 In the first phase of bringing the Order of the Holy Sepulchre down to Poland in 1163, bishops of dioceses were founders and donors of the Order (Cracow Bishop Gedko, Plock Bishop Lapus) and acknowledged the foundations as the heritage left by their predecessors. In 15th Century they were Gniezno Archbishop Mikołaj Trąba and Kiev Bishop Michał Treska. Since 14th Century the assets belonging to the Order of Holy Sepulchre had been titbits for bishops, especially for the poorer dioceses but also for Cracow bishops (Piotr Gamrat). Conflicts arose from recruitment procedures conducted in the Order where bishops employed diocesan priests. Since 1567 or the establishment of the commendation, commendatory provosts, where bishops had been in majority, had contributed to moral decline of the Order. The positive conduct of Andrzej Batory and Maciej Łubieński exclusively stood out. Permanent disputes among bishops, the king, and the monastery for material benefits derivable from the Order’s assets, bad examples set by commendatory provosts, the lack of authority and authoritarianism resulted in the laxity of morals in the Order and concurrently accounted for the relaxation of discipline, violation of the rules and laws made by the Order, sloth, idleness, drunkenness and immorality. In 18th Century the attempts to reform the Order, made by the provosts, were insufficient and unsuccessful to control the status quo in the Order because of the bad example that came from the top.

The author of this article showed the positive role of the religious book and press informing the Polish society of the life and activity of the founder of the Society of Saint Francis de Sales. Even in the lifespan of St. John Bosco, his biographies were translated into Polish and printed in Cracow, Lvov, Poznan and Warsaw. Since 1898, the Polish edition of the Salesian Bulletin entitled „Wiadomości Salezjańskie”, which soon became „Pokłosie Salezjańskie” (in 1916). Between the two world wars, the most publications about St. John Bosco came out owing to his beatification and canonization (1929, 1934). After the War II „Pokłosie Salezjańskie” was being edited until the close-down of the publishing office (1949). The Salesians revived Salesian Publications during the time of the communist censorship (1976), they managed to publish several biographies of St. John Bosco, and two books dedicated to him bring from abroad ( Italy, the UK). Articles on the subject of the Great Educator of the young were published in the internal periodical – „Nostra”, and in the annual „Seminare” which was not coming out on a regular basis in 1975-1988. After having initiated cooperation with the publication Elle Di Ci in Turin, the Polish reader has access to a wide spectrum of books edited in the Salesian Society worldwide.

Formed during the crusading movement, the Teutonic Knights developed the internal structures in the Holy Land after the act of 1198, structures which survived several centuries and proved to be very useful in the process of building their own state in Prussia. The following work briefly presents the offices of the deputy of the Grandmaster and the chief of military affairs, the official responsible for all hospital affairs, the official responsible for dressing and armament, the treasurer and the castellan. All these officials, except for the castellan, formed the group of the great nobles in Prussia from the 14th century. The increase in property outside the Holy Land contributed to the vertical power structure. A pioneering period in the history of the Teutonic Knights ended during the reign of Grand Master Hermann von Salza; then a new period of building their own state on the Baltic began. Equipped with the imperial privilege, the Teutonic Knights came to the Vistula, where they received from Konrad Mazowiecki in 1230 the privilege conferring the land of Chełmn on them, the land which was the territorial base of their future activity in Prussia. Since then, supported by the knights from western Europe and Germany, they systematically had been conquering Prussia. In the early period of the conquest Polish dukes also helped them. The Teutonic Knights were the winners in the dispute with the Bishop of Prussia, Christian. After suppressing two Prussian uprisings and conquering the land of Jaćwież, the Teutonic Order reached the line of the Niemen and strengthened its reign in the whole Prussia. The organization of the formed religious state was of monarchical type. Dualistic, that is, theocratic and feudal character of the state affected administrative divisions introduced by the Knights. They built well-functioning administration, whose characteristic feature was the division into commandries. Although the number of commandries was not steady and the range of their influence would change, generally the primary administrative divisions survived until the fall of the monastic state in Prussia. Among the source material used in this work the chronicles included in Scriptores Rerum Prusicarum are of the basic importance. These chronicles are as follows: The Prussian Chronicle by Peter of Dusburg, The Chronicle of Oliwa by Abbot Stanislaus. In addition, the author used works by German and Polish historians such as: the works of Gerard Labuda, Marian Biskup, Sławomir Jóźwiak, the collective work edited by Zenon Hubert Nowak, S. Kujot, Hartmut Boockmann, Udo Arnold. The full list of the used sources and literature is in the footnotes.

The inspiration for writing this article was “A small chronicle of the residence of the Carmelites of the Ancient Observance in Poznań”. The following work is the first study based on sources concerning directly the monks from the province of Great Poland. The presented data refl ect only the information included in the given sources and publications and they are the basis for the further study on this monastic family. The study focuses on the Carmelites of the Ancient Observance in the Great Poland Province from 1686, the year when they came into their own, to the dissoluton of the orders in the 19th century. The article is not the catalogue of the monks; it only shows the basic biographical details, which should be confronted with other sources. This source study does not follow the current standards either; it is only the compilation of a few sources. In this way we can gain more details about particular monks. These are not probably all monks of this province, and the subsequent manuscripts and publications will show new characters.
