Opis:
In turbulent flows, several kinds of vortices and their structures are developed. After physical summation al velocities created by them, they intertwine, and the picture obtained from their measurement chronograms is mostly chaotic. Consequently, these structures become masked. It is therefore very difficult to investigate them and despite many studies performed so far, they have not been sufficiently explored. Favorable conditions for investigations of velocity measurement chronograms occurred when sufficient long intervals were observed, in which the above mentioned masking is minimal. In such intervals, the investigation of turbulent vortices and their structures becomes possible, and it has been performed to some degree. The results of these investigations of the compound channel were already discussed in two previously published articles. The first describes all vortices and their structures in the whole water flow of the compound channel. The second contains a detailed analysis of vortices and their structures in the central vertical of the main channel. This article, discuss investigations of coherent structures formed in the floodplain.

Opis:
The paper deals with the mechanics of sand with some admixtures of fines. The basic question is whether such admixtures are liquefiable or not. Experimental results show that admixtures of fines do not essentially influence the liquefaction susceptibility of granular soils. The original experimental investigations support this conclusion.

Opis:
A small-scale model experiment on the pull-out resistance of suction caissons is described. The pull-out force and suction developed within the caisson in the extraction process were recorded during the experiment. A simple breakout model, together with an elementary static formulae, is applied to predict the results obtained experimentally. There is a reasonably good agreement between the experimental results and predictions. An extensive discussion of the approach applied is included. The analysis presented in this paper is original, as it differs from other approaches mentioned in this paper, and leads to acceptable predictions. At the end, the results are also compared with another approach for predicting the capacity of suction caissons.

Opis:
Asimple approach to estimate sidewall friction in reinforced soil model experiments conducted in parallel-sided test boxes with unlubricated walls is proposed. Analytical solutions are developed for reinforced soil slopes and retaining walls subjected to self-weight or external loading. It turns out that the frictional effect depends on the shape of the failure zone and the value of friction coefficient between soil and a sidewall material. The theoretical predictions were verified in laboratory experiments in a test box with lubricated and unlubricated sidewalls. It was shown that the method can be used to estimate sidewall friction not only under failure conditions, but also under all stages of surcharging prior to failure.

turbulent structure
Opis:
In spite of many investigations performed on turbulent flows, their structure has not yet been sufficiently explored. The difficulty is that, when a detailed picture of the velocity field is necessary, the widely employed Particle Image Velocity (PIV) method can provide photos covering only a short interval of flow, which cannot include the largest structures of turbulent flow, and consequently these structures cannot be investigated. In this study, the author tried to obtain necessary data about the processes occurring in the flow by analyzing instantaneous velocity measurements carried out by 3D means. A measurement at the points of a low cross-section takes at least 1 minute. During this time all vortex structures, including the largest, occur repeatedly many times and can be studied. The analysis of such measurements was the aim of this article. The process of the generation of vortices at the bottom and their further development, including the conditions of the development of the largest vortices, has been investigated. The results of these investigations are discussed in this article.

Opis:
This paper reports results from 1g model tests carried out under single gravity on a skirted foundation installed in sand and subjected to a rapid uplifting force. The effects of displacement rates ranging from 5 mm/s to 450 mm/s on the ultimate capacity, suction pressure inside the skirt compartment, and time of extraction were investigated. Test results indicate that the displacement rate significantly affected the magnitude of uplift resistance, as well as the magnitude of suction under the foundation lid, but had little effect on the relationship between stress and the displacement of the foundation. The shapes of the uplift capacity-displacement curve and the suction-displacement curve were similar for all experimental displacement rates.

Opis:
The authors performed laboratory investigations and the analysis of the transformation of deep-water waves in the flume of the Institute of Hydro-Engineering. Special wave trains were generated by our piston-type wavemaker. Due to the transformation the wave profiles changed along the path of propagation. At first, the changes appeared at the ends of the wave train. Far from the generator they intruded into the middle interval of initially regular waves. Finally, the whole wave train consisted of a set of irregular groups. To study the instability problem the wave trains were modulated by superposition of wave groups with very small amplitudes. The number of waves in a group was a very important parameter. When the number was proper, even small amplitudes of modulation resulted in strong development of amplitudes of wave groups. In our theoretical analysis the non-linear Schroedinger equation was used. The comparison of laboratory and theoretical results proved that this equation is useful but it does not describe the phenomenon in the best way. There have been many attempts to construct a numerical procedure that describes the propagation of water waves. Very often the numerical algorithm is not stable and the results of calculation diverge from the expected behaviour. The authors believe that in many cases the instability is due to the physical loss of stability of the wave train and thus it is necessary to have a good understanding of the physics of the studied motion.

Opis:
The paper compares the pre-failure behavior of granular soils investigated in the classical triaxial apparatus and in the true triaxial apparatus, under plane strain conditions. Both experiments are described within the framework of an incremental model of the pre-failure behavior of sands. The methods of tensor algebra are used to compare theoretical predictions with experimental results. The analysis presented deals with the pre-failure deformations of fully drained sand, aswell as with its undrained behavior, including static liquefaction and the specific behavior of an initially dilative soil. Some key questions of soil mechanics are discussed, for instance, whether soil parameters determined from one configuration, such as triaxial conditions, can be applied in other cases.
