Opis:
The paper presents results of the wear tests of chain wheels made of austempered ductile iron with various content of residual austenite. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the impact of the dynamic surface treatment (shot peening) on wear properties of surface layers of the chain wheels tested that were subjected to the action of quartz abrasive. Apart from determining the value of the abrasive wear, examinations of the magnetic phase content in the microstructure were carried out and plots of hardness of the surface layer as a function of the distance from the surface and microstructure of the materials were prepared. Based on the results, the following was found: an increase in the abrasive wear and a reduction in the hardness of the surface layer of chain wheels subjected to shot peening, as well as reduction of susceptibility to negative action of the shot for cast irons with the structure of upper ausferrite.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of wear tests of shot-peened and not shot-peened cast steels used in the mining machinery industry, in particular in the construction of chain drums for armoured face conveyors. Wear tests were carried out in the conditions corresponding to the real operating conditions of armoured face conveyors during drifting work in rocks such as sandstone. The operating factors subjected to the analyses included the presence of quartz abrasive and the impact of external dynamic forces. On the basis of the wear tests as well as the microhardness and microstructure examinations performed, it has been found that the action of an additional dynamic force has a synergistic impact on the process of abrasive wear in loose quartz abrasive. It has been further found that the value of abrasive wear of chain wheels operated in the conditions of a combined action of abrasive and a dynamic force depends on whether the area of mating of wheels with the chain was shot-peened or not before the wear tests – an increase in the abrasive wear was observed for the wheels made of cast steel subjected to shot peening in the area of mating with the chain. Lower resistance to abrasive wear of the cast steels subjected to shot peening before the wear tests could result from the formation of cracks in the surface layer caused by the action of shot.

The paper presents the results of the wear tests of alloyed austempered ductile iron performed on a specially designed test rig simulating real operating conditions for chain wheels which were selected for testing due to their complex rolling and sliding form of contact between elements. The chain wheels subjected to tests were operated with the use of loose quartz abrasive and without it. The studies involved the determination of strength and plastic properties, hardness distributions, microstructure and linear wear of the ADI in question considered as a function of the austempering temperature. Based on the results obtained, the following was found: phase transition of austempered ductile iron can take place for combinations typical of industrial applications, a non-linear increase in the wear as a function of the austempering temperature occurs, an increase in the hardness of all the analysed types of ADI takes place during the operation without the presence of abrasive, the phase transition of austenite into martensite in ADI with a lower content of austenite requires higher loads as compared with cast iron containing 40% of austenite.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań zużyciowych stopowych żeliw ausferrytycznych na specjalnie skonstruowanym stanowisku badawczym imitujacym rzeczywiste warunki eksploatacyjne kół łancuchowych, wybranych do testów z uwagi na złożoną toczno-ślizgowa postać współpracy elementów. Testowane koła łańcuchowe były eksploatowane z udziałem luźnego ścierniwa kwarcowego i bez niego. W ramach badań wyznaczono właściwości wytrzymałościowe i plastyczne, rozkłady twardości, mikrostrukture i zużycie liniowe rozpatrywanych żeliw ADI w funkcji temperatury ausferytyzacji.

The study presents results of the second part of wear tests of austempered ductile irons on a specially designed test rig that allows simulating the real operating conditions of chain wheels. The chain wheels subjected to testing were operated in conditions characterized by combined action of loose quartz abrasive and an external dynamic force. The studies involved the determination of the hardness, microstructure and linear wear of the ADIs in question considered as a function of the austempering temperature and the austenite content. Based on the results obtained, the following was observed: a decrease in the wear as a function of the austempering temperature and thus in the content of austenite in ADIs; a slight deformation of graphite after completing the wear test involving external dynamic forces; a negative linear dependence between the linear wear and the impact resistance. It was found that the increased wear of cast irons with a lower content of austenite may be caused by the propagation of cracks initiated by damage to graphite nodules, while in the conditions characterized by combined action of abrasive wear and dynamic load the cast irons with a higher content of austenite and higher impact resistance have better wear properties.
W pracy przedstawiono rezultaty drugiej częćci badań zużyciowych stopowych żeliw ausferytycznych na specjalnie skonstruowanym stanowisku badawczym imitującym rzeczywiste warunki eksploatacyjne kół łancuchowych. W ramach badań wyznaczono przebiegi twardości, mikrostrukturę i zużycie liniowe rozpatrywanych żeliw ADI w funkcji temperatury ausferytyzacji i zawartości austenitu.

The paper presents the results of wear tests obtained for 4 groups of materials: surface-hardened alloy steels and alloy cast steels for structural applications, hard-wearing surface-hardened alloy cast steels, and austempered alloy cast irons. The wear tests have been performed on a specially designed test rig that allows reproducing the real operating conditions of chain wheels, including the rolling and sliding form of contact between elements. The chain wheels subjected to tests were operated with the use of loose quartz abrasive. This study presents results of measurements of material parameters, micro-structure of a surface subject to wear, as well as the linear wear determined for the materials considered. Based on the results, the following was found: the best wear properties were obtained for surface-hardened alloy steels and wear surface; strengthening of the ADI surface took place - most probably as a result of transformation of austenite into martensite; the uniformity of the structure of the materials affects the surface wear process. The study also indicated a significant degree of graphite deformation in ADI characterized by the upper ausferritic structure and its oblique orientation in relation to the surface, which resulted in a facilitated degradation of the surface caused by the quartz abrasive.

Opis:
The purpose of this study was to determine experimentally the wear properties of 5 groups of iron-based alloys used in the mining and transport machines exposed to the action of a hard abrasive material. The groups of materials to be examined included austempered ductile irons (ADI), steels and cast steel designed for quenching and tempering and for surface hardening, hard-wearing hardened steels and structural steels. The wear tests were carried out on a disc-on-disc test rig. The test samples were examined under conditions of sliding mating, while the leading destructive process was microcutting of the surface with loose corundum grain. The loss of mass of the examined samples was measured as a parameter characterizing the wear. Base on it, other wear coefficients were determined, for example the volume loss, the intensity of wear and the wear rate. The volume loss values determined were presented as a function of the strength and the initial hardness. Based on the results obtained, it was found that the hardened steel and ADI had comparable wear properties, while the ADI surface was strengthened probably as a result of the transition of austenite into martensite and the impact of the deformation of the graphite contained in ADI on the abrasive wear of the surface.

Opis:
The paper presents results of a two-stage study on the tribocorrosive wear of ADI alloy cast iron containing Ni and Cu. In the first stage of the wear tests with use test rig type pin-on-plate, there were determined the parameters of the process of tribocorrosion of the ADI cast iron in 3.5% NaCl solution. In the second stage, the tests were carried out on a test rig simulating real operating conditions of chain wheels used in armoured face conveyors. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the impact of the combined action of corrosive agents (water and NaCl) and quartz abrasive on the wear of the wheels tested. As part of the test, the abrasive wear in the presence of the abrasive material alone and in the presence of a mixture of the abrasive material, water and NaCl was determined. The microstructure and the hardness of the surface layer as a function of the distance from the surface were also determined. During the study it has been found that regardless of the type of test there is a synergy between the effects of corrosion and friction which led to an increase of the resulting wear by 30%.

Opis:
In the case of mining machines, tribocorrosion damage is often observed. This type of consumption is caused by the joint action of mining environment factors such as abrasive and water. The search for methods to counteract tribocorrosion is of great practical importance, but it must be combined with the knowledge of methods of forecasting the value of wear. This paper presents a model of prediction of tribocorrosive wear adapted to corrodible materials – ADI containing Ni and Cu, with the strength class of 800 MPa – and results of a two-stage study on the tribocorrosive wear. Presented results indicate a distinct effect of synergy between friction and corrosion in the total wear of ADI. The tribocorrosion tests confimed the adequacy of the model developed for the ADI.

Ni3Al coatings were obtained on AISI 321 steel samples by air plasma spraying system. The behavior of heat treatment on intermetallic coatings were evaluated after exposure at various temperatures i.e. 500ºC to 800ºC. The stay time in this regard was varied from 10 to 100 hours. The coatings were then characterized by X-Ray diffraction analysis, optical and scanning electron microscopy, eddy current measurements and stress analysis. It was observed that the formation of NiO increases drastically with time and temperature. The hardness of the coating increases with the formation of NiO. It was noted that the residual stresses can be correlated with the formation of NiO. Further, the development of residual stresses can be monitored by a non-destructive technique i.e. eddy current method.

The grain boundary wetting phase transition in an industrial EZ33A cast alloy is studied. 12% of the grain boundaries are completely wetted at the temperature slightly higher than the eutectic transformation temperature (530°C). The fraction of wetted grain boundaries increases with temperature, reaches a maximum of 85% at 570°C, and does not change further until the alloy melts. In the as-cast state, the alloy has low ductile properties at the ambient temperature. The microstructure in the as-cast state corresponds to the wetting state at about 560°C, which indicates that the cooling rate in casting is almost equal to that in quenching. The volume and the surface fraction of the second phase and the hardness measured at the least wetted state of samples point toits good machinability. The wetting data are used to suggest a sequence of heat treatment and machining for processing EZ33A alloy parts.

The scope of this paper is to understand the effect of multiple pass of the tool during friction stir welding process of Al-17Si alloy and evaluate its microstructure and tensile strength. The rotational speed of 900 rpm with three different feed rates (50, 100, 150 mm/min) was selected for this process. The weld gap seen below the tool tip has been reduced drastically during the multiple pass and after the third pass the weld gap was invisible. With the increase in the feed rate, the adhesion was reduced between the tool pin circumference and diffused material, hence a small increase in the weld gap was observed. The substantiate changes in the microstructure was observed due to the severe formation of the metal during low feed rate. With the increase in the feed rate, some coarse grains were observed near and below the tool pin. The tensile strength during the multiple pass of the tool was studied and found better for lower feed rate. Further, the variation of the tool speeds (600, 900 and 1200 rpm) for constant feed rates of 100 mm/min were discussed. The more heat input improves plunging depth thereby reduces weld gap, but for higher heat input (tool rotation: 1200 rpm; feed rate: 100mm/min) increase in weld gaps was seen. The tensile properties for all the cases were discussed. The diffusion process, friction force and relative velocity pertaining to this process were highlighted finally.
