Opis:
Mg-0.5Si-xSn (x=0.95, 2.9, 5.02wt.%) alloys were cast and extruded at 593K (320 ºC) with an extrusion ratio of 25. The microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast and extruded test alloys were investigated by OM, SEM, XRD and tensile tests. The experimental results indicate that the microstructure of the Mg-0.5Si-xSn alloys consists of primary α-Mg dendrites and an interdendritic eutectic containing α-Mg, Mg2Si and Mg2Sn. There is no coarse primary Mg2Si phase in the test alloys due to low Si content. With the increase in the Sn content, the Mg2Si phase was refined. The shape of Mg2Si phase was changed from branch to short bar, and the size of them were reduced. The ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of Mg-0.52Si-2.9Sn alloy at the temperature of 473K (200 ºC) reach 133MPa and 112MPa respectively. Refined eutectic Mg2Si phase and dispersed Mg2Sn phase with good elevated temperature stability are beneficial to improve the elevated temperature performance of the alloys. However, with the excess addition of Sn, large block-like Mg2Sn appears around the grain boundary leading to lower mechanical properties.

Opis:
In the present investigation, the influence of addition of the rare earth element samarium (Sm) in different concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9wt.%) on the microstructure and tensile properties of the Al-Si-Cu 319 alloy have been evaluated. Microstructural constituents such as SDAS of α-Al and characteristics of eutectic silicon particles were observed by optical microscopy. It was concluded from the findings that Sm addition reduces the size of secondary dendrite arm spacings (SDAS) and altered the morphology of the eutectic silicon particles from needle-like to lamellar and smaller segments. The tensile properties of the Al-Si-Cu 319 alloy improved with the concentration of Sm. It was found that the highest tensile properties were obtained at 0.7wt.% addition of Sm, i.e., 55.5% higher than unmodified 319 alloy. With the further addition of the Sm above 0.7wt.%, it does not improve the tensile properties of the alloy. This can be attributed to the precipitation of the brittle and needle like quaternary Sm-rich intermetallic compounds observed through Scanning electron microscopy.

Opis:
This article addresses the results of microstructural examinations of the volume solidifying Fe–C–V–Si alloys containing carbon in the range of 1.39÷1.76%, vanadium in the range of 6.77÷7.77% and silicon in the range of 0.02÷3.10. The melting charge was Armco iron, ferro-vanadium with 81.7 wt.%V, spectrally pure graphite and technically pure silica. It was shown that with increasing the silicon content, the microstructure of the resulting alloy changing. These changes include both a matrix the shape of the primary carbides and type of crystallizing eutectic. In the studied alloys was observed following eutectic: fibrous (crystallize as non-faceted/ non-faceted eutectic), complex regular (crystallize as faceted/ non-faceted eutectic), spiral (crystallize as faceted/ faceted eutectic). The results illustrated by the images of the microstructures made with an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope.
