Opis:
Work on increasing the efficiency of heat exchangers used in car air conditioning systems may lead to a partial change in the construction of refrigeration systems. One of such changes is the use of smaller gas coolers, which directly translates into a reduction in the production costs of the entire system. The article presents the use of computational fluid dynamics methods to simulate the impact of changing the shape of an internal heat exchanger on the cooling efficiency with R744 as the refrigerant. Internal heat exchangers with different geometry of the outer channels were subjected to numerical analysis. The obtained results of calculations show temperature changes in inner and outer channels on the length of the heat exchanger.

Opis:
Increasing of the efficiency of convective cooling of the inner surface of a short duct by changing its geometry was studied by the use of electrochemical limiting current technique (ELDCT). The duct consisted of seven identical, cylindrical segments. The changes of the duct geometry were obtained by mutual displacement of neighbouring segments, towards the radial direction. Mean values of the mass transfer coefficient for each segment and friction losses for the whole channel were measured for Reynolds numbers spanning the range 7700–35300 at the five values of displacement parameter. The results were used for estimation of cooling efficiency. Recommended values of displacement were determined to point the favourable conditions of heat/mass transfer in the duct. The results may be used, e.g. in the design of heat exchangers and channels for cooling of turbine blades and electronic equipment.

Opis:
This paper presents the influence of cooling water regulation on power plant net efficiency. It was examined whether, for the non-nominal low-pressure turbine load, it is justified to reduce the cooling water pump load, and how it would affect the unit net efficiency. Calculations for two types of power units were carried out: with condensing and extraction-condensing turbine. The tested condensing power plant consists of three surface condensers. The calculation included four condensers’ connections set up on the cooling water side to check how the cooling water system pressure drop affects the net unit performance. The result has confirmed that implementing serial connection decreases net efficiency when cooling water flow regulation is used, but the mixed connection should be applied when pump load is not controlled. It was proved that the cooling water flow control gives a profit for both units. Net efficiency for combined heat and power plant can be improved by 0.1–0.5 pp, the gain is remarkable below 60% of the low-pressure turbine part load. Flow control implementation in the unit with condensing turbine water control gives a similar profit just below 80% of the turbine load. Next, an influence of the additional limitations of a cooling water system (minimal total pump head, cooling tower) affecting the feasibility of implementing the water control has been considered. Applying a multi-cell forced draft cooling tower does not have a significant impact on results, but when a natural draft cooling tower is used, the flow control range is strongly reduced.

Opis:
The problem presented in this paper refers to the concepts applied to the design of supercritical steam turbines. The issue under the investigation is the presence of a cooling system. Cooling systems aim to protect the main components of the turbines against overheating. However the cooling flows mix with the main flow and modify the expansion line in the steam path. This affects the expansion process in the turbine and changes the performance when compared to the uncooled turbine. The analysis described here investigates the range of the influence of the cooling system on the turbine cycle. This influence is measured mainly through the change of the power generation efficiency. The paper explains the approach towards the assessment of the cooling effects and presents results of the modeling for three supercritical steam cycles.

Opis:
The development of a reliable mathematical model of an axial compressor requires applying flow and efficiency characteristics. This approach provides performance parameters of a machine depending on varying conditions. In this paper, a method for developing characteristics of an axial compressor is presented, based on general compressor maps available in the literature or measurement data from industrial facilities. The novelty that constitutes the core of this article is introducing an improved method describing the performance lines of an axial compressor with the modified ellipse equation. The proposed model is extended with bleed air extraction for the purposes of cooling the blades in the expander part of the gas turbine. The variable inlet guide vanes angle is also considered using the vane angle correction factor. All developed dependencies are fully analytical. The presented approach does not require knowledge of machine geometry. The set of input parameters is based on reference data. The presented approach makes it possible to determine the allowed operating area and study the machine’s performance in variable conditions. The introduced mathematical correlations provide a fully analytical study of optimum operating points concerning the chosen criterion. The final section presents a mathematical model of an axial compressor built using the developed method. A detailed study of the exemplary flow and efficiency characteristics of an axial compressor operating with a gas turbine is also provided.

Opis:
The paper presents a theoretical analysis of thermal energy storage filled with phase change material (PCM) that is aimed at optimization of an adsorption chiller performance in an air-conditioning system. The equations describing a lumped parameter model were used to analyze internal heat transfer in the cooling installation. Those equations result from the energy balances of the chiller, PCM thermal storage unit and heat load. The influence of the control of the heat transfer fluid flow rate and heat capacity of the system components on the whole system operation was investigated. The model was used to validate the selection of Rubitherm RT62HC as a PCM for thermal storage. It also allowed us to assess the temperature levels that are likely to appear during the operation of the system before it will be constructed.
