Opis:
In spite of the fact that in most applications, magnesium alloys are intended for operation in environments with room temperature, these alloys are subject to elevated temperature and oxidizing atmosphere in various stages of preparation (casting, welding, thermal treatment). At present, the studies focus on development of alloys with magnesium matrix, intended for plastic forming. The paper presents results of studies on oxidation rate of WE43 and ZRE1 magnesium foundry alloys in dry and humidified atmosphere of N2+1%O2. Measurements of the oxidation rate were carried out using a Setaram thermobalance in the temperature range of 350-480°C. Corrosion products were analyzed by SEM-SEI, BSE and EDS. It was found that the oxide layer on the WE43 alloy has a very good resistance to oxidation. The high protective properties of the layer should be attributed to the presence of yttrium in this alloy. On the other hand, a porous, two-layer scale with a low adhesion to the substrate forms on the ZRE1 alloy. The increase in the sample mass in dry gas is lower than that in humidified gas.

Opis:
In the knock-out process, as well as in the preliminary phase of moulding sand reclamation, the issue of energy demand for the process of crushing used sand agglutinations, preferably to single grains, is particularly important. At present, numerical values of moulding sand impact resistance, which would allow energy-related aspects of this process to be forecast, are not known, as such research has not been carried out. It seems that impact resistance tested on very small cross-section samples, which allows us to very precisely reveal some unique features of a moulding sand with organic and inorganic binders, is an important parameter, which so far has not been taken into account for evaluation of mechanical properties of moulding sands. Preliminary attempts to determine impact resistance of moulding sands have been carried out as part of own research of the author. The conducted investigations aimed at determining the relationships between the obtained values of tensile strength and impact resistance of moulding sands. In addition, the effect of holding samples at temperatures of 100oC, 200oC, 300oC on the value of impact resistance was determined, both for sands made with fresh and with reclaimed sand grains.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of the abrasive wear resistance of selected types of nodular cast iron, including ADI, cooperating with quartz sand and 100 grit abrasive paper. It has been shown that carbides in nodular cast iron cause an increase in wear resistance of 6 to 12% depending on the surface fraction of the carbides and type of the matrix. For the same unit pressure the mass loss of the cast iron cooperating with quartz sand is many times larger than the cast iron cooperating with abrasive paper. For both abrasives the highest wear resistance showed nodular cast iron with upper and lower bainite and carbides.

This paper deals with the evaluation of the corrosion resistance of the Al-Si alloys alloyed with the different amount of antimony. Specifically it goes about the alloy AlSi7Mg 0,3 which is antimony alloyed in the concentrations 0; 0,001; 0,005; 0,01 a 0,05 wt. % of antimony. The introduction of the paper is dedicated to the theory of the aluminium alloys corrosion resistance, testing and evaluation of the corrosion resistance. The influence of the antimony to the Al-Si alloys properties is described further in the introduction. The experimental part describes the experimental samples which were prepared for the experiment and further they were exposed to the loading in the atmospheric conditions for a period of the 3 months. The experimental samples were evaluated macroscopically and microscopically. The results of the experiment were documented and the conclusions in terms of the antimony impact to the corrosion resistance of the Al-Si alloy were concluded. There was compared the corrosion resistance of the Al-Si alloy antimony alloyed (with the different antimony content) with the results of the Al-Si alloy without the alloying after the corrosion load in the atmospheric conditions in the experiment.

Opis:
High-chromium cast irons are used as abrasion resistant materials. Their wear resistance depends on quantity of carbides and the matrix supporting these carbides. The paper presents the results of cast irons of chemical composition (in wt. %) 19–22 Cr and 2–4.5 C alloyed by 1.7 Mo + 5 Ni + 2 Mn to improve their toughness, which were tested in working conditions of ferroalloys crushing. Tests showed that these as-cast chromium cast irons with mostly austenitic matrix achieved the hardness of 38-45 HRC, but their relative abrasion resistance Ψ ranged from 1.3 to 4.6, was higher comparing to the tool made from the X210Cr12 steel heat treated on hardness 61 HRC. The transformation of austenite into martensite occurs not only at the worn strained areas (on a surface of scratch) but also in their neighbourhood. Due to the work hardening of relatively large volumes of transformed austenite the cast iron possesses high abrasion resistance also on the surfaces where low pressures are acting. The tough abrasion-resistant cast iron well proved for production of dynamic and wear stressed castings e.g., crusher hammers, cutting tools for ceramic etc.

Opis:
The Al/Zn-enriched surface layers were fabricated on Mg substrate by heating the specimens in contact with an Al + 40 wt.% Zn powder mixture at 445oC for 60 min. The microstructure and corrosion and wear resistance of the layers were investigated and discussed. The experimental results show that the layers were composed of Mg17(Al,Zn)12 and Mg5Al2Zn2 intermetallic phases and a solid solution of Al and Zn in Mg. They were integrated with the substrate trough a zone of a solid solution of Al and Zn in Mg. The potentiodynamic polarization measurements indicated that the specimens with Al/Zn-enriched layer had better corrosion resistance than the bare Mg. The microhardness of the layers containing Mg-Al-Zn intermetallic phases was much higher than that of the Mg substrate. The sliding wear tests showed that the wear resistance of the specimens with a surface layer containing intermetallic phases was also superior to that of untreated Mg.

Improvement of properties of silumins in scope of classic methods is connected with changes in morphology of silicon precipitation through: process of modification of alloy, maintaining a suitable temperature of overheating and pouring into moulds, as well as perfection of heat treatment processes. Obtained structure of casting have a direct influence on mechanical and technological properties of machinery parts, and therefore, usage of knowledge on crystallization to control of crystallization’s kinetics of castings in order to optimize obtained structure and introduction of modern methods of heat treatment, enabling considerable improvement of mechanical and technological properties, becomes an important factor. Dispersion hardening with soaking of alloy near temperature of solidus, consisting in heating of poured specimens to temperature of solutioning, keeping in such temperature, cooling down in cold water (20oC), and next operation of artificial ageing have effect on change of tensile strength Rm of a selected hypo-eutectoid silumins. Selection of suitable parameters of dispersion hardening is condition of obtainment of positive results in terms of improvement of tensile strength Rm and has effect on its economic aspects.

Growing market demand, more and more efficient and cleaner vehicles create a challenge for automotive industry. Properties of aluminum, such as: high strength stiffness to weight ratio, high fluidity and castability, easy machinability and weldability and good corrosion resistance make them ideal candidate to replacement of a heavier materials used in vehicles, and the same, have direct effect on fuel consumption. Comparing to steel, titanium or carbon fibers, aluminum alloys are characterized by low impact strength, which can be improved by a heat treatment. In this study one investigated the effect of the heat treatment (natural ageing) on the EN AC-AlSi9Cu3(Fe) alloy modified with strontium. Solution heat treatment temperature’s ranges were selected on the base of heating (melting) curves recorded with use of the thermal derivative analysis (ATD) method. Temperatures of the solution heat treatment were 495°C, 510°C, and 525°C ± 5°C, while the solutioning time ranged from 15 to 105 minutes (15; 60 and 105 min.). Time of the ageing amounted to 1, 3 and 7 days. To determine impact strength of the alloy after performed heat treatment one implemented simplified Charpy test. Maximal values of the impact strength (9,6 J/cm2) were obtained for solutioning temperature 510°C and solutioning time 15 minutes, after seven days of ageing. Obtained results enabled determination of solutioning parameters, which allow obtainment of increased impact strength of the investigation alloy for the T4 heat treatment.

Opis:
The resistance of cast iron to abrasive wear depends on the metal abrasive hardness ratio. For example, hardness of the structural constituents of the cast iron metal matrix is lower than the hardness of ordinary silica sand. Also cementite, the basic component of unalloyed white cast iron, has hardness lower than the hardness of silica. Some resistance to the abrasive effect of the aforementioned silica sand can provide the chromium white cast iron containing in its structure a large amount of (Cr, Fe)7C3 carbides characterised by hardness higher than the hardness of the silica sand in question. In the present study, it has been anticipated that the white cast iron structure will be changed by changing the type of metal matrix and the type of carbides present in this matrix, which will greatly expand the application area of castings under the harsh operating conditions of abrasive wear. Moreover, the study compares the results of abrasive wear resistance tests performed on the examined types of cast iron. Tests of abrasive wear resistance were carried out on a Miller machine. Samples of standard dimensions were exposed to abrasion in a double to-and-fro movement, sliding against the bottom of a trough filled with an aqueous abrasive mixture containing SiC + distilled water. The obtained results of changes in the sample weight were approximated with a power curve and shown further in the study.

The pattern of new ATD–P tester has parts reflecting implemented samples. Computer simulations regarding initial verification of new tester were performed in NovaFlow software. Chromium cast iron melts were made for testing the sampler in real conditions and TDA analysis for casting material were conducted. The sandmix was prepared on silica sand matrix according to the ALPHASET technology. This new solution greatly simplifies the preparations of materials difficult to machine.

The paper presents the results of comparative tests of the fatigue properties conducted on two non-ferrous alloys designated as Al 6082 and Al 7075 which, due to the satisfactory functional characteristics, are widely used as engineering materials. The fatigue tests were carried out using a proprietary, modified low cycle test (MLCF). Particular attention was paid to the fatigue strength exponent b and fatigue ductility exponent c. Based on the tests carried out, the results comprised within the range defined by the literature were obtained. These results prove a satisfactory sensitivity of the method applied, its efficiency, the possibility of conducting tests in a fully economical way and above all the reliability of the obtained results of the measurements. Thus, the thesis has been justified that the modified low cycle fatigue test (MLCF) can be recommended as a tool used in the development of alloy characteristics within the range of low-cycle variable loads.

Opis:
There are presented results of a research on bending strength of aluminum alloy EN AC-44200 based composite materials reinforced with aluminum oxide particles. The composite materials were manufactured by squeeze casting with the liquid EN AC-44200 Al alloy of porous ceramic preforms under pressure of 100 MPa. For reinforcing of the EN AC-44200 matrix alloy, preforms made of Al2O3 particles with porosity 60, 70, 80 and 90% were applied. In relation to unreinforced EN AC-44200 base Al alloy, bending strength of composite materials increased about 10% per each 10 vol.% increase of Al2O3 particles in the matrix. The highest bending strength of over 400 MPa was reached by the materials reinforced with 30 and 40 vol.% of Al2O3 particles. Microscopic observations of fracture surfaces confirm that the particles intensively restrict plastic deformation of the alloy, which contributes to creation of a typically brittle fracture. The particles present on the crack propagation path inhibit development of microcracks initiated during bend tests. Most often, the fracture runs through interfacial matrix-particle boundaries, which is caused by brittle bridges of silica binder, present on these boundaries.
