Opis:
The Manggha Museum, the only state institution popularising Japanese culture in Poland, combines museum work with projects typical for a modern cultural institution. In addition to quality of content and artistic form, attractive methods of communication are the primary criteria in devising our programmes of events. The methods developed by the Manggha Museum team enable us to produce insightful and multifaceted presentations of issues that are often very specialised, whether relating to old or modern Japan. Our major projects are accompanied by scholarly conferences and open lectures covering important topics in the political and social history, art history, everyday life, culture and customs of Japan and the Far East. Our Academy of Japanese Cinema is an ongoing project dating back several years. We offer excellent concerts in a wide range of genres, from traditional Asian music to contemporary jazz, classical compositions played by celebrated pianists, and alternative music performances. One of our assets is our special offer for children and young people as well as for the visually-impaired participants. For several years now, we have been preparing special educational exhibitions, featuring interactive playgrounds; our regular events dedicated to children include meetings with Japanese fairy tales, Sunday workshops and the annual Japanese Children’s Day, Kodomo no hi. Our Museum is a Child-Friendly Venue – we have an indoor Japanese playground for our youngest visitors. The Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology also operates a Japanese Language School – the only school in Poland with affiliation to the Japan Foundation – offering language courses at all levels, in addition to calligraphy, the tea ceremony and ikebana classes, special activities for children, and morning classes for senior citizens. There are numerous clubs and associations affiliated with the Museum, promoting various forms of Japanese culture: the tea ceremony, ikebana, bonsai, go and shogi. Since 2011, the Manggha Museum has held the collections forming the Andrzej Wajda Archives. We put a particular emphasis on our exhibitions of old and contemporary art (over 40 a year), which have been widely acknowledged and can be viewed not only at our gallery, but also in many cities across Poland and abroad. The Museum publishes books documenting its exhibitions and lectures and it provides well-researched information in a variety of fields such as culture, art, architecture, anthropology, etc. Our publications are compendia prepared by the best Polish and foreign (frequently Japanese) specialists. Every year, the Manggha Museum is visited by over 100,000 people.

Opis:
The author describes changes in the socioeconomic model of Japan’s growth in the 1990s, with a particular emphasis on economic recession, erosion of labor relations ships and demographics structure transformations, changes in culture and customs, crisis of political leadership and main directions of structural changes, such as reforms of political and administrative systems, liberalization of the economy and strengthening of market mechanisms as well as increasing labor market flexibility. Having reached the current level of development, Japan is unlikely to continue to generate such high growth indicators, as it did over some previous decades. Described phenomena and tendencies demonstrate that the Japanese society one day will face problems similar to those which appear in the West, in relation to economic productivity and political controllability. Economic slowdown in Japan was one of the reasons for the current difficulties in the region of East Asia.

This paper analyzes the question of migration from the Philippines to Japan, which has dominated relations between the two countries since the late 1970s. The Philippines are one of the world’s largest labor exporters. The demographic situation of Japan determines its role as an importer of labor. However, Japanese law and society remain xenophobic. The feminization of Filipino migration to Japan has affected the image associated with Filipinos in Japan and the spectrum of difficulties faced by the Filipino community of Japan, which at the moment numbers over 200,000 persons. Prejudice, law-sanctioned discrimination and cultural differences are among the most prominent issues. This paper discusses the origins of the most significant problems. It also seeks to point at possibilities of future developments in relations between the two societies as well as Japanese and Filipino individuals.

Opis:
The author analyses Japan’s relations with China during the last 30 years, in particular the issue of the peace treaty and its singnificance for their interrelations. He enumerates as the main obstacles which hindered the negotiations: the problem of an “anti-hegemonistic clause”, territorial conflict concerning the Senkaku Islands (Diaoyu) and the Soviet-Chinese treaty of friendship, alliance and mutual co-operation of 1950. Apart from strictly political contradictions, internal political events in both countries played an important role in halting or promoting negotiations. Japan’s distrust in her Chinese partner constituted also an important factor. Eventually the peace treaty was signed in 1978 under the influence of the USA and their positive attitude towards the development of the Japan’s relations with China. The solution of the territorial issue was postponed till indefinite time. In this way Japan’s relations with China have been normalised that contributed significantly to the development of economic co-operation.

Japan’s foreign policy
Japan’s relation with the United States
Opis:
The author concentrates on economic conditions of Japan’s foreign policy. The lack of own raw materials requires effort for steady sources of supply. Another important problem is marketing outlets. Asymmetry between sources and imports and directions of exports leads to almost permanent frictions with highly developed countries, Japan has surplus with. Japan’s foreign policy is based on its alliance with the US, which is accompanied by developed relations in nearly all domains. Japan maintains the most extensive relations with the countries of East and South-East Asia. Geographical proximity and economic complementarity are favorable factors. Although conflict of interests appear also here, they are settled without major problems. History is sometimes an embittering factor. It concerns Korea, China, Vietnam and even Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Japan’s relations with the Western European countries are maintained at a modest, but steady level. Central and Eastern Europe still occupies a modest place in Japan’s policy, although the latter provides relatively large support for cultural, scientific and technological cooperation. Japan - Russia relations are limited. The main obstacle was and still is a dispute over the Kurile Islands, which were occupied by the Soviet Union in the final stage of the World War Two. While declaring their willingness to settle the problem, both sides maintain their positions, which makes it difficult to actuate of their political and economic cooperation.

Opis:
For years, the Japanese government propagated the image of Japan as a culturally and ethnically homogenous entity. The official stance has changed, but the vision of “exceptional Japan” is still powerful and it is shared by numerous Japanese, even though there are minority groups of the Korean and the Chinese descent. They have been brought in to forced labor during the World War II. There are also the indigenous people of the Japanese archipelago: the Ainu, presently living on the northern island of Hokkaidō, or the burakumin – the former outcasts, and at the south the inhabitants of the Ryūkyū archipelago within boundaries of the present day prefecture of Okinawa. The study analyses this prefecture, although it offers a wide range of issues relevant also to other minority groups elsewhere in Japan. The “Okinawa problem ” (Okinawa mondai) is the euphemism by which the Japanese offi cials conceal the political and economic discrimination that the prefecture has suffered in the result of its historic, cultural, geographic, political and social differences. The authoress discusses the geo-cultural characteristics of Okinawa, its historical background since the time of Ryūkyū Kingdom, the problem of the American military bases covering approximately 20% of the most populous main island. The American presence constitutes the key to the “Okinawa problem” because of the prefecture’s economic diffi culties arising thereof. She also points out the implications of this particular situation to local politics. The study rejects the often-cited opinion that the essential problems of the prefecture cannot be solved due to its peripheral location. The authoress points out that a change for the better is conceivable, but might be expected only in case of transfer of power from the long-ruling, conservative and pro-American Liberal Democratic Party to a more open-minded political groupings.

Opis:
This paper explains the origins of the phenomenon known as the lifetime employment system in Japan. For many years, lifetime employment was one of the most characteristic elements of a specific management system in Japanese corporations. During the years of rapid development, this system was praised as one of the essential elements which contributed to Japan’s economic success. Since the 1990’s, when the Japanese economy entered the period of prolonged stagnation, numerous critical voices have blamed lifetime employment as one of the main culprits of their economic problems. Some experts state that it is time to abolish the system, while others say that the system is so deeply rooted in Japanese post-war history, that it could not disappear so quickly. To understand the future of lifetime employment, it is necessary to examine the historical process of its evolution. The author analyses factors that have contributed to the creation of the system and in the conclusion, tries to point to the possible course of its future evolution.

Opis:
Japan is the first country in Asia where the economic growth and increase in welfare have brought about a demographic collapse. In 1997 there was a sudden decline in birth-rate and since that time the population of thecountry has been decreasing steadily. At the same time the number of elderly people(about 65 years old) has been increasing and the number of people in the production age (between 15 and 64 years old) has been declining. In 2010 there were 127 million Japanese out of which one third was 60 years old. This is a highly unfavourable demographic structure and Japan may face a shortage of labor force in two decades. Similar trends have occurred in China, mostly due to the one-child policy introduced at the end of the 1970s. One of its most visible effects is the masculinization of Chinese population. In 2009 there were more than 119 men for 100 women (in some provinces even 134). The birth rate, rigidly controlled by the government, also resulted in an accelerated ageing of Chinese population. In 2010 there were 167 million people in China over 60 and in 2030 there will be almost 20 per cent of total population. In order to avoid labor force shortage China has to change its production structure and develop rather capital- than labor-intensive branches of industry and services.
