Opis:
Aluminium alloy castings become more popular when a refined microstructure and a uniform distribution of Si particles are easily produced. One of the technologies that can fulfil these requirements is Friction Stir Processing (FSP). Therefore, the formation of various microstructural regions during FSP of AlSi9Mg alloy has been studied. It is presented that each of the regions are characterized by unique microstructures. Prior to FSP, the microstructure of a representative as-cast aluminium alloy was composed of Al dendrites and a nonuniform distribution of Si and Fe. FSP microstructurally modified and significantly refined the as-cast material, effectively eliminating the microstructural segregation and porosity of the base material. The characteristic microstructures are reflected in the hardness distribution. The hardness of the modified area was different from the base material.

Opis:
The presented work describes the results of examination of the mechanical properties of castings made either of AlSi9Mg alloy matrix composite reinforced with short carbon fibre or of the pure AlSi9Mg alloy. The tensile strength, the yield strength, Young’s modulus, and the unit elongation were examined both for initial castings and for castings made of the remelted composite or AlSi9Mg alloy. After preparing metallographic specimens, the structure of the remelted materials was assessed. A few non-metallic inclusions were observed in the structure of the remelted composite, not occurring in the initial castings. Mechanical testing revealed that all the examined properties of the initial composite material exceed those of the non-reinforced matrix. A decrease in mechanical properties was stated both for the metal matrix and for the composite after the remelting process, but this decrease was so slight that it either does not preclude them from further use or does not restrict the range of their application.

Opis:
Among non-ferrous alloys, the aluminum alloys have found the most widespread applications within foundry industry. Hypoeutectic silumin of the AlSi9Mg grade is commonly used for large, heavy duty machinery castings with complicated shape and high strength. From technical point of view, tendency to creation of coarse structure can be considered as a drawback of such alloy, what can have adverse effect on properties of the alloy. To obtain optimal structure of the castings and to assure improvement of their mechanical properties, the most effective treatment to perform is modification. Quality of performed modification treatment depends on proper dosing of inoculant and maintaining suitable temperature and time of keeping the alloy before pouring. In the paper are presented test results of crystallization course of refined and modified silumin of the EN AC–43300 (AlSi9Mg) grade, used in castings of pump casings. It has been determined an effect of performed processes of refining and modification on the mechanical properties (Rm, A5, HB and KCV), additionally, metallurgical tests of the alloy have been performed. Basing on analysis of obtained results, the most advantageous modification variant, which is suitable for castings of pump casings and complying with requirements of customers, has been selected.

Opis:
Mechanical properties of aluminum-silicon alloys are defined by condition of alloying components in the structure, i.e. plastic metallic matrix created from solid solution &alpha on the basis of Al, as well as hard and brittle precipitations of silicon. Size and distribution of silicon crystals are the main factors having effect on field of practical applications of such alloys. Registration of crystallization processes of the alloys on stage of their preparation is directly connected with practical implementation of crystallization theory to controlling technological processes, enabling obtainment of suitable structure of the material and determining its usage for specific requirements. An attempt to evaluate correlation between values of characteristic points laying on crystallization curves and recorded with use of developed by the author TVDA method (commonly denominated as ATND method) is presented in the paper together with assessment of hardness of tested alloy. Basing on characteristic points from the TVDA method, hardness of EN AC-AlSi9Mg alloy modified with strontium has been described in the paper in a significant way by the first order polynomial.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to select the optimal content of zirconium introduced as an alloying additive to obtain the best strength properties of Al-Si alloy. A technically important disadvantage is the tendency of silumins to form a coarse-grained structure that adversely affects the mechanical properties of castings. To improve the structure, modification processes and alloying additives are used, both of which can effectively refine the structure and thus increase the mechanical properties. According to the Hall-Petch relationship, the finer is the structure, the higher are the mechanical properties of the alloy. The proposed addition of zirconium as an alloying element has a beneficial effect on the structure and properties of silumins, inhibiting the grain growth. The starting material was an aluminium-silicon casting alloy designated as EN AC-AlSi9Mg (AK9). Zirconium (Zr) was added to the alloy in an amount of 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4% and 0.5% by weight. From the modified alloy, after verification of the chemical composition, samples were cast into sand moulds based on a phenolic resin. The first step in the research was testing the casting properties of alloys with the addition of Zr (castability, density, porosity). In the next step, the effect of zirconium addition on the structure and mechanical properties of castings was determined.

Opis:
The article focuses on the analysis of the effect of Zr on the properties of the aluminium alloy AlSi9Cu1Mg. The effect of Zr was evaluated depending on the change in mechanical properties and heat resistance during a gradual addition of Zr with an increase of 0.05 wt. % Zr. Half of the cast experimental samples from each variant were heat treated by precipitation hardening T6 (hereinafter HT). The measured values in both states indicate an improvement of the mechanical properties, especially in the experimental variants with a content of Zr ≥ 0.20 wt. %. In the evaluation of Rm, the most significant improvement occurred in the experimental variant with an addition of Zr 0.25 wt. % after HT and E in the experimental variant with addition of Zr 0.20 wt. % after HT. Thus, a difference was found from the results of the authors defining the positive effect of Zr, in particular at 0.15 wt. %. When evaluating the microstructure of the AlSi9Cu1Mg alloy after Zr alloying, Zr phases are already eliminated with the addition of Zr 0.10 wt. %. Especially at higher levels of Zr ≥ 0.20 wt. %, long needle phases with slightly cleaved morphology are visible in the metal matrix. It can be stated that a negative manifestation of Zr alloying is expressed by an increase in gassing of experimental alloys, especially in variants with a content of Zr ≥ 0.15 wt. %. Experimental samples were cast into ceramic moulds. The development of an experimental alloy AlSi9Cu1Mg alloyed with Zr would allow the production of a more sophisticated material applicable to thin-walled Al castings capable of operating at higher temperature loads.
