    It does not often happen in the history of urban development that conditions in which towns are functioning are radically changed. Uniejów on the river Warta, with a population of a little above 3000, is one of such urban centres – its development path is now taking a new turn due to intensive development of tourism and recreation functions. The changes that are taking place in Uniejów are primarily affecting its residents. To find out their opinions on the new situation a survey has been conducted on a random sample of the inhabitants of the city and its region. The responses received show that generally the perception of the changes is positive – 100% of the respondents appreciate the improved appearance of the city and 76% point to increased economic growth. On the other hand, there are opinions indicating limited participation of the inhabitants in the success of the city – there are persons who feel to be affected negatively or not at all. This may be due to the fact that Uniejów has only very recently started the new development trajectory and it is too early for all the residents to feel its impact.

    Artykuł przedstawia przegląd popularności Uniejowa na tle małych miast województwa łódzkiego oraz uzdrowisk o podobnym kierunku leczniczym. Zjawisko to mierzono liczbą wyszukiwań w wyszukiwarce internetowej Google. Poza wspomnianym wyżej przeglądem poddano analizie sezonowe zmiany odnajdywania Uniejowa w Internecie i zestawiono je z działaniami promocyjnymi prowadzonymi przez Urząd Miasta. Wyniki wskazują, iż Uniejów jest najbardziej znaną jednostką w gronie małych miast regionu łódzkiego oraz znaczącą, jak na długość funkcjonowania uzdrowiska i jego potencjał, miejscowością uzdrowiskową.
    The article examines the popularity of Uniejów and other small towns and spa resorts with a similar profile within the boundaries of the voivodeship of Łódź. The popularity was measured by the number of searches for each of these towns via the Google search engine. In addition, an analysis was made of season-connected changes in looking up Uniejów on the Internet, and the results were compared with promotional actions implemented by the Municipal Office. The findings indicate that Uniejów is the best known settlement in the group of small towns of Łódź region and, considering its potential and length of functioning, a major spa resort.

    Opis:
    Temperature of groundwater was its earliest recognized healing property and indication for using it for therapeutic bath and other treatments. Later on the chemical composition of water was found to have influence on human body by intensifying the thermal impact of water. The chemical composition may also reduce the suitability of water for general use. Geothermal waters were used in Poland for therapeutic bath until the end of the 20th century, mainly in Cieplice, Lądek-Zdrój, Ciechocinek i Ustroń Śląski. As a result of geological research carried out during the last 20 years, geothermal waters having temperature > 90°C were found in several places, mainly in Polish Lowlands (also in the vicinity of Łódź). Fairly large resources of these waters and their diversity in terms of chemical composition create possibilities of their exploitation for many purposes, especially if water intakes are placed near large cities or in areas attractive for tourists. Uniejów – the youngest thermal spa in Poland and the only such health resort in Łódź voivodship – is an example of using thermal water for balneotherapeutic purposes.

    Uniejów stoi w obliczu ważnych przemian. Realizacja nowoczesnej infrastruktury uzdrowiskowo-rekreacyjnej i uzyskanie statusu uzdrowiska niosą ze sobą ogromne możliwości rozwojowe. Faktyczny rozwój dotyczy jednak tylko nowych terenów. Tymczasem, jak wykazują badania, układy przestrzenne o podwójnej, miejsko-zdrojowej tożsamości doskonale się dopełniają, gdy miasto obsługuje ruch turystyczny, a zespół zdrojowy pełni funkcje uzdrowiskowe. Warunkiem koniecznym dla zaistnienia takiej relacji jest atrakcyjność turystyczna obszarów miejskich, która wyraża się m.in. obecnością wyraźnego genius loci, harmonijną, zwartą zabudową z cechami unikatowości oraz atrakcyjnością przestrzeni publicznych. Autorka artykułu koncentruje się na ocenie atrakcyjności przestrzennej (morfologicznej) Uniejowa pod kątem jego przydatności dla potrzeb turystyki. Badania obejmują: analizę rozwoju przestrzennego, analizę in situ, analizę struktury zabudowy oraz ocenę atrakcyjności przestrzeni publicznych, zrealizowaną w postaci „krzywej wrażeń” (badanie objęło główne przestrzenie publiczne miasta, łączące zespół miejski z zespołem termalnym). Efektem prac jest próba wskazania komponentów atrakcyjności zespołu miejskiego Uniejowa oraz głównych przeszkód w jego aktywizacji turystycznej.
    Uniejów is changing. Implementation of modern spa facilities and acquiring the status the health resort carry a great potential for development, but at present it only applies to new areas of the spa. However, as studies show, the double spatial layouts (town - spa), perfectly complement each other when the health resort area support the spa movement but the town support the tourism movement. A necessary condition for the existence of such a relationship is tourist attractiveness of urban areas, which is expressed by the: presence of explicit genius loci, the harmonious, compact buildings with features of uniqueness and quality of public spaces. The article focuses on the evaluation of spatial (morphological) attractiveness of Uniejów, in terms of its usefulness for the needs of tourism. The study includes an analysis of spatial development, in situ analysis, analysis of the buildings structure and the evaluation of the public spaces, realized as the “experience curve” (the study covered the main public spaces, that link the urban complex with the thermal area). The effect is an attempt to identify the main components of the attractiveness of the Uniejów urban complex and the main obstacles of tourist elicitation.

    W artykule dokonano analizy statystycznej serii pomiarowej dobowych opadów atmosferycznych z lat 1980–2015, zarejestrowanych na stacji IMGW PIB w Uniejowie. Dla tej lokalizacji opracowano charakterystykę warunków opadowych w ujęciu wieloletnim, rocznym, sezonowym oraz miesięcznym. Opady atmosferyczne stanowią jeden z najbardziej zmiennych elementów pogody, nie tylko pod względem ilości (wysokości), ale również terminów ich występowania i czasu trwania, co wykazały przeprowadzone badania. Jednak głównym celem autorów było zwrócenie uwagi na zasadność prowadzenia systematycznych pomiarów meteorologicznych na terenie Uniejowa. Posiadanie wiedzy o sezonowej i wieloletniej cykliczności w występowaniu warunków pogodowych, jak również o możliwości pojawiania się znacznych odchyleń od wartości przeciętnych, wydaje się szczególnie wskazane w mieście, którego rozwój gospodarczy jest obecnie silnie uzależniony od napływu turystów ukierunkowanych na rekreację i rozrywkę na terenach otwartych. Ponadto jedynie dobre rozpoznanie specyficznych cech klimatu lokalnego uzdrowiska daje podstawy do jego ochrony przed skutkami narastającej w rejonie Uniejowa antropopresji.
    The article presents statistical analysis of precipitation data for the period 1980–2015 collected at the Uniejów station belonging to the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management of the National Research Institute. The analysis identified rainfall characteristics in the long term and in annual, seasonal and monthly perspective. The conducted research has shown that precipitation is one of the most variable elements of local climate, not only in terms of quantity, but also periods of their occurrence and duration. Having up-to-date knowledge of seasonal and long-term cyclicality of precipitation, as well as the possibility of significant deviations from average values, seems to be particularly important for a city whose current economic development is mainly dependent on the inflow of tourists seeking recreation and open-air entertainment. Furthermore, only a proper identification of the specific characteristics of the local climate of Uniejów provides the necessary basis for its protection against the effects of anthropogenic impact on the environment in this region.

    Sukces nowoczesnych małych miejscowości wypoczynkowych jest pod wieloma względami bezpośrednio związany z ich konkurencyjnością względem innych, podobnych ośrodków. Jednym ze sposobów na poprawę ich konkurencyjności jest tworzenie atrakcyjnego środowiska architektonicznego, którego cechy pozwolą na wyróżnienie się miasta od konkurencyjnych dla niego ośrodków. Identyfikacja owego wyróżniania się może być oparta o zasadę kontrastu. W artykule podjęto próbę zastosowania tej metody w celu określenia potencjalnie atrakcyjnych cech środowiska architektonicznego, jednego z miast partnerskich Uniejowa – kurortu Truskawiec położonego na Ukrainie.
    Successful functioning of modern small resort towns is in all aspects directly connected with their competitiveness as compared to other similar objects. One of the ways to ensure such competitiveness is to create an attractive architectural space with certain characteristics that differentiate the town from its competitors and attract attention by means of contrast. The article assesses the application of the principle of contrast for identification of potentially attractive characteristics of architectural space using Truskavets as an example.

    The development of the spa function in Uniejów has initiated the activation of tourist functions throughout the region. An important role in spa tourism can play mounds, castles and palaces. These are characteristic objects that have sense and meaning. They often also have distinctive architectural features. Moreover, it is easy to adapt these buildings to new features. They are often adapted to hotels and spa resorts. These functions supporting spa tourism in the region. This article focuses on the assessment (quantitative and qualitative) of mansions, castles and palaces in the county. The analysis focuses on: placement of objects, evaluation of architectural values, technical condition and distortion. The study complements the identification of significant elements of the intangible heritage that can be perceived as important for the identity of the place (and / or region) and significant for the development of innovative tourism products. The results of the research allowed to assess the overall condition of the cultural resource, which are the mansions, castles and palaces of the region. The individual objects were assessed for their tourist attractiveness and classified in 4 groups: outstanding; significant; moderate and insignificant tourist potential. Finally, recommendations have been developed. They concern the management of objects. Recommendations include the need to preserve the cultural heritage and the economic development of the area
