    This article is an attempt at showing how various rationalities, fabulous and creative, influence the organization of the content in a work of poetry, how they intermingle and shape an informative value of a word and how, on a higher level, they decide about the form of a cognitive model. Moreover, the article shows how a change in the perspective of the vision of reality in a poetic work enriches senses whereas the coexistence of the two types of rationality and semantic tensions resulting from this coincidence generates new meanings determined by a special context that a word is used in. The impact of various types of rationality on shaping the meaning of a word in the text has been discussed following the example of the semantics of fern in Young Poland’s poetry.

    The article depicts former, regionally diversified wedding lexis and helps to reconstruct rich nuptial rites hidden behind words, which were still very common in the second half of the 19th century and are now nearly completely forgotten. The resource material used as a basis of considerations herein is a nineteenth century glossary by Z. Gloger Nazwy weselne, wyrażenia i przedmioty używane przy godowych obrzędach ludu na przestrzeni byłej Rzplitej. The set of words recorded by Gloger mostly includes archaisms which not only show a fragment of a historical reality of the language but also reflect an important segment of a family and social life that does not exist anymore in the same old form.

    This article is an attempt to perform a semantic analysis of anatomical vocabulary collected by Michał Abraham Troc in Nowy dykcjonarz, published in Lipsk in 1764. The aim of individual analyses based on the lexical field theory is to demonstrate the meaning of lexemes, to determine their place within a field, as well as to disclose semantic relationships: synonymy, polysemy and hyponymy. The semantic analysis presented in this article clearly demonstrates abundance and differentiation of 18th century anatomical vocabulary, as well as prevalence of native over borrowed words. Among 250 names, only eleven units are borrowings from foreign languages: seven Latin and four German ones. This provides evidence there is a fundamental role of native lexis, especially colloquial vocabulary, in the formation of Polish anatomical terminology, and, more extensively, also medical terminology, in the first phase of its development which continued until the end of the 18th century. Of note is also the non-uniform arrangement of lexemes in individual fields and asymmetry in their number. Selected lexical fields are characterised by non-uniform size, different level of semantic stratification and differentiated degree of generality of words they contain. On the other hand, semantic relations observed in the analysed anatomical vocabulary, especially synonymy and polysemy, confirm there is a differentiation of anatomical lexis, on the other hand, they indicate lack of precision in expressing content by the discussed lexical units.

    The paper presents fundamental achievements of the 18th century Polish lexicography: Nowy dykcjonarz (New Dictionary) by M.A. Troc and Nowy wielki dykcjonarz (New Great Dictionary) by P. Danet and D. Kola, in the context of contemporary research needs (especially those pertaining to historical linguistics) as well as the challenges faced by Polish lexicography (historical lexicography in particular). The primary objective is the identification of lexis comprised in both dictionaries – the linguistic material is reliable and representative of the status and condition of the Polish language of the day. A more profound insight into lexical structure, the analysis of word meanings along with the examination of the frequency of words in particular lexico-semantic fields may be a major contribution to the knowledge of the Polish lexis of mid 18th century and a promising scientific springboard for further research into the development of lexical system of the epoch that still remains a blank spot in Polish lexicology. The two works are also interesting for their cultural value. The units recorded in both lexicons not only show the richness of Polish vocabulary, but they also shed light on the Polish culture. Behind these words are two worlds – the material and the mental/spiritual, the latter hidden beneath the former. The aforementioned challenges for historical lexicography include the need for digitization of the contents of the dictionaries under study. Although they have already been digitized, the present version is far from being easy to use, with the Polish material (especially that in Danet-Kola’s lexicon) still remaining inaccessible.

    The subject of the article are proverbs excerpted from M. A. Trotz’s "Nowy dykcjonarz" which, for different reasons, have not stood the test of time, have been forgotten or replaced by other, easier to understand and more recent constructions, or which are still present in the contemporary language but in a changed form. The proverbs included in M. A. Trotz’s lexicon aremanifestations of a colloquial language. Therefore, in a sense, they imitate the 18th century "paremiotic" system, which was once used but is now largely forgotten. The presentation and characterization of obsolete proverbs do not only fulfill a documentary and cognitive purpose but, above all, visualize dynamism of changes in a language and the world as well as an ensuing need to reach such areas of the language and culture that have been weathered by history.

    The article presents the ways of valuating and the functioning of values in a poetic text. Selected names of flowers appearing in Young Poland’s poetry have been used as the exemplary material. The author aims at indicating how far the general model of valuating, which is established in the standard variety of the Polish language, is reflected in modernistic works, to what extent poetic texts creatively process conventional ways of valuating connected with words referring to flowers, and how far they introduce a reader into a new, or other world of values connected with floral lexis. The analyses presented in the article prove that individual, modernistic ways of valuating the names of flowers and the visions of values connected with flowers differ from those established in the language and culture. Iris, culturally associated with ‘(sophisticated) beauty’, in modernistic poetic texts is a medium of anti-values: ugliness and kitsch; forget-me-not, which is commonly connoted with positively featured ‘memory’, in Young Poland’s lyrics is called a bad weed of memory; rose, stereotypically connected with ‘transcendental good’, in poetry from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries connotes ‘transcendental evil’ and ‘sin’; similar to lily, which conventionally is an image of ‘purity’, ‘innocence’ and ‘virginity’, whereas in Young Poland’s works it evokes ‘eroticism’, ‘passion’, ‘sensual love’ and ‘sin’. The names of flowers in Young Poland’s poetic texts are evaluated by means of different kinds of rhetorical devices and semantic changes: metaphors, personifications, anthropomorphisms, hyperboles, accumulation of epithets, modifications in the connotative sphere of words, as well as categorization, a change of rationality, or symbol exposition, thanks to which traditional valuating of flowers and conventional values connected with them are subject to transformations. In effect of such transformations, valuating becomes ambivalent, positive associations are more often than not destroyed, connotations carrying negative axiological undertone prevail, and values are substituted with anti-values.

    The article attempts to describe Young Poland’s concretization of olfactory sensations. The author adopts a narrower meaning of the concept of synesthesia, therefore she is analyzing metaphors whose olfactory sensations are characterized by the reference to other senses. Moreover, the author’s aim is to establish the content hidden behind linguistic depictions of a scent of flowers, which refers to a sense of taste, touch, sight and hearing. The analyses presented in the article authorize to formulate several conclusions. Most of all, synesthesia metaphors allow to verbalize faintly perceptible aromatic sensations for which there are not too many primary notions. Thus they enrich and refresh a poetic language whose main task is to evoke esthetic feelings. Aromatic synesthesias discussed therein allow not only to depict linguistically something which is difficult to grasp in a language but also something which affect our imagination. Aromatic synesthesias somehow concretize scent, enable its conceptualization. On the other hand, peculiar polysensorics and simultaneous influence on different senses introduce emotional and cognitive ferment through multiplexing experienced emotions and extensive interpretative possibilities. Finally, it is worth adding that the analyzed metaphors, frequently in their shortened and condensed version, convey complicated mixture of sensations and emotions (many a time opposite), which are not easy to name in simple words.

    The article presents a manuscript collection of dialect lexicon from the 2nd half of the 19th century compiled by Artur Doliński. The glossary records the vocabulary characteristic of the folk dialect of the Vilnius area. The author has established that in terms of methodology, Doliński’s work differs from other studies of this type (the entries are not arranged alphabetically, they lack qualifiers or explicataions of how to use a particular word). However, this does not diminish the value of the work under discussion, since the glossary records unknown lexemes from historical Lithuania, and attests to phonetic and grammatical features inherent in the borderland variety of the language. This makes Doliński’s work an important source for the study of Polish dialects in the 19th century Northeastern Borderlands.
