Opis:
The purpose of the article is to present women’s aspirations for access to academic education in Poland at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Educational inequalities accompanied women at all levels of education. However, the biggest problems were encountered by women in pursuit of tertiary education. It was this path of development that was inaccessible to them for the longest time in Poland. The difficult economic situation of Poles during the Partitions over time forced the society to slowly change the thinking and approach to the academic and professional activity of women. Due to the lack of opportunities to study in the partitioned area, the only possibility for Polish women to study at a higher level was academic emigration. The most common destinations were Switzerland, France, and, in the last decade of the 19th century, also Belgium. The beginnings of the practical struggle for access to tertiary education by women date back to 1892–1910. At this time, emancipation associations were involved in petitioning university authorities to grant women permission to study. This article is an attempt to trace the educational possibilities of women in Poland, with special emphasis placed on women’s aspirations to access academic education at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The article uses the methods of historical and pedagogical research and text analysis.

Opis:
The article traces the process of elaboration of education policies in women’s education in the Northwest of the Russian Empire by different agents of the imperial state on the central and local levels in the 1830s–1860s. The principal goal is not the history of education in a gendered perspective but rather the history of female social roles and national differences in this troubling imperial borderland. The ethnic and confessional markers of difference in the analysis aimed at producing a complex and dynamic picture of conjuncture of social, national, and gender discourses as well as idiosyncratic local considerations in contradictory efforts of imperial social engineering are complicated by the gender marker.

Opis:
A new education of women. Denis Diderot’s anatomy course project for young noble women. Denis Diderot (1713–1784) explained how women’s education should be different than before. A woman should be considered a citizen, Diderot demanded placing primary social importance on her domestic activity. An interesting feature of this new approach to education of women was to include an anatomy course in their personal development. Denis Diderot did not devote a separate tractate to the issue of women’s education, nor did he write a concise curriculum in anatomy. However, the remarks scattered among various texts by the philosopher concerning that innovative concept allow us not only to reconstruct a fairly cohesive draft of an anatomy course for girls, but also superbly illustrate Diderot’s commitment to realization of his own ideas. Secondly, we need to consider the activities of one Ms. Biheron – the organizer of public anatomy courses – which exerted, as we will see, a huge influence on Diderot’s conviction of the need to incorporate such courses in women’s education. In the last part of the discourse, the involvement of the French philosopher in the educational reforms of Catherine II should be noted. The analysis of Diderot’s texts on education clearly indicates that the philosopher put a strong emphasis on changes in the methods of teaching women. As the director of St. Petersburg facility for girls he managed to partially put his project into effect. Of course, for French philosophers – blind to Russian realities –  the unquestionable success of Diderot’s anatomy course might be another argument for the proclamation of the view that Catherine II realized in her country the postulates of the Enlightenment.

Opis:
The article presents the life and educational activities of Blessed Marcelina Darowska, the co-founder of the Convent of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and her views on upbringing of young women. Mother Marcelina’s perception of education of girls in the 19th century seemed modern and beyond her time. In her opinion, there was a need of putting a stop to producing “parlour dolls” and provide young women with practical education. For the betterment of the country, she set up schools in Jazłowiec, Jarosław, Niżniów and Nowy Sącz. The girls attending the schools were brought up according to the system developed by Marcelina Darowska, based on religious and patriotic values. The Convent of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary continues the work commenced by its founder; over time Mother Marcelina’s message remains valid and serves the subsequent generations of young Polish girls.

The question of girl’s education was broadly discussed in the columns of women’s magazines. For the majority of women’s press editorial boards, there were two key issues which dominated in the articles. The first issue was connected with promotion, among women readers, of awareness that providing education for their daughters became necessary in order to compete with men on the job market. The second issue, in turn, concerned the condition of women’s educational system in Polish territories and the direction of development it should evolve in the face of new challenges posed before women in the Second Polish Republic.
