) method for its determination is the up-and-down method. The whole sensitivity curve can be obtained by conducting large number of trials at all levels or more effectively by probit analysis. The usage of probit analysis, improvement of the precision of the results and comparison with the results precision of the up-and-down method is demonstrated by the example of determination of sensitivity to friction.

Different polymeric matrices, based on butadiene-styrene rubber, polymethyl-methacrylate and silicone binders, were investigated for their ability to decrease the sensitivity of explosives to different mechanical stimuli. A series of plastic explosives based on four different nitramines, namely RDX (1,3,5-trinitro- 1,3,5-triazacyclohexane), β-HMX (β-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazacyclooctane), BCHMX (bicycloHMX, cis-1,3,4,6-tetranitro-octahydroimidazo-[4,5- d ]imidazole) and ε -HNIW (ε -2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane, ε-CL-20), bonded by the selected polymeric matrices were prepared. Sensitivity to impact of all of the plastic explosives prepared as well as of the pure explosives, was measured using the fall hammer test. Sensitivity to friction was determined using the BAM friction test. The performance was studied using the ballistic mortar test and the results were recorded relative to TNT (trinitrotoluene) as reference. By comparing the results of impact and friction sensitivities, it is obvious that the mechanism of transfer of the friction force to the reaction center of the nitramine molecule should be different from that of impact energy transfer. The silicone binder appeared to be the best polymer for decreasing the sensitivity of explosives. The results of the ballistic mortar proved that the performance of the plastic explosives prepared is affected by the type and weight percentage of the binder in each sample.

New purification method was applied to obtain epsilon HNIW (ε-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane, ε-HNIW) which has low impact sensitivity. The method is based on removing the impurities from a solution of alpha HNIW (ε-HNIW) by a chemical reaction to obtain pure epsilon form. For comparison, selected different published methods for recrystallization of HNIW to obtain the epsilon form were studied. All the selected methods are based on solvent-antisolvent technique. The optimum parameters, such as type of solvent and anti-solvent, volume ratio of solvent to anti-solvent, rate of addition, speed of stirring, etc., were applied to enhance the crystal size and shape of ε-HNIW. Checking the polymorphs of the obtained HNIW was done by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The thermal stability of the prepared samples was studied by using differential thermal analysis technique (DTA). Qualitative analysis of the crystal size and shape was done using scanning electron microscope (SEM) devise. Quantitative measurement of the crystals sizes for the studied samples was determined by Laser scattering particle size distribution analyzer. Impact sensitivity was measured by falling hammer test. The results indicate that all the applied methods of recrystallization give ε-HNIW. The impact sensitivity of HNIW decreases by obtaining small particles with regular shape. All the used published methods produce ε-HNIW with higher impact sensitivity than other nitramines. While the obtained crystals from the new method has regular smooth surface, with small particle size and its impact sensitivity is lower than RDX and HMX.

Five novel high-nitrogen content (N>50%) derivatives of tetrazole are introduced in the study reported here. The assessment of various properties of these compounds were performed, which include physicothermal properties (crystal density, condensed phase heat of formation, melting point, enthalpy of fusion and entropy of fusion), detonation performance (velocity and pressure of detonation, detonation temperature and power), sensitivity with respect to external stimuli (impact, shock, friction and electric spark) and combustion performance (specific impulse). The predicted results of these compounds are compared with dihydroxylammonium 5,5’-bistetrazole-1,1’-diolate (TKX-50) and octanitro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX) as a high performance ionic salt and a neutral explosive, respectively. The novel energetic compounds were found to have higher detonation and combustion performance than either TKX-50 or HMX. The new explosives are therefore good candidates to obtain high detonation and combustion performance in plastic bonded explosives (PBXs) and composite solid propellants, respectively.

The BAM-Fallhammer is a mechanical device to test the impact sensitivity of explosives and to determine a sensitiveness level. By its construction it transforms potential energy into kinetic energy of an impacting hammer, then hitting the sample. Ideally the entire potential energy is available at the moment of impact and the supporting base is infinitely rigid. By this study we want to quantify how much a real Fallhammer deviates from the ideal concept, and what the differences between different Fallhammers in different laboratories are. This information has never been collected in a consistent way. The aim of the authors is to develop guidance on the mechanical properties of the Fallhammer, which can be used for different purposes such as internal quality control, validation of the correct functioning of the Fallhammer, preparation of Round-Robin tests and similar. An established and verified mechanical status of a Fallhammer would greatly improve the quality and comparability of results and Round-Robin tests on the impact sensitivity of explosives.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of agglomerated TATB on the mechanical and sensitivity properties of cast polymer-bonded explosives (PBXs). By introducing agglomerated TATB, cast PBXs with a high solids content can be obtained. The mechanical properties of TATB-based cast PBXs were evaluated by tensile and compression tests. The experimental results showed that the addition of the agglomerated TATB clearly enhanced the ductility and fracture toughness, but decreased the strength of the PBXs. However, the strength increased with the decreasing particle size of the agglomerated TATB. When TATB-crystal was replaced by agglomerated TATB in the cast PBXs, a significant drop in the initial modulus and stress were observed. Samples with a higher content of agglomerated TATB were less sensitive to impact stimuli. The desired mechanical and sensitivity characteristics may be achieved for TATB-based cast PBXs by introducing agglomerated TATB.

Submicron- and nano-explosives have attracted growing attention, while the mechanism of how particle size influences the impact sensitivity is not completely understood. In the present work, HMX (octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine) based PBXs (plastic bonded explosives) of three particle size distributions (1-2 and 10-20 μm, and 100-300 nm) and two pressed densities (91%TMD and 79%TMD) were characterized and tested with a range of techniques to determine their mechanical and thermal properties and impact sensitivities. The results demonstrated that with decreased particle size, the mechanical strength as well as the thermal conductivity were dramatically improved, and the impact sensitivity was significant decreased. The structure of impacted samples suggested that the ignition mechanism is dependant on the particle size. Samples with higher density were more sensitive to impact, as the impact force acting on these samples was higher. The correlation between particle size and impact sensitivity is discussed in detail.

Boron and potassium nitrate are the key components for the ignition system of the igniter composition for rocket propellants. Boron-potassium nitrate-ethyl cellulose (B:KNO3:PEC) in proportions of 30:70:10 is a well established igniter composition. The composition delivers a maximum pressure in the range 4.0-4.6 MPa in closed vessel firing at a loading density of 0.01 g/cm3. For the effective ignition of a large booster stage propellant (length more than 4 m), an enhancement in the maximum pressure, without affecting safety, is a prime requirement. The use of guanylurea dinitramide (GUDN) in an igniter composition has not been reported in the literature. Hence, the present study on the effect of GUDN on the combustion behaviour and sensitivity of the B/KNO3 composition (30/70) has been carried out. Several compositions containing different weight percents of GUDN were prepared. Their thermal behaviour was determined by thermal analysis DSC-TGA. Their sensitivities to external stimuli such as impact, friction and spark were evaluated. The results of closed vessel firings indicated that GUDN-based igniter compositions produced higher peak pressures (up to 4.5 MPa to 5.8 MPa), with invariably lower burning times, compared to the control composition. The REAL computer programme indicated an increase in the flame temperature of the composition from 2238 K to 2425 K on addition of GUDN. All of the compositions were insensitive towards friction up to 36 kg, and towards spark up to 5 J energy.

Dioctyl sebacate (DOS) is a plasticizer used with oily material for the softening of polyisobutylene binder (PIB) to form a polymeric matrix. This matrix was used for the preparation of various plastic explosives. The following energetic cyclic nitramines were used as explosive fillers: BCHMX (cis-1,3,4,6- tetranitrooctahydroimidazo [4,5 d]imidazole), ε-HNIW (ε-2,4,6,8,10,12- hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane), RDX (1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5- triazacyclohexane), and HMX (1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazacyclooctane). For comparison, Fluorel binder was used for the preparation of several plastic bonded explosives (PBXs) based on the same selected explosives. Impact and friction sensitivities of the prepared samples and the pure explosive fillers were measured. The thermal stability was studied using differential thermal analysis (DTA). High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to detect the presence of BCHMX dissolved in dioctyl sebacate (DOS). The heat of combustion of the prepared samples and of the pure explosive fillers was measured using a bomb calorimetry. The results show that PIB softened by plasticizer (DOS) has a greater positive effect on decreasing the impact sensitivity of the studied pure explosives than Fluorel binder. On the other hand, the plasticizer acts as a solvent for the energetic materials and decreases the decomposition temperature of these plastic explosives.
