Opis:
Anisotropic rotor configurations influenced by the presence of a large number of geometrical parameters in a permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance (PMASR) motor pose design challenges in obtaining a robust geometry satisfying the requirements of reduced torque ripple and high torque density. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to perform detailed geometrical sensitivity analysis of a 36 slot/4 pole permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance (PMASR) motor using h-indexing and level sensitivity analysis in order to specify a guideline for designers to prioritize the design variables for optimization. Systematic multi-level design optimization for multiple objectives is implemented by an NSGA-II algorithm aided by the finite element analysis tool, hardware prototyping and experimental validation. The optimized designs also exhibit better structural and thermal characteristics.

Opis:
An ancient forging device in Spain has been studied, namely the forge with a waterwheel and air-blowing tube or hydraulic trompe, found near the village of Santa Eulalia de Oscos (province of Asturias, Spain). Three procedures using ad hoc methods were applied: 3D modelling, finite element analysis (FEA), and computational-fluid dynamics (CFD). The CFD results indicated the proper functioning of the trompe, which is a peculiar device based on the Venturi effect to take in air. The maximum air volume flow rate supplied to the forge by the trompe was shown to be 0.091 m3/s, and certain parameters of relevance in the trompe design presented optimal values, i.e. offering maximum air-flow supply. Furthermore, the distribution of stress over the motion-transmission system revealed that the stress was concentrated most intensely in the cogs of the transmission shaft (a kind of camshaft), registering values of up to 7.50 MPa, although this value remained below half of the maximum admissible work stress. Therefore, it was confirmed that the oak wood from which the motion system and the trompe were made functioned properly, as these systems never exceeded the maximum admissible working stress, demonstrating the effectiveness of the materials used in that period.

Opis:
Few aspects of shunting effect have been studied so far. Shunting effect in resistance spot welding (RSW) occurs when the electrical current passes through the previous spot welds. Value of this current depends mostly on distance, number, and size of previous spot welds. This will cause some dimensional and metallurgical changes in welding nugget as well as heat affected zone (HAZ). In this study, shunting effect of RSW is considered by finite element method (FEM) and the results are compared to experiments performed on aluminum alloy 2219. Weld spacing together with welding current and time are considered to discover the effect of shunting current in the final quality of nugget. A three factor experiment design has been performed to find the significance of factors and interactive effects, as well as finite element model verification. Electrothermal and mechanical interactions are considered in the FEM. Experimental and numerical solutions have yielded similar results in terms of welding nugget properties. Asymmetry in electrical potential, temperature, stress distribution and geometry of shunted nugget is predicted and verified directly or indirectly. Intense effect of shunting current on nugget height, asymmetric growth of heat affected zone (HAZ) toward previous welding nugget, as well as concentration of alloying elements along grain boundaries are also discovered.

Opis:
In this paper, a new type of interior composite-rotor bearingless permanent magnet synchronous motors (BPMSMs) with two layer permanent magnets (PMs) is proposed. In order to reduce the torque ripple of this kind of motors, the sizes of PMs are optimized. Moreover, the magnetic field analysis of the interior composite-rotor BPMSM with two layer PMs is carried out by the finite element method (FEM). The corresponding static electronic magnetic characteristics at no load, including magnetic field, PM flux linkage and inductance, are studied in detail. In addition, electromagnetic torque characteristics and suspension force characteristics are also investigated thoroughly. The results of the analysis and simulation lay a significant foundation for further research on the interior composite-rotor BPMSMs with two layer PMs.

Opis:
This paper is focusing on 3D Finite Elements Analysis (FEA) based modelling of protrusions as defects or imperfections in the XLPE high voltage cable. This study is aiming to examine the impact protrusions have on the initiation of partial discharges. Spherical and ellipsoidal protrusions with different sizes at the conductor screen of the high voltage cable is an essential content of this paper. In addition, a spherical gas-filled void is placed inside and outside the protrusions, and a water tree produced from protrusions is under consideration. The partial discharge influence taking place at the protrusions and the stress enhancement factor is determined for all the variations mentioned to quantify the rise in the inception of partial discharges due to the protrusions.

Opis:
Progress made in recent years has brought about a high demand for increasingly modern structural and technological solutions. Each structure should in turn be designed and built to show sufficient durability for the intended period of use. The requirement of durability is met if, throughout its intended lifetime, the structure fulfils its roles regarding load-bearing capacity, serviceability limits and stability without excessive, unexpected costs. Due to the above, a need arises to predict the response of an engineering structure to given loads throughout its life. Thus it becomes increasingly common to employ numerical analyses using the finite elements method (FEM), both on the design stage and later, for the purposes of evaluating the state of a specific structure. However, a numerical calculation model may be constructed in different ways. This paper presents the impact of geometry of the model, the choice of a discretization mesh and the choice of a continuous 3D or 2D model corresponding to pavement-subgrade system calculation model. 3-dimensional modelling was carried out in this paper as full modelling of actual engineering problems in 3-dimensional space, and in the form of simplified modelling using axial symmetry. In the model, a traditional multi-layer pavement structure was considered. Criterion values obtained in numerical analyses were compared to values obtained with the use of VEROAD software.

Opis:
We focus on two and three-dimensional isogeometric finite element method computations with tensor product Ck B-spline basis functions. We consider the computational cost of the multi-frontal direct solver algorithm executed over such tensor product grids. We present an algorithm for estimation of the number of floating-point operations per mesh node resulting from the execution of the multi-frontal solver algorithm with the ordering obtained from the element partition trees. Next, we propose an algorithm that introduces C0 separators between patches of elements of a given size based on the stimated number of flops per node. We show that the computational cost of the multi-frontal solver algorithm executed over the computational grids with C0 separators introduced is around one or two orders of magnitude lower, while the approximability of the functional space is improved. We show O(NlogN) computational complexity of the heuristic algorithm proposing the introduction of the C0 separators between the patches of elements, reducing the computational cost of the multi-frontal solver algorithm.
