Opis:
Recent interest in the effects of streambed and near-subsurface (benthic and hyporheic) processes on stream ecosystems has motivated study of the hydrodynamics of stream-subsurface interactions. Hydrodynamic transport places an important control on the delivery of reactive species such as contaminants and ecologically-relevant substances such as nutrients to the benthic and hyporheic zones. Conversely, biological pro-cesses such as biofilm growth and physicochemical processes such as colloid deposition can alter the transport environment within sedimentary systems. Multiple feedbacks between biological, chemical, and transport processes make these interfacial sedimentary environments very com-plex. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the feedbacks be-tween hydrodynamic stream-subsurface exchange, biofilm development, and fine particle deposition. These studies demonstrate that a compre-hensive interdisciplinary approach is required to assess even the most basic dynamic processes in these systems, such as the evolution of in-terfacial fluxes over time. We suggest that it is useful to consider these processes to be biophysicochemical in nature. That is, in such complex environmental systems, it is misleading to attempt to consider processes in isolation; rather, understanding of system dynamics can only come from an integrated approach that considers feedbacks among and be-tween biological, physical, and chemical processes.

Opis:
The paper presents the main theoretical concepts related to methods of calculating the erosion rate for sandy dunes on natural coasts, namely, the beach equilibrium profile and incident waves. To illustrate calculations of dune erosion in the vicinity of the Coastal Research Station (CRS) in Lubiatowo, the Xbeach model (an incident wave model) was used. The calculations were carried out for hydrological and hydrodynamic conditions that accompanied Hurricane Ksawery (December 6–8, 2013). The results of the calculations were compared with the measured data. A satisfactory agreement was obtained between the predicted and measured results.

In the paper a quasi-analytical formula for moisture increase along the wetting front during infiltration into a soil column is presented. Based on the formula, the moisture distribution along the column of six soils available in the literature was calculated. Then their verification was carried out using empirical data and the results obtained from other type models. The impact on the front shape of such factors as recharge rate, initial moisture content and direction of seepage against the vertical was checked.

Opis:
A two-dimensional numerical model was used for a simulation of vertical average longshore currents generated by both wind friction and wind-wave action in the nearshore zone. The modelling domain includes the southern part of the Baltic Proper (all boundaries were closed). Wind, uniform in space and varying in time, was the only forcing in the model. The correlation coefficient higher than 0.8 was obtained by model calibration versus the field measurements of currents conducted at the Lubiatowo field station (southern Baltic) during about 1.5 months in 2006. Comparative simulations of total currents including both wind-induced drift and wave components, and of total currents including only a wind-induced drift component, showed that the input of the drift component into currents in the nearshore zone is greater than commonly believed. Wind-induced drift strongly dominates outside the zone of wave transformation, and its input into the total resulting currents remains noticeable even in a zone between the shoreline and the depth of the first wave breaking. Thus, wind-induced drift constitutes up to 50% of the resulting longshore currents for longshore winds and no less than 20% of the longshore component of currents for winds at 45 degrees to the longshore direction.

Opis:
An analysis was carried out to determine the influence of landslide process at a few meters depth under the dune surface on the rebuilding of the dune. In the first step, calculations were done using the XBEACH model to determine seabed rebuilding as well as shore and dune undercutting for the assumed hydrologic and hydrodynamic conditions. Next, the obtained tachymetric profile of the dune and beach was fed into the FLAC2D program, and calculations of stress distribution, displacements and stability conditions were made. In this way, landslide movement was identified. The theoretical investigations clearly prove that waves attacking the dune not only cause surface erosion, but also trigger a landslide within the dune mass to a maximum depth of about 5 m. It results in a lowering of the dune crown by about 0:6 0:7 m. Numerical models such as XBEACH, SBEACH or CSHORE do not take into account landslide occurrence, and thus underestimate dune erosion.

A theoretical description of reactive solute transport in a network of stream channels is derived by convoluting unit solutions based on a physical representation of transport and topographical information of the distributions of solute load as well as pathways. The theory is applied to a generic analysis of the phosphate export in Morsa watershed due to the load from 620 individual households with a local wastewater treatment. Essential factors for the phosphate export is filtering of the water in stream-bed sediments through a distribution of hyporheic flow paths of various lengths. This generic study indicates that a significant portion of phosphate is retained in the hyporheic zones for a long time. The 90\% recovery time following a hypothetical remediation action in the households is expected to be in the order of one decade.

The paper presents results of a study of near-bottom currents, lithology and morphodynamics on the shore-zone of the Vistula Spit in Russia and on the western shore of the Sambian Peninsula. The measurements were conducted in 1991 and during the period of 2005-2009. The study involves the analysis of the synchronous and statistical parameters of the currents together with wind, grain-size and sorting coefficient distributions for the deposits of the beach and underwater slope, and also the analysis of the morphology and morphodynamics along the east coast of the Gulf of Gdańsk. It has been shown that under conditions of an acute angle between the seaward wind vector and the coastline the strongest and the most stable longshore currents are formed. An increase of the angle leads to a decrease of velocity and stability of these currents. Under conditions of the wind normal to the shore (90°) in the sector of the curved coast Yantarny - Baltiysk (west wind), convergence of the currents is observed. The assessments of annual capacities of the longshore sediment transport for the coastal segment at the Sambian Peninsula and the deformation volumes on the underwater slope at Baltiysk are summarized. A hypothesis is proposed that the sector of 5-15 km north of Baltiysk under the existing wind-wave conditions is the zone of convergence and the discharge-resulting sediment transport. The assumption of the prevalence of migratory and whirl circulations along the shore zone of Vistula Spit is put forward. It is noticed that entrance moles of Baltiysk considerably impact on parameters of the currents and flow of deposits along the coastline at the length of 3-4 km.

Opis:
Heterogeneity of granular materials triggers shear zone formation. In the paper, the FE-analysis of the effect of the material heterogeneity on the formation of a spontaneous shear zone inside of granular materials during a plane strain compression test is presented. The numerical calculations are performed with a finite element method on the basis of a hypoplastic constitutive law extended by polar quantities: rotations, curvatures and couple stresses. A mean grain diameter is used as a characteristic length. The constitutive law takes into account the effect of pressure, void ratio, direction of deformation rate and mean grain diameter on the behaviour of granular bodies. The heterogeneity in the granular body is assumed in the form of spots with a different initial void ratio. The spots are single or distributed randomly and stochastically with an exponential probability function. The single spots are distributed sparsely and densely in an initially dense and loose granular specimen. Special attention is focused on the effect of heterogeneity on the onset of shear localization and its thickness at residual state.

A new mathematical model for prediction of a two-dimensional wave motion in shallow water is presented herein. It can be applied to investigate shoaling, diffraction, refraction, breaking, bottom friction and wave run-up on a beach, as well as mass transport and orbital motion. The model also includes an oblique wave approach to the shore and irregular bottom topography. Such engineering constructions as seawalls, breakwaters and groins are simulated numerically. Simple results of computations, shown in graphic form, indicate possible practical applications of the model.

The paper focuses on the numerical analysis of the effect of texturial anisotropy on shear localization in cohesionless granular materials. For simulation of the mechanical behaviour of a granular material during a monotonous deformation path, a hypoplastic constitutive model was used. To take into account a characteristic length of micro-structure, the constitutive model was extended by micro-polar terms. To take into account texturial effects, the granular hardness was modified. The calculations were carried out with a sand specimen during plane strain compression under constant lateral pressure. A stochastic and uniform distribution of the initial void ratio in the granular specimen was assumed. In addition, shear localization for two different uniform initial void ratios was investigated.

Various types of utilization, conflicting interests and environmental problems call for coastal water management as part of an integrated coastal zone management. This is especially necessary for the Oder (Odra) estuary at the German/Polish border. The river Oder causes severe, ongoing and large scale eutrophication, which limits the ecological and economic value of its adjacent coastal ecosystems. Simulation models are an important tool with which to tackle these practical problems and support management. We present a general concept of a decision support system with an integration of sub-models. Two types of models for long-term water quality forecasts and scenario simulations, as well as short-term prediction of water pollution are available at present. Spatial human-pathogenic virus transport and decay simulations are used as an example to demonstrate their practical use.

Nearshore bed variations of the southem Baltic shore were investigated with the aim of detecting co-variability among bed forms of a multi-bar system. The studied area is located at IBW PAN Coastal Research Station at Lubiatowo. The beach consists of fine sand of median grain equal to 0.22 mm, is mildly sloping and boasts multiple (usually 4) bars, which is typical for the coast in the southem Baltic. Data on bed topography were collected along 27 lines, equally spanned every 100 m, since 1987 to 1999, usually twice a year. Fairly high alongshore bed homogeneity made it possible to choose one representative profile for which the CCA method was employed. The method demonstrated considerable potential for detecting co-variability of bed features in the nearshore zone. The results show that some 80% of variability in the region of the offshore slope of the outermost bar can be attributed to variations of Dean equilibrium profiles. The portion of variability of the two innermost bars due to variations of equilibrium profiles equals 40%. Horizontal counter-movements of outer and inner bars can be responsible for same 20%. The remaining 40% should be related to highly variable short time scale phenomena like breakers and wave driven currents in the vicinity of inner bars.
