    The Catholic church in Poland undertook steps to provide optimal pastoral care for the Polish people abroad. These activities were formalized through the creation of the Polish Catholic Missions. The first Polish Catholic Mission was created in France (1922), next one in January 1926 in Belgium. This mission extended its power over Denmark, Holland (1927). The priests who successively held the office of Rector of the Polish Catholic Missions: T. Kotowski, W. Kudłacik and R. Moskwa organized pastoral, cultural, educational life among the Polish people and left, in the form of statements and reports, the descriptions of the condition and situation of the Polish emigrants abroad.

    The publication focuses on the fragment of the inventory of the archival fonds no1: Provincial Office in Lviv, the description no 14: the department of religious denominations from the collections of the State Archive of the Lviv region in Lviv. The archival inventory was described in 1972 in the Russian language by the Soviet archivists in accordance with the principles of the archives in the USSR. The following edition contains the selected archival units which contain sources concerning the activities of the Roman Catholic Church and the Armenian Catholic Church.  In terms of the territorial range in the aspect of the state administration, the materials refer to the region of Lviv, Tarnopol and Stanisławów. In terms of the Roman Catholic Church administration, they cover the area of the Archdiocese of Lviv, the Diocese of Przemyśl and Tarnów. In the case of the Armenian Catholic Church, they refer to the Armenian   Archdiocese with the seat in Lviv. Archival materials forming the description no 14 were produced by the offices of the state administration at various levels and ecclesiastical offices: the diocesan curia, the cathedral chapter, parish offices and theological seminaries, the representatives of the clergy and laity. The discussed archival units include the following materials: sources for the erection and the administrative division of the parish;  grants for the renovation and construction works and the equipment of the church; the financial and economic documentation; materials referring to the land and property of the Church, the repayment of taxes, leasing; the records relating to the diocesan clergy, among others, nominations for the parish priests and the payment of wages and subsidies; the archival materials concerning theological seminaries, the diocesan curia, cathedral chapters; the documents on the activities of the Provincial Office and the Religious Fund, among others, reports on the distribution of funds allocated by the authorities to the Church; as well as sources on the territorial organization of the Church and documentation (mainly financial and economic) on the activity of male and female religious congregations.

    Die Emigration aus den polnischen Gebieten begann seit der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts beträchtliche Ausmaße anzunehmen. Die Gesamtzahl der Emigranten aus dem Königreich Polen (Kongresspolen) ins Innere Russlands betrug ungefähr 400.000 bis 600.000 Personen (Stand um 1910). Die römisch-katholischen Kirchen in den sibirischen Dörfern entstanden auf Initiative ihrer Bewohner, nicht selten erst nach jahrelangen Kämpfen mit der russischen Bürokratie. Besonders benötigten die polnischen Katholiken in der Gemeinde Salbinsk im Bezirk Minussinsk eine Kirche, weil die 400 km betragende Entferung von Krasnojarsk nur seltene Seelsorgebesuche eines Priesters erlaubte. Da sie von den örtlichen Behörden keinerlei Unterstützung erhielten, wandten sich die Ansiedler an die römisch-katholischen Diözesen in den westlichen Verwaltungsbezirken Russlands. Im Ergebnis langwieriger Bemühungen wurde diese Kirche dann auch gebaut, aber nicht in Algasztyk, sondern in der Tjulginsk-Kolonie Kreslawka. Nach Erlangung der Baugenehmigung im Jahre 1906 besteuerte sich die Pfarrgemeinde selbst mit je 40 Kopeken pro Person, um das nötige Baumaterial einkaufen und herbeischaffen zu können, während der Arbeitslohn jeweils aus Regierungsmitteln ausgezahlt wurde. 1908 wurde die Holzkirche St. Antonius eingeweiht, und Ksawery Marcynian wurde ihr erster Pfarrer. In einer ähnlichen Kampfsituation mit der russischen Verwaltungsbürokratie befanden sich auch die Bewohner des Dorfes Kanok in der Gemeinde Rybinsk, die aus dem Gouvernement Grodno nach Sibirien gekommen waren. Gegen Ende des Jahres 1907 wurde die der Gottesmutter vom Tor der Morgenröte (Matka Boża Ostrobramska) geweihte Kirche errichtet. Zweimal im Jahr kamen Priester aus der Heimatpfarrei hierher, um die nötige Seelsorgearbeit zu leisten. Die Abneigung der Behörden, den Kirchenbau in den Dörfern polnischer Sibiriensiedler zu unterstützen, minderte den Migrationsprozess polnischer Bauern. Der Ausbruch des 1. Weltkrieges 1914 setzte dann der freiwilligen Ansiedlungsmigration der Polen nach Sibirien ein Ende.

    In 1928, society of the thriving borderland city of Baranowicze Poleskie launched a commendable initiative, the aim of which was to create another pastoral centre in that city for the local faithful of the Roman Rite. Those initiatives were made with great care for the spiritual good of the local faithful. The Executive Committee of the Church Construction appointed for that purpose in Baranowicze, then renamed the Citizens’ Committee of the Church Construction, did not take account of church law and practice in its structure. With a lay person being in charge, it did not receive approval of the ordinary of the Diocese of Pińsk, and thus efforts to build a church could not be carried out in accordance with expectations. It was not until 1934- when the parish priest and dean of Baranowicze, Rev. Jan Borysiuk, became the president of the Committee, that the relations with the diocesan ecclesiastical authority were normalised-that authority was the one which took decisions regarding the ongoing construction work in the new pastoral centre in Baranowicze. Long-term efforts on the creation of a new parish in that town resulted in erection- on 23 January 1937- the parish dedicated to Our Lady Queen of the Polish Crown and the appointment of its first parish priest Rev.Antoni Kohutnicki.

    Artykuł został poświęcony wybranym zespołom zasobu archiwalnego Polskiej Misji Katolickiej, w którym omówiono znalezione tam fotografie w kontekście historycznym. Zachowany materiał przedstawia uroczystości religijne oraz patronalne poszczególnych stowarzyszeń polonijnych. Zaprezentowano także zdjęcia obiektów sakralnych, fotografie dokumentujące pomoc Polsce w okresie stanu wojennego, a także te znajdujace się w organach prasowych Polskiej Misji Katolickiej: „Polak we Francji”, „Polska Wierna”, „Glos Katolicki”. W dalszej kolejnosci przedstawiono fotografie w zbiorach luźnych. Najstarsze z nich dotyczą wydarzeń po 1919 r., kiedy Polacy przybyli do Francji w celach zarobkowych. Po I wojnie światowej Francja potrzebowała rąk do pracy, głównie w kopalniach, toteż szukała ich w wielu miejscach, również w niedawno odrodzonej Polsce. Zaprezentowano także zdjęcia obozowe, przekazane Archiwum PMK przez Barbarę Kujawską-Biernat, córkę bratanicy zmarłego ks. prałata Wiktora Miedzińskiego, który w latach 1945-1958 był polskim duszpasterzem w Metzu.
    This article focuses on the photographs included in selected record groups in the Archives of the Polish Catholic Mission and discusses them in their historical context. The preserved material presents religious celebrations and patronal feasts of individual associations of the Polish diaspora. The paper also describes the photographs of religious buildings, those documenting support given to Poland when martial law was in force, and those found in the press organs of the Polish Catholic Mission: “Polak we Francji”, “Polska Wierna” and “Glos Katolicki”. The further part contains photographs in loose collections. The oldest ones relate to the events after 1919, when Poles arrived in France for economic reasons. After World War I, France needed workers, particularly in mines, and looked for them in numerous places, including Poland. The article also presents camp photographs, given to the Archives of the Polish Catholic Mission by Barbara Kujawska-Biernat, the daughter of the niece of Prelate Wiktor Miedziński, who worked as a Polish priest in Metz from 1945 to 1958.

    Opis:
    Mikaszewicze in Polesie, Poland, developed quite intensely thanks to the construction of the railway, the factory of plywood and the sawmill. This town developed after Poland regained its independence in 1918. The factories which were built there attracted a number of workers, which led to the creation of a fairly large town with a workers' settlement in 1938. Then there was a need to erect a separate parish and, given that the neighbouring villages of Rudnia, Morszczynowicze and Zaprosie accepted the Orthodox faith in the period of Poland’s captivity. Initially, the parish priests from Dawidgródek and Łachwa celebrated church services in private houses and later in the school in Mikaszewicze. In 1923, attempts were made to establish a new pastoral and parish centre. In 1927, the Ordinary of Pińsk erected a parish dedicated to the Queen of the Crown of Poland, and Rev. Paweł Stepak was appointed a parish priest. The church, built in a mixture of Gothic and Romanesque style, was consecrated on 18 July 1937 by Bishop Kazimierz Bukraba.

    Opis:
    The Polish city of Brest on the Bug (the Eastern borderlands), developing after World War I, needed another Roman Catholic Church for the local faithful. Granting the requests of the faithful, the bishop of Pińsk Zygmunt Łoziński canonically erected - on 2 January 1932- the Parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which was the second parish in Brest, with the Parish of Elevation of the Holy Cross being the first one. Rev. Józef Moniuszko was the first parish priest and its organizer. The bishop sent one vicar to help him in parish work. Soon some parish groups of the faithful were organized: the Third Order of St. Francis of Assisi, the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith, Brotherhood of the Guard of Honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Association of “ Mary’s Children”. All of those groups intensified the religious life of the parish.
