Opis:
The reduction in asphalt mixture production and placement temperatures can be achieved by modifying bitumen 35/50 with the Fischer-Tropsch synthetic wax. To identify the role this modifier plays in the bitumen 35/50, a series of tests has been performed. The experiment was carried out for wax doses from 1.5% to 4.0%. Analysis of the modified binder properties such as ductility at 5, 15 and 25◦C, complex modulus G* with the parameter G*/sinx and LSV, susceptibility according to MSCR procedure, morphology and group type analysis helped describe the structuring function of the F-T wax in the binder. The optimum F-T wax content of 2.5% has been identified to provide the desired parameters required for modified binders.

Opis:
This article discusses the issue of viscoplastic deformation that usually occurs in road pavements, especially in the summer season in Poland. The evaluation of viscoplastic deformations was performed on the example of the asphalt concrete designated for the binding course layer (AC16W). Additionally, the bitumen used for manufacturing asphalt concrete samples was modified with two types of synthetic waxes widely applied in the warm mix asphalt technology. These waxes varied in molecular weight, which affected their softening point results. Before decomposition of the total strain into elastic and viscoplastic part, oscillatory tests in the linear viscoelastic region were required. The generalized Maxwell model was used to describe the behavior of asphalt concrete in the linear viscoelastic range. Using the elasto-viscoelastic correspondence principle, described by Schapery, the initial yield strength stress was evaluated. The pseudostrain variable turned out to be useful for estimating the onset of viscoplastic strains occurring in road pavement. Such engineering procedure approach could result in faster approximation of the yield strength level during the design of pavement structures. It will also allow for differentiation of mixtures in terms of their susceptibility to permanent deformation and of their sensitivity to traffic induced overloading.

Opis:
Mineral fines are a waste product of aggregate production in quarries and asphalt mixing plants. The incorporation of mineral gabbro dust into foam bitumen causes developing of a mesh reinforcement in the recycled base mixture. This mesh reinforcement, observed in a recycled base structure, induces an increase in stiffness modulus, where its elastic part of complex modulus dominates over the imaginary part. Therefore, it is possible to create a recycled mixture with a lower susceptibility to loading time/temperature. In result, the presence of gabbro dust in recycled mixture limits the magnitude of strains induced by the traffic load. This paper presents the results of the tests carried out on the mineral dusts derived from gabbro rock. Structural and functional properties of the fines were determined to prepare their characteristics. Then, the cold recycled mixtures for the road base were designed with the 5–20% mineral fines content. The mixtures were prepared in cold recycling technology with foamed bitumen. Further tests involved determining mechanical and physical properties of the recycled mixes, including air voids content, Marshall stability, Marshall quotient (stiffness), indirect tensile strength and stiffness modulus at 20°C). The results indicated a positive influence of the gabbro dusts on the investigated parameters. With the use of ANOVA tests, the significance of the influence of the gabbro dust and foamed bitumen on these properties was evaluated. Harrington’s multicriteria method was employed to establish gabbro dust and foamed bitumen amounts, the addition of which would guarantee optimal properties of the recycled base mixture.

Opis:
Electro-dynamic passive magnetic bearings are now viewed as a feasible option when looking for support for high-speed rotors. Nevertheless, because of the skew-symmetrical visco-elastic properties of such bearings, they are prone to operational instability. In order to avoid this, the paper proposes the addition of external damping into the newly designed vibrating laboratory rotor-shaft system. This may be achieved by means of using simple passive dampers that would be found among the components of the electro-dynamic bearing housings along with magnetic dampers, which satisfy the operational principles of active magnetic bearings. Theoretical investigations are going to be conducted by means of a structural computer model of the rotor-shaft under construction, which will take into consideration its actual dimensions and material properties. The additional damping magnitudes required to stabilize the most sensitive lateral eigenmodes of the object under consideration have been determined by means of the Routh-Hurwitz stability criterion.
