Opis:
TAGS-90 compound powder was directly prepared from the elements by high-energy ball milling (HEBM) and subsequently consolidated by a spark plasma sintering (SPS). Effect of milling time on the microstructure and thermoelectric properties of the samples were investigated. The particle size of fabricated powders were decreased with increasing milling time, finally fine particles with ~1μm size was obtained at 90 min. The SPS samples exhibited higher relative densities (>99%) with fine grain size. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and energy dispersion analysis (EDS) results revealed that all the samples were single phase of GeTe with exact composition. The electrical conductivity of samples were decreased with milling time, whereas Seebeck coefficient increased over the temperature range of RT~450°C. The highest power factor was 1.12×10-3 W/mK2 obtained for the sample with 90 min milling at 450°C.

Opis:
Due to an excellent combination of toughness and strength, bainitic-austenitic dual phase steels with silicon addition have many applications in the industry. However, silicon has a high affinity to oxygen and, therefore, its introduction to the alloy is problematic during the classical sintering processes of mixing powders. Mechanical alloying (MA) offers one of the most attractive alternatives to the introduction of silicon to Astaloy CrM powders. The aim of the present study was to determine the influence of the MA process on changes in particle size distribution, work hardening and sintering behaviour of the investigated powder mixture - Astaloy CrM powder with the addition of 2 wt.% stearic acid and 2 wt.% silicon carbide alloyed under different conditions. The practical aspect of this study was to develop and apply a common and inexpensive method of die-pressing to compact a powder mixture prepared by the MA process.
Dwufazowe stale bainityczno-austenityczne ze względu na swoje właściwości wytrzymałościowe i plastyczne maja coraz szersze zastosowanie w przemyśle. Jednakże wprowadzanie do składu mieszanek dodatku krzemu nastręcza wiele problemów technologicznych podczas klasycznego spiekania materiałów proszkowych m.in. poprzez duże powinowactwo tego pierwiastku do tlenu. Proces mechanicznego stopowania oferuje jedno z alternatywnych rozwiązań wprowadzenia krzemu do niskostopowych proszków Astaloy CrM. W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badan wpływu procesu mechanicznego stopowania na zmiany wielkości cząstek proszku, ich utwardzenie oraz efekty zachodzące podczas spiekania mieszanek: Astaloy CrM z dodatkiem 2% wg kwasu stearynowego.

The crystallization behavior has been studied in Zr62Al8Ni13Cu17 metallic glass alloy. The Zr62Al8Ni13Cu17 metallic glass crystallized through two steps. The fcc Zr2Ni phase transformed from the amorphous matrix during first crystallization and then the Zr2Ni and residual amorphous matrix transformed into a mixture of tetragonal Zr2Cu and hexagonal Zr6Al2Ni phases. Johnson- Mehl-Avrami analysis of isothermal transformation data suggested that the formation of crystalline phase is primary crystallization by diffusion-controlled growth.

Powdered polyaniline (PANI) was synthesised chemically with different doping anions namely hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid and para-toluenesulfonic acid (pTSA). Two-step synthetic procedure was utilised at low temperature. The highest reaction efficiency was found for chlorine-doped PANI. Structural characterization with FTIR revealed the vibration bands characteristicto formation of the emeraldine salt. The surface morphology of doped PANIs was studied by SEM images which showed near globular shape and porous structures with different size of the aggregated particles. They were smaller for Cl-- or pTS--doped PANI while for SO4 2- the size was markedly larger. The XRD patterns revealed that there are ordered regions especially for pTS- doped PANI, while the highest conductivity value was recorded for Cl- doped one followed by organic pTS- doped and SO4 2- doped one.

The objective of this particular study was to recover valuable metals from waste plasma display panels using high energy ball milling with subsequent acid dissolution. Dissolution of milled (PDP) powder was studied in HCl, HNO3, and H2SO4 acidic solutions. The effects of dissolution acid, temperature, time, and PDP scrap powder to acid ratio on the leaching process were investigated and the most favorable conditions were found: (1) valuable metals (In, Ag, Mg) were recovered from PDP powder in a mixture of concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl:H2O = 50:50); (2) the optimal dissolution temperature and time for the valuable metals were found to be 60°C and 30 min, respectively; (3) the ideal PDP scrap powder to acid solution ratio was found to be 1:10. The proposed method was applied to the recovery of magnesium, silver, and indium with satisfactory results.

The results of studies carried out on the heat treated AZ61 magnesium alloy extruded by two methods, i.e. direct extrusion and continuous rotary extrusion, were presented. As part of the work, parameters of the T6 heat treatment were proposed and aging curves were plotted. The solution heat treatment process was accompanied by the grain growth. During artificial aging, due to the decomposition of solid solution, the β-Mg17Al12 phase was precipitated from the supersaturated α solution. It precipitated in a coagulated form at the grain boundaries and in the form of fine-dispersed plates arranged in a preferred direction relative to the grain orientation. Rods obtained by continuous rotary extrusion, unlike those made by the direct process, exhibited a low degree of texturing and lack of anisotropic properties.

In this study, we have developed the manufacturing technology for high strength gray cast irons by using the spent permanent magnet scraps. The cast specimen inoculated by using a spent magnet scraps showed the excellent tensile strength up to 306MPa. This tensile strength value is 50MPa higher than that of the specimen cast without inoculation, and is similar to that of the specimen inoculated by using the expensive misch-metal. These superior mechanical properties are attributed to complex sulfides created during solidification that promote the formation and growth of Type-A graphite. It is therefore concluded that spent magnets scrap can provide an efficient and cost-effective inoculation agent for the fabrication of high-performance gray cast iron.

The effect of additives on the densification behavior and mechanical properties of pure and additive (Zr, B and Mg)-added silica ceramics were investigated for their application to the matrix phase of a silica fiber reinforced silica (SiO2 /SiO2f ) composite. The additives affected the rate of densification and crystallization (or transformation) of the amorphous silica. Among the compositions, pure silica ceramics sintered at 900°C for 1h showed the maximum flexural strength. Based on the results, SiO2 /SiO2f was fabricated by a repeated vacuum-assisted infiltration method followed by the heat treatment at 900°C for 1h. The relative density of the composite was 78.2% with a flexural strength of 22.4 MPa. Fractography revealed that the composite was damaged by strong bonding at the fiber/matrix interface and the fracture of fiber.

Nanostructured thermoelectric materials receiving great attention for its high thermoelectric performance. In this research, nanostructured n-type Bi2 Te2.7 Se0.3 alloys have prepared using high energy ball milling and followed by spark plasma sintering. Also, we have varied ball milling time to investigate milling time parameter on the thermoelectric properties of n-type Bi2 Te2.7 Se0.3 powder. The powders were discrete at 10 min milling and later particles tend to agglomerate at higher milling time due to cold welding. The bulk fracture surface display multi-scale grains where small grains intersperse in between large grains. The maximum Seebeck coefficient value was obtained at 20-min milling time due to their lower carrier density. The κ values were decreased with increasing milling time due to the decreasing trend observed in their κL values. The highest ZT of 0.7 at 350 K was observed for 30-min milling time which was ascribed to its lower thermal conductivity. The Vickers hardness values also greatly improved due to their fine microstructure.

Opis:
Development of the Digital Material Representation (DMR) model, based on 3D reconstruction algorithm and serial sectioning, is the main goal of the present paper. Details on the serial sectioning and image processing algorithms are presented first. Serial sectioning is realized on the basis of light microscopy (LM). Then concept of 3D reconstruction and developed algorithms are presented. Two approaches, based on shape coefficients and the flood fill algorithms, are developed to identify corresponding features on subsequent 2D images. Then, the interpolation algorithm to reconstruct 3D volume between 2D images is presented. Finally, obtained 3D model is an input for finite element mesh generation software for subsequent finite element calculations.

Opis:
Most nickel is produced as Ferro-Nickel through a smelting process from Ni-bearing ore. However, these days, there have been some problems in nickel production due to exhaustion and the low-grade of Ni-bearing ore. Moreover, the smelting process results in a large amount of wastewater, slag and environmental risk. Therefore, in this research, spent Ni-Cd batteries were used as a base material instead of Ni-bearing ore for the recovery of Fe-Ni alloy through a direct reduction process. Spent Ni-Cd batteries contain 24wt% Ni, 18.5wt% Cd, 12.1% C and 27.5wt% polymers such as KOH. For pre-treatment, Cd was vaporized at 1024K. In order to evaluate the reduction conditions of nickel oxide and iron oxide, pre-treated spent Ni-Cd batteries were experimented on under various temperatures, gas-atmospheres and crucible materials. By a series of process, alloys containing 75 wt% Ni and 20 wt% Fe were produced. From the results, the reduction mechanism of nickel oxide and iron oxide were investigated.

To establish the coating conditions for 57 Co, non-radioactive Co ions are dissolved in an acid solution and electroplated on to a rhodium plate. The thermal diffusion of electroplated Co into a rhodium matrix was studied to apply a 57 Co Mössbauer source. The procedure to form a Co deposited onto Rh foil was established using two different electroplating baths: the acid-based buffer (pH 3) containing boric acid, sodium chloride, and saccharin, and the alkaline-based buffer (pH 10) containing hydrazine hydrate and ammonium citrate. The influence of different annealing conditions was investigated. From the results, the best diffusion degree of electrodeposited Co onto the rhodium matrix was obtained in an annealing process performed at 1100°C for 3 h in vacuum over 10-5 hPa.

In this research, effect of the various mechanical milling process on morphology and microstructural changes of nano and micron Al-powders was studied. The milling of Al-powders was performed by both high energy and low energy ball milling process. The influence of milling (pulverizing) energy on the structural changes of Al-powders was studied. Al-nanoparticles were agglomerated during the MA and its size was increased with increasing milling while micron Al-powder gets flattened shape during high energy ball milling due to severe plastic deformation. Meanwhile, structural evolution during high energy ball milling of the nano powder occurred faster than that of the micron powder. A slight shift in the position of X-ray diffraction peaks was observed in nano Al-powders but it was un-altered in macro Al-powders. The variation in lattice parameters was observed only for nano Al powders during the high energy ball milling due to lattice distortion.

In this work, p-type Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 alloys were fabricated by high-energy ball milling (MA) and spark plasma sintering. Different revolutions per minute (RPM)s were used in the MA process, and their effect on microstructure, and thermoelectric properties of p-type Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 were systematically investigated. The crystal structure of milled powders and sintered samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction. All the powders exhibited the same morphology albeit with slight differences find at 1100 RPM conditions. A slight grain size refinement was observed on the fracture surfaces from 500 to 1100 RPM specimens. The temperature dependence of Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and power factors were measured as a function of temperature with different RPM conditions. The power factor shows almost same (~3.5 W/mK2 at RT) for all samples due to unchanged Seebeck and electrical conductivity values. The peak ZT of 1.07 at 375K is obtained for 1100 RPM specimen due to low thermal conductivity.

In this paper, aluminium alloy of grade ADC-12 was considered as a base metal and chromium carbide (Cr3C2) particles were reinforced through friction stir process. A detailed analysis of mechanical property and metallurgical characterization studies were performed to evaluate the surface composite. Remarkable changes were observed in the developed composite due to the mechanical force produced by the stir tool with an increase in hardness. The metallurgical investigation infers that the presence of silica in ADC-12 alloys has undergone mechanical fracture and long needle structure changed to reduced size. On the other hand, at higher tool rotational speed, the uniform distribution of hard particles was confirmed through SEM micrographs. Thus the modified surface composite has produced good mechanical property with high metallurgical qualities.
