Opis:
Heterogeneity of granular materials triggers shear zone formation. In the paper, the FE-analysis of the effect of the material heterogeneity on the formation of a spontaneous shear zone inside of granular materials during a plane strain compression test is presented. The numerical calculations are performed with a finite element method on the basis of a hypoplastic constitutive law extended by polar quantities: rotations, curvatures and couple stresses. A mean grain diameter is used as a characteristic length. The constitutive law takes into account the effect of pressure, void ratio, direction of deformation rate and mean grain diameter on the behaviour of granular bodies. The heterogeneity in the granular body is assumed in the form of spots with a different initial void ratio. The spots are single or distributed randomly and stochastically with an exponential probability function. The single spots are distributed sparsely and densely in an initially dense and loose granular specimen. Special attention is focused on the effect of heterogeneity on the onset of shear localization and its thickness at residual state.

The paper presents a FE-analysis of a spontaneous shear localization inside non-cohesive sand during plane strain compression. The calculations were carried out with a gradient-enhanced hypoplastic constitutive law. The hypoplastic law can reproduce essential features of granular bodies depending on the void ratio, pressure level and deformation direction. To model the thickness of shear zones, a characteristic length of the microstructure was incorporated via the second gradient of the modulus of the deformation rate. To determine the effect of micro-structure, the analysis was performed with different characteristic lengths for the same specimen size.

The paper focuses on the numerical analysis of the effect of texturial anisotropy on shear localization in cohesionless granular materials. For simulation of the mechanical behaviour of a granular material during a monotonous deformation path, a hypoplastic constitutive model was used. To take into account a characteristic length of micro-structure, the constitutive model was extended by micro-polar terms. To take into account texturial effects, the granular hardness was modified. The calculations were carried out with a sand specimen during plane strain compression under constant lateral pressure. A stochastic and uniform distribution of the initial void ratio in the granular specimen was assumed. In addition, shear localization for two different uniform initial void ratios was investigated.

To realistically simulate the formation of a spontaneous shear zone inside cohesionless sand during plane strain compression, a hypoplastic constitutive law was extended by non-local terms. The effects of initial void ratio, pressure level and a characteristic length on the thickness of an interior shear zone were shown. The numerical results were compared with corresponding laboratory tests.

Opis:
The turbulent stresses must be defined to calculate the velocity distributions in open channel flows. In the paper, the turbulent stresses are presented as a sum of the normal and shear turbulent stresses. The normal turbulent stresses act like pressure, i.e., they are isotropic and can be absorbed by the pressure-gradient term in the momentum equations. Therefore, only the shear stresses have to be defined to describe the velocity distribution, e.g., the prime velocity distribution in an open channel flow. The shear turbulent stresses are defined by the 3D mixing length hypothesis. This hypothesis is based on the mixing length tensor (MLT). It is shown how to define the components of MLT for compound channels and how to relate it to the turbulent stress tensor. The components of the MLT are defined based on the concept of the generic mixing length (GML). This concept is presented. Having calculated the generic mixing length, the main components of the MLT as well as the turbulent shear stresses can be calculated. The presented concept is applied to calculate the prime velocity distribution in laboratory open channels with two-stage cross-section. Two channels are considered, one with vertical sidewalls and one with inclined sidewalls. The basic hydrodynamics equations (parabolic approximation of Reynolds equations) together with the turbulence model are solved. The well-known Patankar-Spalding algorithm was used to solve these equations. Some numerical simulations were performed for different components of MLT, i.e. for different structure of turbulence. The results of numerical simulations were compared with the primary velocity distribution measured in the laboratory channel. These comparisons show that the model predicts the velocity field reasonably well.

Opis:
The paper deals with investigations of the effect of the stochastic distribution of the initial void ratio in granular bodies on shear localization during shearing of an infinite granular layer 500 mm high with free dilatancy under plane strain conditions. The initial void ratio was assumed to be stochastic with a correlated random field generated by a conditional rejection method by Walukiewicz et al (1997). To simulate mechanical behaviour of a cohesionless granular material during a monotonous deformation path, a micro-polar hypoplastic constitutive law was used, which takes into account particle rotations, curvatures, non-symmetric stresses, couple stresses and the mean grain diameter as a characteristic length. The proposed model captures the salient mechanical features of granular bodies in a wide range of densities and pressures with a single set of constants. In addition, the comparative FE-analyses were carried out with a uniform and spatially non-correlated random fields of the initial void ratio.

The evolution of shear zones in granular bodies for earth pressure problems of a retaining wall in conditions of plane strain was analyzed. The passive and active failure of a retaining wall was discussed. The calculations were carried out with a rigid and very rough retaining wall undergoing horizontal translation, rotation around the top and rotation around the bottom. The behaviour of dry sand was numerically modelled with a finite element method using a hypoplastic constitutive relation with polar extensions. Attention was paid to the influence of different wall movements on shear localization. The initial void ratio was assumed to be non-uniformly distributed. The geometry of calculated shear zones was compared with corresponding experimental results of laboratory model tests.

The slip boundary condition can be a very useful relation when some specific problems of hydromechanics are considered. According to the classical form of this condition, the slip of a fluid with respect to the solid wall should occur even at a very low velocity of motion. However, both theoretical analysis and certain empirical data suggest that there must be a limit value of the wall shear stress, below which the slip does not occur. According to the simplified balance of adhesive and gravitational forces, a simple experimental method for determining this stress has been proposed and applied in this paper.

The results of comprehensive measurements of three-dimensional turbulent velocities carried out in a laboratory compound channel are presented. Tests were performed in a two-stage channel with a smooth main channel bed consisting of concrete and rough floodplains and sloping banks. Instantaneous velocities were measured with the use of a three-component acoustic Doppler velocimeter. The main aim of the study is the recognition of structure of Reynolds stresses in turbulent open channel flows. Particular attention has been paid to bursting events such as ejections and sweeps. The bursting phenomenon occurs originally near the buffer layer and then shows a coherent or organized flow structure during its convection process. The probability density distributions of the turbulent velocities were measured at different distances from the bed in the main channel and also above the inclined walls. In the main channel, the lateral turbulent velocity is seen to follow the normal Gaussian distribution more closely than the remaining two components. Above the inclined walls, all distributions turned out to have greater skewness. The probability density distributions of correlations between velocity fluctuations were also calculated. These distributions have long tails and sharp peaks and fit the theoretical distributions very well. The structure of instantaneous Reynolds stresses was analyzed by a quadrant technique with an arbitrarily chosen threshold level. It has been shown that the largest contribution to turbulent stresses comes from the second quadrant (ejection) and the fourth quadrant (sweep). The basic temporal characteristics for quadrant events, like the average and maximum time for a zero hole size, have been determined in the study. Calculations of maximum duration times for all events reveal that times are greater for even quadrants than for odd quadrants.

The paper deals with research uncertainties, difficulties, inaccuracies and unreliabilities related to the modelling of physical phenomena involving coastal lithodynamics. The considerations are focused on processes of wave transformation, wave-driven currents and sediment transport itself. It is shown that possible inaccuracies at individual stages of the modelling of coastal hydrodynamics can lead to serious uncertainties with respect to the ultimate modelling output, namely bed shear stresses and sediment transport rates. These inaccuracies result mostly from arbitrarily assumed parameters and constants. Other modelling biases discussed in the paper comprise simplifications and approximations with respect to sediment resources and size-graded properties, randomness of hydrodynamic impacts, bottom roughness and land-borne factors involved in coastal lithodynamics.

The paper describes the SPH modeling of a plane problem of fluid flow around a rigid circular cylinder. In the model considered, the cylinder is placed in a rectangular fluid domain at a certain distance from a horizontal plane boundary, and it is subjected to fluid flow forces. The fluid motion is induced by a piston type generator. The generator - fluid system starts to move from rest at a certain moment of time. The work aims at a discrete description of the fluid flow around the cylinder and, at the same time, calculation of the pressure distribution along the circumference of the cylinder and the resultant of the pressure on the cylinder. In order to solve the initial value problem considered, a new SPH formulation of boundary conditions on the cylinder surface is proposed which match the physical condition for the fluid velocity at this boundary. For a viscous fluid, an approximate description of the stress tensor is formulated which allows to reduce the differentiation of field functions to the first order in calculating the shear forces in the SPH approach.

Numerical FE investigations of size effects in problems of footings on sand were performed. Micro-polar hypoplastic constitutive model was used to describe a mechanical behaviour of a cohesionless granular material during a monotonic deformation path. The FE analyses were carried out with three different footing widths. In deterministic calculations, a uniform distribution of initial void ratio was used. In statistical calculations, initial void ratios took the form of random spatial fields described by a truncated Gaussian random distribution. In order to reduce the number of stochastic realizations without sacrificing the accuracy of the calculations, a stratified sampling method was applied. The numerical results were compared with corresponding laboratory tests by Tatsuoka et al (1997). The numerical results show that the bearing capacity of footings decreases with increasing specimen size. If the initial void ratio is stochastically distributed, the mean bearing capacity of footings may be larger than the deterministic value. The statistical size effect is smaller than the deterministic one.

The paper deals with a sandy shore located on the open sea side of the Hel Peninsula in Poland (the south Baltic Sea coast). The study site displays a cross-shore profile that intensively dissipates wave energy, mostly due to breaking. The theoretical modelling of wave transformation at this site reveals specific distributions of wave heights and bed shear stresses. The sediment borrow areas, presently used and identified for future exploitation, are located inconveniently far from the periodically re-nourished shores. The paper presents the possibilities of dredging works in the coastal zone that would not disturb the natural nearshore motion of water and sediments. The results of the study can be helpful in formulating generic safety standards, at least with respect to dissipative shores of non-tidal or micro-tidal seas, like the Baltic Sea.
