Opis:
This paper presents experimental and numerical studies on influence of an incidence angle of the shock wave on a steel plate. The problem of interaction between the wave front and a barrier is important from the point of view of protection the crew of armored vehicles. One way of remedying the harmful effects of impacts of the shock wave is the reflection wave of the barrier set at an angle to the face of the wave. The article presents the numerical and experimental approach to the subject. The numerical part presents four models in which the plate was set at angles 0◦, 15◦, 30◦, 45◦. In each case, the plate was loaded by a wave formed after the explosion 2 kg of TNT. In the experimental part the results are presented from an experiment in which the wave was formed from 2 kg TNT detonation at a distance of 0.4 m in parallel to the steel plate.

Opis:
The paper considers the failure study of concrete structures loaded by the pressure wave due to detonation of an explosive material. In the paper two numerical methods are used and their efficiency and accuracy are compared. There are the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and the Finite Element Method (FEM). The numerical examples take into account the dynamic behaviour of concrete slab or a structure composed of two concrete slabs subjected to the blast impact coming from one side. The influence of reinforcement in the slab (1, 2 or 3 layers) is also presented and compared with a pure concrete one. The influence of mesh density for FEM and the influence of important parameters in SPH like a smoothing length or a particle distance on the quality of the results are discussed in the paper.

Opis:
The paper presents numerical analyses aimed at preliminary assessment of the protective panel effectiveness, which task is to protect the elements of building structures against explosion. For the criterion of assessing the effectiveness of the panel the load capacity of the column made of steel I-beam was chosen. Ultimate force was determined by using advanced computational procedure, which consisted of four stages: preload, blast simulation, dynamic response and static analysis of deformed structure. Blast load was simulated using Lagrangian- Eulerian domain coupling. Results indicated that the application of the protective panel significantly reduces the plastic deformation of the structure.

PSI BLAST tool
sequence alignment
seeding technique
Opis:
In this paper we present two algorithms that may serve as efficient alternatives to the well-known PSI BLAST tool: SeedBLAST and CTX-PSI Blast. Both may benefit from the knowledge about amino acid composition specific to a given protein family: SeedBLAST uses the advisedly designed seed, while CTX-PSI BLAST extends PSI BLAST with the context-specific substitution model. The seeding technique became central in the theory of sequence alignment. There are several efficient tools applying seeds to DNA homology search, but not to protein homology search. In this paper we fill this gap. We advocate the use of multiple subset seeds derived from a hierarchical tree of amino acid residues. Our method computes, by an evolutionary algorithm, seeds that are specifically designed for a given protein family. The seeds are represented by deterministic finite automata (DFAs) and built into the NCBI-BLAST software. This extended tool, named SeedBLAST, is compared to the original BLAST and PSI-BLAST on several protein families. Our results demonstrate a superiority of SeedBLAST in terms of efficiency, especially in the case of twilight zone hits. The contextual substitution model has been proven to increase sensitivity of protein alignment. In this paper we perform a next step in the contextual alignment program. We announce a contextual version of the PSI-BLAST algorithm, an iterative version of the NCBI-BLAST tool. The experimental evaluation has been performed demonstrating a significantly higher sensitivity compared to the ordinary PSI-BLAST algorithm.

Opis:
In the paper a chosen model of the light armoured vehicle was tested in terms of blast loading. More precisely, the blast propagation and interaction with the tire behaviour and suspension system elements of the light-armoured vehicle (LAV) was simulated. The chosen military vehicle meets the requirements of levels 2A and 2B of STANAG 4569 standard. Based on the obtained results, two modifications were proposed for the strength and resistance improvement of the wheel. The first consisted of inserting the rubber runflat ring inside the tire, whereas in the second the honeycomb-like composite wheel was implemented. Non-linear dynamic simulations were carried out using the explicit LS-Dyna code, with multi-material Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation for simulation the blast process.

Opis:
Blast mitigation continues to be a popular field of research when military vehicles are concerned. The main problem is coping with the vehicle global motion consequences following an explosion. The paper presents a potential application of the linear vacuum packed particle (VPP) damper as a supplementation for a viscous shock absorber in a traditional blast mitigation seat design. The paper also presents field test results for the underbelly blast explosion, comparing them to the laboratory tests carried out on the impact bench. To collect accelerations, the anthropomorphic test device, i.e. the Hybrid III dummy, was used. A set of numerical simulations of the modified blast mitigation seat with the additional VPP linear damper were revealed. The VPP damper was modeled according to the Johnson–Cook model of viscoplasticity. The Hertzian contact theory was adopted to model the contact between the vehicle and the ground. The reduction of the dynamic response index (DRI) in the case of the VPP damper application was also proved.

Opis:
This paper deals with the issues pertinent to the design of frost-resistant concretes in exposure class XF3 (high water saturation) when the concretes are made with cements containing ground granulated blast furnace slag (ggbs). The testing programme covered four series of non-air entrained concrete made with cements CEM I, CEM II/A-S, CEM II/B-S and CEM III/A containing 0%, 13%, 28% and 53% ggbs respectively, and two non-air entrained concrete series with the binder made from CEM I and 0 to 55% ggbs. The water-binder (w/b) ratio ranged from 0.25 to 0.55. Frost durability testing was performed using a modified ASTM C666A procedure to determine changes in mass (dm) and beam length (dL). The relationships occurring between the w/b ratio and ggbs content in the binder and the length change (dL) of the specimens were described using curvilinear regression functions, through the analysis of artificial neural networks. Slag-content-dependent critical values of the w/b ratio were determined taking the length change dL = 1.3 mm to be the criterion for the resistance to internal cracking. In the authors’ view, this approach can be a good method for checking equivalent performance of concretes made with cements containing mineral additions.
