Opis:
The paper presents the results of microstructural and mechanical investigation of long-term aged TP347HFG austenitic stainless steel. Ageing was performed at a time of up to 30 000 hours and the temperature of 600 and 650◦C. Ageing was proved to lead to the precipitation of secondary phase particles not only inside grains but also on the boundaries of grains and twins. The MX precipitates were observed inside the grains. However, M23C6 carbides and sigma phase precipitates were observed on grain boundaries. The changes in the microstructure of the examined steel translated into the mechanical properties, i.e. initially observed growth and then the decrease of yield strength and a gradual decrease in impact energy. The overageing process – a decrease in strength properties – was associated with the growth of the size of M23C6 carbides and the precipitation of the sigma phase. The reduction of impact energy in TP347HFG austenitic stainless steel was found to be associated with the precipitation of M23C6 carbides in the case of the 600◦C temperature, and the M23C6 carbides and sigma phase in the case of the 650◦C temperature. The rate of changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties depended on the ageing temperature.

Opis:
The AlMg10 aluminum alloy reinforced with SiC particles was subjected to friction stir processing (FSP). The composite was made by mechanical mixing and gravity casting. The mass fraction of SiC particles in the composite was about 10%. Evaluation of the effects of FSP treatment was performed by means of light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, EDS and hardness measurement. It was found that the inhomogeneous distribution of SiC particles and their agglomeration, which were observable in the cast composite, were completely eliminated after FSP modification. The treatment was also accompanied by homogenisation of the material in the mixing zone as well as fragmentation of both the matrix grain of the composite and SiC particles. In the case of SiC particles, a change in their shape was also observed. In the as-cast composite, particles with dimensions from 30 to 60 μm and a sharp-edged polyhedral shape prevailed, while in the material subjected to friction treatment, particles with dimensions from 20 to 40 μm and a more equiangular shape prevailed. Pores and other material discontinuities occurring frequently in the as-cast composite were completely eliminated after friction modification. The recorded changes in the microstructure of the material were accompanied by an increase in the hardness of the composite by nearly 35%. The conducted investigations have shown that FSP modification of the AlMg10/SiC composite made by the casting method leads to favorable microstructural changes in the surface layer and may be an alternative solution to other methods and technologies used in surface engineering.

Opis:
This paper describes a study of explosively welded, commercially pure titanium-stainless steel 316L plates. Following welding, the plates were heat-treated at the temperature of 600°C for 90 minutes. Examinations of the bond structure were carried out before and after heat treatment to investigate the processes taking place during explosive welding of materials. Observations were performed using light, scanning electron (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The mechanical properties were examined applying three-point bending tests with cyclic loads. Fractographic examination and hardness measurements were also performed. It has been found that the bonding zones are characterized by a specific microstructure, chemical composition and microhardness. The heat treatment used in the study increases the relative volume of brittle intermetallic phases, causing a reduction in fatigue strength of the joint.

Since 1991, the Foundation for Cardiac Surgery Development in Zabrze has been implementing research on the artificial heart. In 1995, an artificial ventricle, POLVAD, was implanted to a patient, and in 1998, the prototype of a clinical controller, POLPDU-401, was created. A further development of the studies on an implantable artificial heart requires an integrated approach and an application of advanced methods of materials sciences in order to develop new materials suitable for the contact with blood, as well as to apply a multilateral biomedical diagnostics in hydrodynamic conditions. The estimation of the cell–material interaction plays an important role in the biomaterial design. An analysis of the influence of the carbon content in titanium nitride on the biological and biophysical properties of biomaterial coatings was studied. The cell-material reactions were considered in dynamic and static conditions. Three groups of materials were under examinations – titanium nitride (TiN), as well as titanium carbonitride with a low and high carbon content – of which the best properties were observed for TiN. We found a strong influence of the stoichiometry of TiN (atomic ratio of Ti/N) on the biocompatibility. A non-stoichiometric TiN could have a negative influence on the surrounding tissue.

Opis:
The use of carbon fiber composites (CFC) for different applications is widespread. Carbon-based materials show, however, significant oxidative degradation in air. Modern materials are subjected to aggressive, corrosive environment. This type of environment may strongly reduce their mechanical properties. For the protection of CFC, it was necessary to apply coatings to the composite surface. In the presented paper, a chromium/chromium nitride (Cr/Cr2N) multilayer structure has been selected as the inner part. The outer part of the coating was a hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H), gradually implanted by Cr nanocrystals. The application of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated that the proposed deposition method allowed the formation of a Cr/Cr2N multilayer of Λ = 150 nm, topped with a-C:H+ Cr23C6 composite of a varied carbides density. The micro-hardness of the deposited coatings was up to 14 GPa (at a load of 2 and 5 mN). The microstructure of the deposited coatings was described in detail by means of TEM in the authors’ recently published paper [1]. This paper is a continuation thereof, aimed at describing microstructure changes after a localized corrosion process. In order to study localized corrosion in coatings, particularly in metallic (Cr) interlayers, the potential measurements and voltammetry experiments were performed in a Ringer solution. The open-circuit potential reaches stable values after a sufficient time period. The results indicated that the presence of a-C:H+Cr23C6, the outer part of the coating, speeds up the localized corrosion process in Cr interlayers in the inner part of a coating.

Opis:
The paper deals with information concerning properties and technology of a new generation cementitious composite i.e. Ultra-High Performance Concrete. High performance here means both high strength and high durability under the influence of environmental factors. This group of composites is mainly represented by Reactive Powder Concretes (RPC), which show both outstanding durability and mechanical properties. Characteristic features of RPC are mainly due to the very low water-cement ratio, which involves application of superplasticizer, significant reduction of aggregate grains size as well as hydrothermal treatment. In the first part of the paper selected properties of RPC are compared to ordinary concrete and to other groups of new generation concrete. Moreover, fundamental technological factors influencing properties of RPC are described as well. The second part deals with the RPC developed at Cracow University of Technology. The presented test results are mainly focused on the influence of steel fibres content on mechanical properties of reactive powder concrete and hydrothermal treatment on composites microstructure. The quantitative and qualitative evaluation of this relationship expand the knowledge of the UHPC technology. Finally, the third part presents the most significant and newest structures which have been erected with the use of RPC.

Opis:
Cermet coatings provide protection against aggressive operating environment of machine and device elements, such as corrosion, wear or high-temperature conditions. Currently WC-based cermet coatings are frequently used in the different industry branches. In this work, conventional WC-based powders (WC-Co and WC-Co-Cr) were sprayed with High Velocity Oxy Fuel (HVOF) onto AZ31 magnesium alloy with different spray distances (320 and 400 mm). The aim of the research was to investigate the effect of the spray distance on the microstructure of the coatings, phase composition and electrochemical corrosion resistance. Results revealed that higher spray distance results in greater porosity, 1.9% and 2.3% for 320 mm and 2.8% and 3.1% for 400 mm in case of WC-Co and WC-Co-Cr coatings, respectively. Also the influence has been observed for coatings microhardness, c.a. 1300 HV0.3 for shorter spray distance, whereas for longer one it was less than 1100 HV0.3. The corrosion resistance estimated in potentiodynamic polarization measurements was the best for WC-Co-Cr coating deposited from the shorter spray distance, corrosion current density was equal to 2.9 µA·cm-2 and polarization resistance was equal to 8424 Ω∙cm2.

Opis:
The effect of phase transformations induced in the surface layer of alumina ceramics during its direct joining with copper activated with oxygen or titanium on the mechanical strength of the ceramic/copper joints was examined. The materials used in the experiments were an alumina single crystal, alumina ceramics (97.5 wt% Al2O3), the cermet mixtures: Cu-Cu2O with 10-50 wt% of Cu2O, copper with 5 wt% of Ti, and copper with 5 wt% of Ti and 10 wt% of Ag. The microstructure of the transition layer was examined by the X-ray diffraction method (XRD), scanning electron microscopy method (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The mechanical strength of the joints was measured using the three-point bending method. The amount of oxygen optimal for the joining process was determined. It has been demonstrated that the cohesion of the joints depends not only on the formation of the individual phases but also, or even primarily, on the microstructure of the transition layer formed between them.

Opis:
Complex microstructure analysis of TiN/Ti/a-C:H multilayer coatings, subjected to mechanical and biological tests, were performed by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM), respectively. Influence of interface numbers and phase ratios on coating properties was studied. Thin films were fabricated by a hybrid PLD technique (PLD supported by magnetron sputtering). The a-C:H phase was characterized by an amorphous structure, while TiN was built of columnar crystallites. Multilayer coatings contained sequentially deposited TiN and a-C:H layers with thin metallic Ti inter- layers deposited at each interface. Mechanisms of mechanical wear of analyzed systems were presented focusing on the cracking propagation revealed in the scratch test. Biological tests were done basing on smooth muscle cells adhesion to coating surfaces. An increase of TiN phase in the coating led to improvement of mechanical properties, while the carbon phase improved the biological behavior. Coatings comprising a higher rate of the carbon (a-C:H) revealed brittleness and were prone to delaminating. Optimal properties from the mechanical and biological point of view were stated for 8xTiN/Ti/a-C:H coating with 1:1 phase ratio (TiN to a-C:H).

This paper intends to describe the formation of cold sprayed coatings and their properties based on latest works. Thermodynamic aspects of the cold spray process are discussed, including the main factors influencing powder particles velocity, e.g. nozzle construction, gas type, powder morphology as well as its significance for coating quality. The phenomenon of coating building is illustrated using both numerical simulation and microstructure analysis. Particular emphasis is placed on the description of critical and erosion velocities. Microstructure and coating properties have also been discussed, i.e. porosity, electrical conductivity and residual stresses based on own research. These are further supplemented by a literature review. Finally, clear division between the low and high pressure cold spray method is made.

Friction Stir Processing (FSP) is a novel solid state processing technique which can be used for microstructural modification of surface layers in metallic materials. This paper analyzes the effects of FSP process parameters on spindle torque acting on the tool and on the tool temperature. It has been shown that an increase in the rotational speed brings about a decrease in the torque and an increase of temperature. For temperature estimation in the stir zone a numerical model was applied, while for predicting a relationship between the spindle torque acting on the tool, rotational and travelling speeds and the down force, the artificial neural networks approach was employed. Light and electron (scanning and transmission) microscopy investigation showed that the FSP process reduces porosity and produces a more uniform distribution of second-phase particles.

The effect of the tool rotational and welding speeds such properties was studied. The mechanical properties of the joints were evaluated by means of micro-hardness (HV) and tensile tests at room temperature. The tensile properties of the friction stir welded tensile specimens depend significantly on both the tool rotational and welding speeds. The microstructural evolution of the weld zone was analysed by optical observations of the weld zones.

FSW welds were carried out on a milling machine. The performance of FSW and Fusion welded joints were identified using tensile test, hardness test and microstructure. The properties of FSW and fusion welded processes were also compared with each other to understand the advantages and disadvantages of these processes for welding applications for Al alloys. It was seen that the tensile strength obtained with FSW was higher as compared to conventional fusion welding process. The width of the heat affected zone of FSW was narrower than Fusion welded joints. The results showed that FSW improved the mechanical properties of welded joints.
