Opis:
The effect of reaction substrates for the TiC carbide synthesis on the composite layer thickness produced in cast iron was examined. It was found that, at a constant weight of the charge amounting to 0.5 kg, changing the weight of the, placed in mould, stoichiometric mixture of titanium carbide (from 0.01 to 0.04 kg) changed the thickness of the composite layer from 1 to 15 mm. Carbides synthesis starts directly in mould induced by the temperature of molten alloy poured into this mould (1700 K). The TiC carbides formed in this reaction are later, i.e. during alloy solidification, acting as a base composite material. The size of TiC carbides obtained in the synthesis is from 1 to 10 μm. They occur in the layers as locally compact and coagulated forms. Microstructure, chemical composition and structure of the obtained materials were tested by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray microanalysis (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

Pouring of liquid aluminium is typically accompanied by disturbance of the free surface. During these disturbances, the free surface oxide films can be entrained in the bulk of liquid, also pockets of air can be accidentally trapped in this oxide films. The resultant scattering of porosity in castings seems nearly always to originate from the pockets of entrained air in oxide films. Latest version of ProCast software allows to identify the amount of oxides formed at the free surface and where they are most likely to end-up in casts. During a filling calculation, ProCast can calculate different indicators which allow to better quantify the filling pattern. The fluid front tracking indicator “ Free surface time exposure” has the units [cm2s]. At each point of the free surface, the free surface area is multiplied by the time. This value is cumulated with the value of the previous timestep. In addition, this value is transported with the free surface and with the fluid flow. Experiments to validate this new functions were executed.

Opis:
Al-enriched layer was formed on a magnesium substrate with use of casting. The magnesium melt was cast into a steel mould with an aluminium insert placed inside. Different conditions of the casting process were applied. The reaction between the molten magnesium and the aluminium piece during casting led to the formation of an Al-enriched surface layer on the magnesium substrate. The thickness of the layer was dependent on the casting conditions. In all fabricated layers the following phases were detected: a solid solution of Mg in Al, Al3Mg2, Mg17Al120 and a solid solution of Mg in Al. When the temperature of the melt and the mould was lower (variant 1 – 670oC and 310oC; variant 2 – 680oC and 310oC, respectively) the unreacted thin layer of aluminium was observed in the outer zone. Applying higher temperatures of the melt (685oC) and the mould (325oC) resulted in deep penetration of aluminium into the magnesium substrate. Areas enriched in aluminium were locally observed. The Al-enriched layers composed mainly of Mg-Al intermetallic phases have hardness from 187-256 HV0.1.

In the method of full mould the polystyrene model, which fills the mould cavity in the course of filling by the liquid metal is subjected to the influence of high temperature and passes from the solid, through the liquid, to the gaseous state. During this process solid and gaseous products of thermal decomposition of polystyrene patterns occur. The kinetics of this process is significantly influenced by the gasification temperature, density and mass of the polystyrene patterns. One of the basic parameters is the amount and rate of gas from the polystyrene model during its thermal decomposition. Specific properties of ceramic layer used for lost foam castings are required. To ensure optimal process flow of metal in the form proper permeability of the ceramic layer is needed. To ensure optimal conditions for technological casting method EPS patterns are tested and determined are the technological parameters and physical-chemical process in: material properties of the pattern, properties of the ceramic layer applied to the pattern, pattern gasification kinetics, pouring process. In the course of the research the characteristics of polystyrene and ceramic layer were determined.

Opis:
This paper presents an innovative casting method that allows manufacturing the layers on the cast by applying the metallic coating inside the mold. In order to define the possibilities of formation of the metal layers on the castings attempts were made to modify the mold and the cast for models created of two selected plastic materials. The main issue was the choice of a suitable coating material and a casting alloy. The procedure was projected in a manner that would enable the model polymer coating to get into reaction with the cast liquid metal after the burn away. The adjustment of the casting cavity was obtained by the nickel coating. The pit was then filled with the aluminum alloy, when studying the aspects of diffusion and adhesion between the two metals (Ni and Al). On the assumption that nickel coating will generate a diffusion connection with the cast material, it is potential to create intermetallic phases of the system of Ni- Al that will modify the surface attributes of the molding surface. Such designed is to obtain, in a single operation, a ready casting part with a diffusion layer surface.

Opis:
The study presents the results of research on the development of composite zones in castings based on the intermetallic phase of Ni3Al. Composite zones were obtained by placing packets with substrates for the reaction of titanium carbide in a foundry mould. To provide a variable carbides content in the composite zone, two compositions of the packets were prepared. The first packet contained only substrates for the reaction of TiC synthesis; the second one also contained a filler. The resulting composite zones in castings were examined for the filler effect on changes in the volume fraction, size and morphology of carbides in the zone. In addition, the effect of filler on the mechanical properties of the zone was verified, observing changes of Vickers hardness in this area. It was found that the presence of filler in the composition of the packet for synthesis reduced the content of carbides, as well as their size and morphology. Lower surface content of carbides reduced hardness of the zone, which enabled smooth control of the mechanical properties. At the same time, the use of the selected filler did not disturb the course of the TiC carbide synthesis.

Opis:
The thermochemical treatment applied to improve the surface properties of AZ91 consisted in heating the material in contact with AlSi10Mg powder at 445 oC for 30 min. During heat treatment process the powder was held under pressure to facilitate the diffusion of the alloying elements to the substrate and, accordingly, the formation of a modified layer. Two pressures, 1 MPa and 5 MPa, were tested. The resultant layers, containing hard Mg2Si and Mg17Al12 phases, were examined using an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). The experimental data show that the layer microstructure was dependent on the pressure applied. A thicker, three-zone layer (about 200 μm) was obtained at 1 MPa. At the top, there were Mg2Si phase particles distributed over the Mg17Al12 intermetallic phase matrix. The next zone was a eutectic (Mg17Al12 and a solid solution of Al in Mg) with Mg2Si phase particles embedded in it. Finally, the area closest to the AZ91 substrate was a eutectic not including the Mg2Si phase particles. By contrast, the layer produced at a pressure of 5 MPa had lower thickness of approx. 150 μm and a two-zone structure. Mg2Si phase particles were present in both zones. In the upper zone, Mg2Si phase particles were regularly distributed over the Mg17Al12 intermetallic phase matrix. The lower zone, adjacent to the AZ91, was characterized by a higher volume fraction of Mg2Si phase particles distributed over the matrix composed mainly of Mg17Al12. The alloyed layers enriched with Al and Si had much higher hardness than the AZ91 substrate.

The paper presents the technology of bimetallic castings using the casting method of applying layers directly during the casting process. The bimetallic casting consists of a load-bearing part (typical casting material, i.e. gray cast iron with flake graphite) and a working part (titanium insert). The titanium insert was made by printing using the selective laser melting (SLM) method, and its shape was spatial. The verification of the bimetallic castings was carried out mainly based on metallographic tests, temperature and thickness measurements. Structure examinations containing metallographic microscopic studies with the use of a light microscope (LOM) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with microanalysis of the chemical composition (energy dispersive spectroscopy - EDS).The aim of the tests was to select the appropriate geometrical insert parameters for bimetallic castings within the tested range. The correct parameters of both the insert, pouring temperature and the casting modulus affect the diffusion processes and, consequently, the formation of carbides and the creation of bimetallic castings.

Opis:
In this study, modification of the AZ91 magnesium alloy surface layer with a CO2 continuous wave operation laser has been taken on. The extent and character of structural changes generated in the surface layer of the material was being assessed on the basis of both macro- and microscopy investigations, and the EDX analysis. Considerable changes in the structure of the AZ91 alloy surface layer and the morphology of phases have been found. The remelting processing was accompanied by a strong refinement of the structure and a more uniform distribution of individual phases. The conducted investigations showed that the remelting zone dimensions are a result of the process parameters, and that they can be controlled by an appropriate combination of basic remelting parameters, i.e. the laser power, the distance from the sample surface, and the scanning rate. The investigations and the obtained results revealed the possibility of an effective modification of the AZ91 magnesium alloy surface layer in the process of remelting carried out with a CO2 laser beam.

The results of investigations of the sorption and desorption process of surface layers of sand moulds are presented in the paper. Investigations comprised three kinds of moulding sands with one inorganic binder (hydrated sodium silicate) and two organic binders: (furfuryl resin and alkyd resin). Tests of sorption process were performed on the prototype research stand allowing to maintain a constant, high temperature of surroundings (28–33 °C) and the relative air humidity above 95%. Tests of desorption process were performed on the analogical research stand ensuring lower value of temperature and the air humidity. The gravimetric method was applied in both measurements. On the bases of achieved results it was shown that surface layers of sand moulds absorb water vapour from surroundings with various intensity which is determined of the chemical composition. Simultaneously, all of the moistened moulding sands which were subjected to the drying process were given moisture to the surroundings back. Sorption and desorption processes curves do not coincide. In case of desorption process the moisture content in the surface layers of all the tested moulding sands is higher irrespective of the kind of moulding sand.

Al- and Al/Zn-enriched layers containing intermetallic phases were deposited on the Mg substrate by heating the Mg specimens in contact with the powdered materials in a vacuum furnace. The Al-enriched surface layers were produced using Al powder, whereas the Al/Zn-enriched layers were obtained from an 80 wt.% Al + 20 wt.% Zn powder mixture. The microstructure and composition of the layers were analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results showed that the Al-enriched layer comprised an Mg17Al12 intermetallic phase and a solid solution of Al in Mg. The layer obtained from the Al+Zn powder mixture was composed of Mg-Al-Zn intermetalic phases and a solid solution of Al and Zn in Mg. Adding 20% of Zn into the Al powder resulted in the formation of a considerably thicker layer. Moreover, the hardness of the surface layers was much higher than that of the Mg substrate.
