Opis:
Temperature gradient zone melting (TGZM) method was used to obtain bulk Si continuously for the efficient separation and purification of primary Si from the Si-Al alloy in this work. The effects of alloy thickness, temperature gradient and holding time in TGZM purification technology were investigated. Finally, the continuous growth of bulk Si without eutectic inclusions was obtained. The results showed that the growth rate of bulk Si was independent of the liquid zone thickness. When the temperature gradient was changed from 2.48 K/mm to 3.97 K/mm, the growth rate of bulk Si was enhanced from 7.9×10-5 mm/s to 2.47×10-4 mm/s, which was increased by about 3 times. The bulk Si could grow continuously and the growth rate was decreased with the increase of holding time from 1 h to 5 h. Meanwhile, low refining temperature was beneficial to the removal of impurities. With a precipitation temperature of 1460 K and a temperature gradient of 2.48 K/mm, the removal rates of Fe, P and B were 99.8%, 94.0% and 63.6%, respectively.

Opis:
Fatigue properties of casting Al-alloys are very sensitive to the microstructural features of the alloy (e.g. size and morphology of the eutectic Si, secondary dendrite arm spacing – SDAS, intermetallics, grain size) and casting defects (porosity and oxides). Experimental study of bending fatigue properties of secondary cast alloys have shown that: fatigue tests up to 106-107cycles show mean fatigue limits of approx. 30-49 MPa (AlSi9Cu3 alloy – as cast state), approx. 65-76 MPa (AlSi9Cu3 alloy after solution treatment) and 60-70 MPa (self-hardened AlZn10Si8Mg alloy) in the tested casting condition; whenever large pore is present at or near the specimen’s surface, it will be the dominant cause of fatigue crack initiation; in the absence of large casting defects, the influence of microstructural features (Si morphology; Fe-rich phases) on the fatigue performance becomes more pronounced.

In this study, we have focused on the role of silicon morphology on the hardness of eutectic Al–12 wt.% Si–0.5 wt.% Sb alloy solidified at different cooling rates. The alloys were produced by using induction melting, arc-remelting and melt-spinning techniques. The cooling rates of the alloys were determined as 0.5, 60 and ~105°C.s-1 for induction-melted, arc-remelted and meltspun alloy. The experimental results show that as the cooling rate increased the coarse silicon phase was substantially refined and its morphology altered from sharp need-like to round shape. Two exothermic peaks, attributed to precipitation and coarsening of silicon from supersaturated α-Al, were observed in the DSC curve of MS alloy. Vicker’s hardness of melt-spun alloy was found two times higher than those of IMed and ARed alloys. The lowest hardness of induction-melted alloy was ascribed to the lamellar morphology of silicon, yielding decohesive rupture. This result was confirmed by finite element analyzing.

Opis:
We have utilized a phase-field model to investigate the evolution of eutectic silicon in Al-Si alloy. The interfacial fluctuations are included into a phase-field model of two-phase solidification, as stochastic noise terms and their dominant role in eutectic silicon formation is discussed. We have observed that silicon spherical particles nucleate on the foundation of primary aluminum phase and their nucleation continues on concentric rings, through the Al matrix. The nucleation of silicon particles is attributed to the inclusion of fluctuations into the phase-field equations. The simulation results have shown needle-like, fish-bone like and flakes of silicon phase by adjusting the noise coefficients to larger values. Moreover, the role of primary Al phase on nucleation of silicon particles in Al-Si alloy is elaborated. We have found that the addition of fluctuations plays the role of modifiers in our simulations and is essential for phase-field modeling of eutectic growth in Al-Si system. The simulated finger-like Al phases and spherical Si particles are very similar to those of experimental eutectic growth in modified Al-Si alloy.

Opis:
The study aims to investigate the effect of semisolid structure and strontium (Sr) addition on the wear behavior of hypoeutectic Al-Si alloy. Semisolid hypoeutectic Al-Si alloy was prepared using cooling slope casting with addition of 0 to 0.93 wt.% Sr. Microstructural study was done using an optical microscope. Vicker microhardness and pin on disc tribometer were used for microhardness and wear testing. When compared to conventional casting, the microhardness of the semisolid hypoeutectic Al-Si alloy improved by 9.8%. Sr addition at 0.43 wt.% resulted in a refined eutectic structure with a 17% increase in hardness over conventional casting. The globular structure α-Al formed during semisolid casting reduced porosity, and the addition of Sr refined the eutectic silicon into a fine fibrous structure that is tightly bound with the Al matrix. These are the primary factors that contribute to the high wear resistance in modified-Sr semisolid alloys.

Unmodified AlSi20 alloy were casted at the research station, allowing for sequential multipoint cooling using a dedicated computer- controlled program. This method allows for the formation of the microstructure of hypereutectic AlSi20 alloy and also increases hardness. Primary silicon dendrites were found in the microstructure of cooled samples. Based on these dendrites, the formation of primary silicon particles is explained. Cooling of casting die with a water mist stream causes changes in solidification, which leads to expansion of the boundary layer with columnar crystals and shrinkage of the core zone with equiaxed crystals. It also causes more regular hardness distribution around pre-eutectic Si crystals, which can lead to tensile strength and machinability improvement.

Trace elements Co, Cr were added to investigate their influence on the microstructure and physical properties of Al-Si extruded alloy. The Co, Cr elements were randomly distributed in the matrix, forms intermetallic phase and their existence wereconfirmed by XRD, EDS and SEM analysis. With addition of trace elements, the microstructure was modified, Si particle size was reduced and the growth rate of β-(Al5 FeSi) phase limited. Compared to parent alloy, hardness and tensile strength were enhanced while the linear coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) was significantly reduced by 42.4% and 16.05% with Co and Cr addition respectively. It is considered that the low CTE occurs with addition of Co was due to the formation of intermetallic compound having low coefficient of thermal expansion. The results suggested that Co acts as an effective element in improving the mechanical properties of Al-Si alloy.

The tensile properties and microstructures of ZL114A alloy component with a complex shape are investigated at room temperature and 200°C, using the tensile tests, scanning electron microscopy and electron backscattering diffraction. Both thin wall and thick structure exhibit excellent properties, of which max ultimate tensile strength and elongation at break reach 314 MPa and 2.5% at room temperature, respectively. The ultimate tensile strengths of thin wall are 40 MPa and 25 MPa greater than those of thick structure at room temperature and 200°C, respectively. Moreover, the eutectic Si phases of thin wall exhibit a predominantly spherical morphology while of the morphology of thick structure are rod-like, resulting in the different mechanical properties between thin wall and thick structure. The fracture morphologies of thin wall and thick structure are studied to explain the difference in performance between thin wall and thick structure.

In this study by semisolid processing of Al-6%Si alloy, it has been found that small additions of Ti-6Al-4V shift the liquidus temperature up and the recalescence decreases. The nucleation event takes place at higher temperatures. Furthermore, the rate at which growth temperature increases is less than that of nucleation temperature and therefore more nuclei form with less potential for growth. In this processing refiner increases the α-Al percentage and reduces globule size. Improvement of mechanical property and microstructure characterization are the main advantages of this study.

Al-Si alloy was a model material. The factors affecting the fluidity varied in following ranges: Si content 5 wt.% – 12 wt.%, Fe content 0.15 wt.% – 0.3 wt. %, the pouring temperature 605°C-830°C, and the pouring speed 100 g · s-1 – 400 g · s-1. The software NovaFlow&Solid was used for simulations. The statistically significant difference between the value of fluidity calculated by the equation and obtained by experiment was not found. This design simplifies the calculation of the capability of the measurement process of the fluidity with full replacement of experiments by calculation, using regression equation.

Requirements, placed by design engineers in relation to special castings, applied to gas filled high voltage switchgears PN-EN 50052:2002, are still higher. These demands concern to quality of machined sealing surface, assurance of castings leaktightness for a long time of operating and suitable strength during special bursting test. Manufacturer of such castings is obliged to use, among other things, high quality new alloy and guarantee proper metallurgical treatment and liquid alloy control during metal melting and preparation, before filling the moulds. Generally new alloy testing is made by its producer. Receiver checks testing results, according to effective procedures, during incoming inspection. Following tests are carried out during liquid alloy preparation (melting, degassing and inoculation): chemical composition test, thermal analysis and density index. To confirm that the process of liquid alloy control is correct comparative examinations were made, using new installations of companies such as Foseco, ALSPEK* H, and metallographic examinations of special samples with computer picture analysis. All examinations were made for one heat of AlSi7Mg0.3 alloy (AC - 42100 according to PN-EN 1706:2011), at different stages of liquid metal preparation, such as: in melting furnace, after reladle, after refining and just before filling sand moulds. Additionally alloy purity index, hydrogen content in liquid alloy, porosity degree were determined and also analysis of inclusions was made. Examinations with applying modern devices confirmed, that the process of preparation and testing of liquid alloy, intended to produce castings of special requirements, is correct. All applied refining treatments improved liquid alloy quality, eliminated number of inclusions, porosity and reduced hydrogen content. It is a base for stating that high quality alloy, correctly prepared and controlled before filling sand mould was used. New Foseco devices can be used in foundries to verify their processes of alloy preparation and alloy purity evaluation on different stages, especially producing castings of high technical requirements. The thixotropy phenomenon is strongly connected with the change of viscosity in time, while the of Navier-Stockes equation. The micro- and macroscale models are coupled using CAFE approach.

The scope of this work is to investigate the precipitation of two Al-Mg-Si alloys with and without Cu and excess Si by using the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), transmission electron microscopic (TEM), Vickers hardness measurement and X-ray diffraction. The analysis of the DSC curves found that the excess Si accelerate the precipitation and the alloy contain the excess Si and small addition of copper has higher aging-hardness than that of free alloy (without excess Si and Cu) at the same heat treatment condition. The sufficient holding time for the precipitation of the β'' phase was estimated to be 6 hours for the alloy aged at 100°C and 10 hours for the alloy aged at 180°C. The low Copper containing Al-Mg-Si alloy gives rise to the forming a finer distribution of β (Mg2Si) precipitates which increases the hardness of the alloy. In order to know more about the precipitation reactions, concern the peaks on the DSC curve transmission electron microscopy observation were made on samples annealed at temperatures (250°C, 290°C and 400°C) just above the corresponding peaks of the three phases β'', β' and β respectively.

The addition of iron and velocity of casting increase the strength of aluminium wire rod in as-cast condition while the electrical conductivity drop acceptable. Moreover, the laboratory wire drawing process causes work-hardening wires and increase drawing tension as a result of fragmentation of structure and growth of grain boundaries. It has been shown that iron is beneficial for mechanical and technological properties of aluminium.
