Opis:
The paper presents studies of topography of the metal matrix composite castings using profilography, confocal microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The examined materials were composites from the ex-situ group, manufactured by the saturation of reinforcement (aluminosilicate or carbon) with the liquid aluminum alloy (AlSi9 or AlSi11). The materials were observed on the various surface state, resulting from different stages of preparation of the polished section for the metallographic between the composite matrix and reinforcement.

Opis:
Detailed studies on the effects of pulsed laser interference heating on surface characteristics and subsurface microstructure of amorphous Fe80Si11B9 alloy are reported. Laser interference heating, with relatively low pulsed laser energy (90 and 120 mJ), but with a variable number (from 50-500) of consecutive laser pulses permitted to get energy accumulation in heated areas. Such treatment allowed to form two- Dimensional micro-islands of laser-affected material periodically distributed in amorphous matrix. The crystallization process of amorphous FeSiB ribbons was studied by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Detailed microstructural examination showed that the use of laser beam, resulted in development of nanostructure in the heated areas of the amorphous ribbon. The generation of nanocrystalline seed islands created by pulsed laser interference was observed. This key result may evidently give new knowledge concerning the differences in microstructure formed during the conventional and lased induced crystallization the amorphous alloys. Further experiments are needed to clarify the effect of pulsed laser interference crystallization on magnetic properties of these alloys.

Opis:
A fractured nutcracker was examined for determining the root cause/s for premature fracture/failure. This is one of the common tools used typically for cracking hard nuts. In this study, metallurgical failure analysis techniques namely, visual inspection, optical microscopy, SEM, and hardness tests were used in investigating the broken product. From the metallurgical analysis, it was determined that the combined effect of low carbon equivalent and presence of inclusions contributed to the sudden fracture of the nut cracking tool.

Opis:
AISI 52100 bearing steels are commonly used in applications requiring high hardness and abrasion resistance. The bearing steels are working under dynamic loads in service conditions and their toughness properties become important. In order to provide the desired mechanical properties, various heat treatments (austenizing, quenching and tempering) are usually applied. In this study, AISI 52100 bearing steel samples were austenized at 900°C for ½ h and water quenched to room temperature. Then tempering was carried out at 795°C, 400°C and 200°C for ½ h. In order to investigate the effect of heat treatment conditions on wear behavior, dry friction tests were performed according to ASTM G99-05 Standard with a ‘ball-on-disk’ type tribometer. The samples were tested against steel and ceramic counterparts using the parameters of 100 m distance and 30 N load and 0.063 m/s rotational speed. After wear test, the surface characterization was carried out using microscopy. Wear loss values were calculated using a novel optical method on both flat and counterpart specimens.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono metodykę i wyniki badań, jakie otrzymano identyfikując produkty procesów elektrodowych zachodzących w bezwodnych metanolowych roztworach 0.05M CH3ONa – 0.05M LiCl na powierzchni elektrody niklowej.
The paper presents the identifying of morphology and composition of surface products occurring on nickel electrode during cathodic polarization in the anhydrous CH3OH – 0.05M CH3ONa – 0.05M LiCl. SEM, EDX and in situ infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) were used for analysis of surface layer. The investigations showed that nickel electrode undergoes “pseudopassivation” in cathodic range in course of formation of nickel methoxide film. The mechanism of passivation process has been proposed.

Opis:
The objective of this study was to deposit directly chromium with diamond nanoparticles (ND) on aluminum alloys and investigate the coating surface. The chromium coatings on aluminum alloys were obtained by electrochemical deposition. The coatings were doped with ND. The diamond nanoparticles were obtained by detonation synthesis. Chromium coatings were deposited on aluminum alloys with a silicon content of 7 % and 10 %. The ND concentration in the electrolyte was 25 g/l. The surface analysis was performed by means of Atomic force microscopy. The surface of the coating of chromium with ND on Al10Si is twice more even than that on Al7Si. The microstructure and microhardness were examined with a metallographic microscope and a microhardness tester. The microhardness of the coated samples is 9163 MPa compared to 893 MPa of uncoated aluminum samples. The thickness of the chromium coatings doped with diamond nanoparticles is between 45 – 55 μm. The coatings are dense, continuous and uniform with good adhesion to the substrate material.
