    The primary goal of this essay is to describe the connections between intercultural pedagogical theory and its practical applications in music education. The author stresses the significance of this particular field of education and its impact on young people. When anchored in a variety of cultures, musical phenomena provide a unique opportunity to initiate students into a world in which the beauty and aesthetic values of the other are experienced and reflected upon. At the same time, they encourage students to engage in a dialogue with the other through non-verbal channels of communication. Intercultural music education usually follows two conceptual models: one centered on activities, such as singing, dance, and playing musical instruments, and the other, focusing on the listening experience to world music. Praktyczne zastosowania teorii pedagogiki... 29 Intercultural music education is typically pursued using folk music as the most primeval form of human activity. Folk music is also used as an inspiration for musical stylization. It must be emphasized that composers often used this source of inspiration to create outstanding musical works. Sacred music provides a unique means to engage with the spiritual sphere inherent in other cultures. This particular form helps to discover aesthetic qualities in music and explore the depths of religious experience in other people, as well as the space of their religion-driven existential pursuits that are exemplified in music.

    Opis:
    The article begins by explaining the origins of Gypsies with an emphasis on the linguistic and anthropological theories tracing Indian decadency of Gypsies. Drawing from historical documents as well as poetry and other sources, the authors presents the association of Gypsies with music. The aritcle offers an explanation why Gypsies were often engaged in music making for money and linked with medieval travelling troupes performing entertainment shows. The article also highlights the origins of stereotypes associated with Gypsies. The author pays special attention to the forming of the image of a Hungarian Gypsy claiming that the widely spread vision of a Gypsy musician is stereotypically associated with Gypsy musicians from Habsburg Monarchy, playing in so-called Zigeunerkapellen. In addition, the musical traditions of Spanish Gypsies are presented, since the author believes that the Gypsy-musician stereotype is closely linked with the fate of Gypsies in Europe.

    This text describes the place of music in the resocialisation of socially maladjusted youth. The cited investigations showed how the use of music in the process of education was used as something active, initiating creative activities. Music and musical experience, in a sense, have helped socially lost adolescents to meet many needs without harming others. Contact with valuable music of their preference has contributed to the joy and satisfaction of experiencing music through its reproduction and creation.

    This paper aims to present the views (supported by the latest scientific research) on the relationship between an individual’s musical development and language acquisition. This paper also describes the challenges that experts in early education must face. The analysis of the relationship between musical development and language acquisition begins with the discussion (based primarily on the works by John A. Slobody, Aniruddh Patel, and Edwin E. Gordon) on what is similar and what is different where music and language are concerned. Further, models of both musical and language development (by Anthony Brandt, Molly Gebrian and L. Robert Slevc) as well as children’s early acquisition of both music and language are all described. Sharing the view that the two processes may be regarded as parallel, i.e. that of children’s musical development and that of their first language acquisition, and taking into consideration that the processes differ, the present author addresses the related challenges for the early education and indicates the concept of social constructivism (by L.S. Vygotsky) as the most relevant paradigm for the language and musical education.

    Opis:
    National values were the particularly exposed element of Polish music of interwar period. It clearly fited into the model of state education which was strongly promoted those days. National problem remains in the circle of keen interest in music criticism. Polish music of the Renaissance tried to present it as a discipline that was comparable to European music in terms of values. An image of Poland was formed as of a country with a rich and old cultural tradition. This thesis was willingly used by the politicians which is confirmed by music related critical articles concerning performances of Swiss chamber choire “Motet et Madrigal” in Poland in April of 1923. Choire was founded by the eminent Polish composer and conductor Henryk Opieński. This article is an attempt to analyze reviews, which appeared in the press during the tour of the ensamble. Those reviews were published by the newspapers of Cracow, Warsaw, Poznań, Łódź and Bydgoszcz and have been analyzed by the author in terms of their musical as well as political references.

    Opis:
    Multicultural inspirations in the works of modern composers from Gdańsk are phenomena that became a part of tradition, social structure, geographical situation, and the history of Gdańsk. In the diversified musical environment of the post-war Gdańsk, the three groups of composers active in the city are recognized. The first group includes the native- born composers; the second group consists of composers who came from different parts of Poland and settled in Gdańsk; the third group (the most difficult to compartmen talize) includes composers temporarily living in the city. The examination of artistic achievements of Gdańsk composers after the Second War World reveals three distinct domains of multicultural inspirations. The first involves cultural fascination with remote places of Europe and the world. The second draws on inspiration from the native folk culture, including the Kashubian folklore. The third domain borrows from the mass culture that aspires to the rank of sophisticated art.

    Music therapy is a field that is undergoing intense development. At the same time, as the interest in music therapy increases, there are more and more distortions about what forms of contact with music can be described as music therapy. It is coming to the situation in which either the area of music therapy is significantly narrowing or, on the contrary, all forms of contact with music are attributed to it. The author attempts to explain what lies behind the term music therapy, refuting at the same time myths that commonly exist in the media. He uses this polemic as a background to show the humanistic nature of this form of therapy.

    Piosenki Marka Grechuty – mimo upływających lat nieustająco popularne – stanowią przykład twórczości niebagatelnej, mocno osadzonej w tradycjach kultury polskiej (m.in. ze względu na wykorzystywane w nich teksty), ale także mogą stać się potencjalnym materiałem dydaktycznym, z powodzeniem wykorzystywanym w edukacji muzycznej dzieci i młodzieży. Po pierwsze bowiem, piosenki Grechuty – będące umuzycznionymi wersjami przepięknych wierszy polskich poetów – niejednorodnie czynią bardziej atrakcyjnymi treści zawarte w tych wersach, warstwą muzyczną podkreślając ich wymowę i przekaz. Po drugie, niektóre ze swoich albumów Grechuta, bezpośrednio lub niekiedy w nieco bardziej zawoalowany sposób, kierował do młodszych odbiorców, głównie dzieci, ale też młodzieży. Po trzecie, piosenki Grechuty stanowią wdzięczny materiał do aranżacji wielogłosowych, które mogą być z powodzeniem wykonywane przez chóry – zarówno szkolne, jak i profesjonalne. Przede wszystkim jednak w twórczości Grechuty w udany sposób zostały złączone dwie stylistyki muzyczne: uznawana powszechnie za „poważną”, klasyczną oraz funkcjonującą pod szyldem „muzyki popularnej”. Wydaje się, że poprzez odwołanie się do spuścizny tego wielkiego artysty można dokonać w edukacji muzycznej rzeczy bardzo trudnej: pokusić się o wprowadzenie młodzieży w świat wyrafinowanej polskiej poezji oraz świat wielorakich brzmień instrumentalnych i wokalnych, jednocześnie nie tracąc nic z atrakcyjności – jakże lubianego przez młodych słuchaczy – repertuaru popularnego.
    Marek Grechuta’s songs – still popular despite the passing years, are fine examples of great creativity, deeply embedded in the traditions of Polish culture (among others due to their lyrics). Not only do they reveal timeless values, but they also inspire new generations of composers proposing covers and arrangements of these songs thus enriching our Polish music culture. Marek Grechuta’s songs can potentially also become teaching materials in music education for children and young people. The article presents the life and career of Grechuta, indicates problems with classifying his artistic output, and highlights the importance of his albums dedicated to children and young people. Numerous covers of Grechuta’s songs are also mentioned as well as successful attempts at their polyphonic arrangements, which – as it is argued – may be treated as an interesting proposal in pedagogical work.

    In the introduction, the author focuses on Roma themes and motifs that inspired various 19th century composers. A Roma poetess, Bronisława Wajs, or Papusza, is discussed as an artist creating spoken songs derived from the folk song tradition. Next, the essay provides an overview of contemporary musical works inspired by Bronisława Wajs’s oeuvre, specifically Jan Kanty-Pawluśkiewicz’s symphonic poem Harfy Papuszy. In addition, the author offers suggestions for the bel canto technique and folk styles of singing in stylized works resembling world music – Roma music, in particular.

    The paper describes the phenomenon of multiculturalism at the International Festival of Sacred Music Gaude Mater in Częstochowa. The festival has been running since 1991. It includes a variety of artistic events, most of them sacred music concerts (Gregorian chant, early music, Orthodox, Polish music from all historical periods, and premieres). The festival also promotes the musical culture of Jasna Góra. The special feature of the festival is its multiculturalism involving the presentation of non-Christian sacred music. In the years 1991-2010, the festival featured Jewish, Muslim, Egyptian, and African music. The dialogue between cultures also facilitates connections between high and mass culture. This is accomplished through various combinations of gospel, jazz, pop elements with classical music. In addition, the attempts of dialogue between different cultures furnish a number of non-musical events, such as theatre performance, arts exhibitions, and conferences.

    The article discusses the problem of creating an environment conducive to shaping the attitude of reflexivity of future music teachers. The work presents the achievements in this area by institutes in selected universities in Poland and Ukraine. The conditions for creating pedagogical self-sufficiency of students were the subject of consideration. The authors describe the essence of such concepts as “pedagogical self-efficacy”, “pedagogical reflection”, “evaluation environment” and their approximation in the process of increasing a teacher’s professionalism. They thus clarified the essence of the pedagogical effectiveness of their own educator–musicians and showed the place and role of the reflective and evaluation environment in the process of its formation.

    Opis:
    One of the biggest challenges in Poland (1918-1939) was the establishment of a new Polish school. The main goal of the newly created Polish school was to educate a generation as patriots and responsible citizens, and unite compatriots from three ex-partitions. The first school curriculum in the independent Poland focused on teaching social knowledge, Polish and European cultures, and, above all, providing pupils with moral and aesthetic experience. Music education played a key role in bringing various ideological objectives to fruition. Music compositions with national themes – both from concert and folk traditions – were worshipped and seen as the rebirth of the national culture. The goal of music instruction was to educate the young generation, bring it closer to the ideas embedded in the masterpieces of art, and deepen their love of music.

    Opis:
    In the study Happy Lands of Red Ruthenia in selected renaissance and baroque poets’ literary creations there were explored associations of literary space with European poetry’s tradition, especially Italian, as well as with native tradition vested with local habits and ceremonies. Those affiliations created in Sebastian Fabian Klonowic, Szymon Zimorowic and Józef Bartłomiej Zimorowic’s chosen pieces. Studies contained Sebastian Fabian Klonowic’s poem Roksolania czyli ziemie Czerwonej Rusi and Zimorowic brothers’ poetic cycles Roksolanki and Sielanki nowe ruskie. Thematics of those pieces pertain to space and tradition of Red Ruthenia, however it is possible to indicate affiliations with Mediterranean culture in them (especially in context of conventional speech poetics connected with mythological and mythical literary tradition). Analyzed pieces confirm that renaissance and baroque’s culture of former Republic of Poland shaped under the influence of European heritage. At the same time, for Mediterranean those pieces could become a source of inspiration (for example Zimorowic brothers’ bucolic cycles correspond with music and former dances) or knowledge (Klonowic’s poem shows unknown areas of Republic of Poland’s southeast borders for European reader). An image of nature and Red Ruthenia’s literary landscape, which appears in those poets’ works, places their legacy in the circle of convention, tradition and universal values.
