This study investigated the Octyl Phenol Ethoxylate (OPE) removal potentials of raw and treated industrial treatment sludges (ITS) at different pH. Experiments were conducted in a set of 500 ml Erlenmeyer flasks, into which OPE solutions of 300 ml with different initial concentrations (50-300 μg/l) were added into. Adsorption of Octyl Phenol Ethoxylate from an aqueous solution into ITS105 (T=105°C), ITS300 (T=300°C), ITS600 (T=600°C) and ITS450 (pyrolyzed, T=450°C) was carried out at a room temperature. The OPE adsorption rate increase in the treatment sludge processed at 600°C. As opposed to the sludge treated at 105°C, the adsorption rate decreased as the concentration increased. The reason for this was that the porous structure was degraded at 600°C, and the surface charge balance was disrupted. ITS300 had a lower adsorption capacity for Octyl Phenol Ethoxylate removal than ITS105, ITS600 and ITS450 (pyrolyzed). The treatment sludge pyrolyzed at 450°C conformed with the Freundlich isotherm at pH 4 (R2=0.94) and pH 7 (R2=0.89). The treatment sludge heat-treated at 600°C conformed with the Freundlich isotherm at pH 4 (R2=0.97), pH 7 (R2=0.98) and pH 10 (R2=0.99). Additionally, for ITS600, the Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) isotherm was valid at neutral pH. The OPE adsorption coefficient for ITS600 at pH 4 and pH 7 was calculated as 1.05 L/μg and 1.083 L/μg, respectively. According to the BET isotherm (for ITS600) the qm values at pH 4 and pH 7 were respectively 8.21 μg/g and 2.92 μg/g. The temperature of the adsorption value obtained with the Temkin isotherm showed that the interaction between the OPE and the adsorbent substances was not a chemical or ionic interaction but probably a physical interaction.

Recent studies have shown that over half of the world’s population lives in urban areas, with the number of people living in slums growing by over 20 million per year and people living in urban areas lacking access to adequate sanitation. This study presents a review of the challenges facing fecal sludge management (FSM). A globally relevant issue in developing urban centers, especially in selected developing countries in West Africa was discussed. Some key findings of the review are that effective sanitation in developing areas depends on the chain of services and that one of the largest problems in sanitation is FSM. This study presents the initial steps toward understanding the main issues involving FSM in developing cities of West Africa. Results are intended to be used as a support for decisions on policies, strategies for FSM, and investments for improved treatment facilities in the region. The study suggests that governments and private sector organizations should develop adequate measures for handling fecal sludge.

Sewage sludge (municipal, or industrial) treatment is still a problem in so far that it is not satisfactorily resolved in terms of cost and final disposal. Two common forms of sludge disposal are possible; the first being direct disposal on land (including agriculture) and the second being incineration (ash production), although neither of these methods are universally applied. Simplifying the issue, direct sludge disposal on land is seldom applied for sanitary and environmental reasons, while incineration is not popular for financial (high costs) reasons. Very often medium and large wastewater treatment plants apply anaerobic digestion for sludge hygiene principles, reducing the amount to be disposed and for biogas (energy) production. With the progress in sewage biological treatment aiming at nutrient removal, primary sludge has been omitted in the working processes and only surplus activated sludge requires handling. Anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS) is more difficult due to the presence of microorganisms, the decomposition of which requires a relatively long time for hydrolysis. In order to upgrade the hydrolysis effects, several different pre-treatment processes have already been developed and introduced. The additional pre-treatment processes applied are aimed at residual sludge bulk mass minimization, shortening of the anaerobic digestion process or higher biogas production, and therefore require additional energy. The water-energy-waste Nexus (treads of) of the benefits and operational difficulties, including energy costs are discussed in this paper. The intensity of pre-treatment processes to upgrade the microorganism’s hydrolysis has crucial implications. Here a low intensity pre-treatment process, alkalisation and hydrodynamic disintegration - hybrid process - were presented in order to achieve sufficient effects of WAS anaerobic digestion. A sludge digestion efficiency increase expressed as 45% biogas additional production and 52% of the total or volatile solids reduction has been confirmed.

The main objective of presented research work was the assessment of the impact of reduced straw content, as organic carbon source, on the course of sewage sludge composting process. During the research work performed in industrial conditions, the composting process going in periodically overturned windrows differing in proportion of dehydrated sludge, straw and structural material being 4:1:1 and 8:1:2 respectively, was observed. The consequence of increase of sludge concentration with relation to straw was decrease of C:N ratio in the input material from 11.5 to 8.5. The following parameters were analyzed as indicators for the assessment of the composting process: contents of fulvic acids (FA), humic acids (HA), lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose as well as absorbance in UV/VIS (λ=280, 465 and 665 nm) range. The results obtained have indicated that the increase of sludge content extends the elevated temperature (T>50°C) period from 42 days to approximately 65 days. Our tests did not confirm that limitation of straw content added to sewage sludge had any adverse effect on the course of composting. PI index (HA/FA), which qualifies the compost as mature in the first case – No 1, exceeds limit value of 3.6 on the 83rd day whereas, in the second case No 2, on the 48th day.

The effects of different volumetric ratios of bulking agents to pulp/paper-mill sludge on composting were studied. Rice husk and corncob were used as bulking agents. Volumetric ratios of bulking agents to pulp/paper-mill sludge were used as 10:100 and 25:100. To monitor the evolution of the composting systems, routine parameters such as temperature, moisture, pH, total N, NH4 +-N, NO3-N, total C, and C/N ratio were analyzed. The results indicated that the agro-based materials significantly affected compost maturity parameters. Moreover, the quality of the product obtained in the composting process treated with the agro-based materials achieved satisfactory stabilization and sanitation for application to land.

Opis:
Important factors affecting the effectiveness of microbiological degradation of chlorophenols include the presence of additional growth substrates, which ensure the accessibility of electron acceptors and electron donors, or the applied strains of microorganisms and their adaptation to pollution. Therefore an improvement of PCP degradation by the adaptation of activated sludge to PCP with phenol and glucose as cometabolites was examined. The activated sludge was adapted to 12 mg∙L-1 of PCP and to 200 mg∙L-1 of phenol, and then, the effect of the adaptation of activated sludge and the presence of additional sources of carbon and energy on the biodegradation of PCP and sorption properties were tested. The obtained results confirmed that the presence of additional sources of carbon and energy in the growth medium would improve the efficiency of PCP degradation. Among all analyzed types of research setups, the highest PCP degradation was noted in setups with phenol, regardless of the method of activated sludge adaptation or lack of adaptation. The biodegradation of PCP in the presence of glucose was less efficient than in the presence of phenol. The highest, 60% decrease in PCP concentration was obtained for activated sludge adapted to PCP in the presence of phenol.
Długotrwałe stosowanie pentachlorofenolu (PCP) spowodowało jego powszechne występowanie w środowisku. Ludzie mający stały kontakt z PCP narażeni są na choroby nowotworowe, uszkodzenia płodu, mutacje genetyczne, zaburzenia obrazu krwi, a także zmiany w układzie nerwowym. Ważnymi czynnikami wpływającymi na efektywność mikrobiologicznego rozkładu chlorofenoli są dodatkowe substraty wzrostowe zapewniające donory i akceptory elektronów, odpowiednie mikroorganizmy i ich adaptacja do rozkładanych związków. Z tego powodu oceniono wpływ adaptacji osadu czynnego do PCP i fenolu oraz glukozy i fenolu, jako dodatkowych substratów wzrostowych, na poprawę biodegradacji PCP. Osad czynny został zaadaptowany do 12 mg∙L-1 PCP i 200 mg∙L-1 fenolu, a następnie efekt adaptacji osadu czynnego i dodatku źródła węgla i energii na biodegradację i sorpcję PCP był badany. Uzyskane rezultaty potwierdziły, że obecność dodatkowego źródła węgla i energii w pożywce zwiększa efektywność usuwania PCP. Najwyższe, 60 procentowe usunięcie PCP uzyskano w zaadaptowanym do PCP osadzie czynnym w obecności fenolu jako substratu wzrostowego.

The article describes problems related to intensification of energy production at a sewage treatment plant. The authors analyze anaerobic co-digestion of sludge from a water treatment plant and sewage treatment plant. The authors proposed a methodology of the research and analyzed the preliminary results, which showed that co-digestion of sewage and water sludge enhanced biogas production. The authors hope that the results of the study will provide a basis for development of methodology for sludge control and disposal.
Badania zaprezentowane w niniejszej publikacji, prowadziły do określenia możliwości wykorzystania osadów z uzdatniania wody jako substrat w procesie fermentacji metanowej osadów ściekowych. Autorzy zaproponowali metodologię badań i przeanalizowali wstępne wyniki, które wykazały, że dodanie osadów z uzdatniania wody do osadów ściekowych spowodowało zwiększoną produkcję biogazu. Zaproponowana technologia stanowi zintegrowany system gospodarki komunalnej, oparty na współpracy dwóch przedsiębiorstw: oczyszczalni ścieków i stacji uzdatniania, działających w systemie gospodarki cyrkulacyjnej. Rezultatem takiego rozwiązania są korzyści w zakresie odzysku biogazu, możliwego do wykorzystania w procesie kogeneracji.

Opis:
The paper describes practical results of four-year laboratory studies completed to estimate technically feasible conditions of upgrading an existing sludge disposal system. A minimization of sludge mass and volume together with an energy recovery improvement were main goals of these activities. The way from lab studies and simulations to full scale investments has been shown with a special emphasis on application of respirometric procedure being applied by authors. Proposed was authors’ procedure for an estimation of a digestion time prediction for sludge of specific composition. Investigations completed at existing wastewater treatment plant resulted in practical implementation to be used during the design of upgrading and extension of the digestion and energy recovery system at the plant. It was proved that proposed changes provide close to optimum conditions for process performance and the application of proposed calculation procedures was adopted by design team.
Artykuł opisuje praktyczne wyniki trwających cztery lata badań laboratoryjnych ukierunkowanych na wyznaczenie technicznie wykonalnych zasad modernizacji istniejącego systemu przeróbki osadów. Podstawowymi zadaniami tych prac były minimalizacja masy i objętości osadu przy jednoczesnym zwiększeniu stopnia uzysku biogazu - nośnika energii. W artykule pokazano sposób przejścia od wyników badań laboratoryjnych i symulacyjnych do inwestycji pełnoskalowej przy czym autorzy szczególną uwagę poświęcili zastosowaniu testów respirometrycznych. Wynikiem prac aplikacyjnych jest zaproponowana procedura szacowania czasu fermentacji osadów w zależności od ich składu. Wyniki prac badawczych zostały zastosowane w procedurze projektowej modernizacji istniejącej oczyszczalni, czego rezultatem jest podniesienie efektywności systemu odzyskiwania energii w trakcie eksploatacji oczyszczalni. Wykazano tym samym, że proponowane zmiany pozwalają na wskazanie metod projektowania bardziej precyzyjnych niż obecnie stosowane metody wymiarowania komór.

The influence of sewage sludge torrefaction temperature on fuel properties was investigated. Non-lignocellulosic waste thermal treatment experiment was conducted within 1 h residence time, under the following temperatures: 200, 220, 240, 260, 280 and 300°C. Sawdust was used as lignocellulosic reference material. The following parameters of biochar have been measured: moisture, higher heating value, ash content, volatile compounds and sulfur content. Sawdust biochar has been confirmed to be a good quality solid fuel. High ash and sulfur content may be an obstacle for biochar energy reuse. The best temperature profile for sawdust torrefaction and fuel production for 1 h residence time was 220°C. At this temperature the product contained 84% of initial energy while decreased the mass by 25%. The best temperature profile for sewage sludge was 240°C. The energy residue was 91% and the mass residue was 85%. Higher temperatures in both cases caused excessive mass and energy losses.

This study is aimed at measuring the effect of pig, cow, horse and poultry manures on the degradation of selected Polycyclic Aromatics Hydrocarbons present in oil sludge. Four kilograms of soil amended with 1.2 kg of oil sludge was mixed with wood chips in a ratio of 1:2 (w:v) soil mixture: wood chips. The mixture was divided into five parts and four parts were separately mixed with pig, cow, horse or poultry manures in a ratio of 2:1 (w:w) and the fifth portion was used as the control with no manure added. All experiments were incubated for 10 months at room temperature. Compost piles were turned weekly for aeration and moisture level was maintained by adding deionised water enough to prevent the compost from getting dry. Moisture level, pH, temperature, CO2 evolution and oxygen consumption were measured monthly and the ash content of the compost at the end of experimentation. Highest temperature reached was 27.5°C in all compost heaps, pH ranged from 5.5 to 7.8 and CO2 evolution was highest in poultry manure at 18.78 μg/dwt/day. Microbial growth and activities were enhanced as indicated by increase in temperature, moisture level, pH value and respiration rate in all the compost piles. Bacteria capable of utilizing PAHs were isolated, purified and characterized by molecular techniques using polymerase chain reaction with specific universal primers and the amplicons were sequenced. Bacteria identified were Bacillus, Arthrobacter and Staphylococcus species. Percentage reduction in PAHs was measured using automated soxhlet extractor with Dichloromethane and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Results from PAH concentration measurements showed reduction of between 77% and 99%. Co-composting of contaminated soil with animal manures enhanced the reduction in PAHs.

Sewage sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plants is currently a serious environmental problem, given its diversity due to the variability of time and heavy metal content. Current research on the monitoring of heavy metals is based on the determination of Pb, Cd, Hg, Ni, Zn, Cu and Cr. This makes any thallium content data diffi cult to access. The study estimated the degree of contamination of sewage sludge with thallium. The sludge samples came from a sewage treatment plant located in Poland. The results are presented for the total concentration of thallium and its mobile forms. These samples were analyzed by diff erential pulse voltammetry. The results showed that the average thallium content was 0.203 μg/g and its mobile form was 0.025 μg/g. The conducted research shows that almost 13% of thallium from sewage sludge can be gradually released into the environment.
Osady ściekowe z komunalnych oczyszczalni ścieków stanowią poważny problem dla środowiska, biorąc pod uwagę ich różnorodność spowodowaną zmiennością czasu i zawartością metali ciężkich. Aktualne badania nad monitoringiem metali ciężkich opierają się na oznaczaniu Pb, Cd, Hg, Ni, Zn i Cr. To sprawia, że jakiekolwiek dane dotyczące zawartości talu są trudno dostępne. Próbki osadów analizowano za pomocą woltamperometrii impulsowej różnicowej. Wyniki wykazały, że średnia zawartość talu wynosiła 0,203 μg/g, a jego form mobilnych 0,025 μg/g. Z przeprowadzonych badań wynika, że prawie 13% Tl z osadów ściekowych może być stopniowo uwalniane do środowiska.

In the context of resource utilization, the applications of waste biomass have attracted increasing attention. Previous studies have shown that forming biochar by heat treatment of sludge could replace the traditional sludge disposal methods, and sludge biochar is proved to be efficient in wastewater treatment. In this work, the pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonization and microwave pyrolysis methods for preparing sludge biochar were reviewed, and the effects of different modification methods on the performance of sludge biochar in the synthesis process were comprehensively analyzed. This review also summarized the risk control of heavy metal leaching in sludge biochar, increasing the pyrolysis temperature and use of the fractional pyrolysis or co-pyrolysis were usually effectively meathods to reduce the leaching risk of heavy metal in the system, which is crucial for the wide application of sludge biochar in sewage treatment. At the same time, the adsorption mechanism of sludge biochar and the catalytic mechanism as the catalytic material in AOPs reaction, the process of radical and non-radical pathway and the possible impacts in the sludge biochar catalytic process were also analyzed in this paper.

Heavy metal pollutants in the leachate of waste landfill are a potential threat to the environment. In this study, the feasibility of using municipal sewage sludge as barrier material for the containment of heavy metal pollutants from solid waste landfills was evaluated by compaction test and hydraulic conductivity test concerning compaction property, impermeability and heavy metal retardation. Results of the compaction test showed that the maximum dry density of 0.79 g·cm−3 was achieved at the optimum water content of about 60%. The hydraulic conductivities of compacted sewage sludge permeated with synthetic heavy metal solutions were in the range of 1.3×10−8 – 6.2×10−9 cm·s−1, less than 1.0 ×10−−7cm·s−1 recommended by regulations for barrier materials. Chemical analyses on the effluent from the hydraulic conductivity tests indicated that the two target heavy metals, Zn and Cd in the permeants were all retarded by compacted sewage sludge, which might be attributed to the precipitation and adsorption of heavy metal ions. The results of this study suggest that specially prepared material from sewage sludge could be used as a barrier for waste landfills for its low permeability and strong retardation to heavy metal pollutants.

To test the potential harmfulness of soils fertilized with sludge-based products to plant organisms, a biotest method using the physiological/biochemical reaction of the organisms to assess their toxicity was chosen. This paper presents the results of a preliminary ecotoxicological study of different products: a sludge-based fertilizer, a plant growth promoter, and a reclamation blend. The study was conducted using Sinapis alba L., a plant used in agriculture for intercropping and recommended for toxicological testing. Toxicity tests were performed in a gradient of concentrations of the indicated products (2.5%, 5%, and 10%). For comparison purposes, a trial containing a commercial fertilizer was used alongside the control soil (without additives). The fertilizer and the crop support agent were of low toxicity, but data analysis indicated toxicity of the so-called reclamation blend, which contained heavy metals among other things. The test products showed an increase in toxicity with the increasing dose used. This research represents an important step in assessing the usefulness of products created from sewage sludge and may help overcome the „psychological barrier” that prevents potential investors from investing capital that would allow production to spread.
Porównanie różnych produktów powstałych na bazie komunalnych osadów ściekowych pod kątem potencjalnej ekotoksyczności. W celu sprawdzenia potencjalnej szkodliwości gleb nawożonych produktami po- wstałymi na bazie osadów ściekowych na organizmy roślinne posłużono się metodą biotestów – wykorzystano reakcję fizjologiczną/biochemiczną samych organizmów do oceny ich toksyczności. W niniejszej pracy przedsta- wiono wyniki wstępnych badań ekotoksykologicznych różnych produktów: powstałych na bazie osadów ścieko- wych: nawozu, środka wspomagającego wzrost roślin oraz mieszkanki rekultywacyjnej. Badania przeprowadzono z wykorzystaniem Sinapis alba L. – rośliny wykorzystywanej w rolnictwie do międzyplonów oraz zalecanej do wykonywania testów toksykologicznych. Testy toksyczności wykonano w gradiencie stężeń wskazanych produk- tów (2,5%, 5% oraz 10%). Dla celów porównawczych, obok gleby kontrolnej (bez dodatków) zastosowano także próbę zawierającą nawóz komercyjny. Nawóz i środek wspomagający uprawę roślin cechowały się niską toksycz- nością, analiza danych wskazała jednak na toksyczność tzw. mieszkanki rekultywacyjnej, zawierającej w swoim składzie m.in. metale ciężkie. Badane produkty wykazywały wzrost toksyczności wraz ze wzrostem zastosowanej dawki. Niniejsze badania stanowią ważny etap w ocenie przydatności produktów stworzonych na bazie osadów ściekowych i mogą być pomocne w pokonaniu „bariery psychologicznej” jaka powstrzymuje potencjalnych inwe- storów w lokacie kapitału, który pozwoliłby na upowszechnienie produkcji.

Remobilization of heavy metals from the bottom liner system due to the seepage of acid mine drainage (AMD) is an important concern in the long-term management of tailing impoundment. Titration tests were carried out to evaluate the acid buffering capacity (ABC) of sewage sludge and to investigate its effect on the remobilization of heavy metals. Test results demonstrate that the ABC increases with solid/liquid ratio and anaerobic incubation time and it is mainly attributed to the abundant organic matters contained and increasing carbonate loads. The added heavy metals (Zn, Pb, and Cu) were well immobilized during the anaerobic incubation stage but were released out dramatically during the acidification especially when pH drops below 6.0 because of dissolution of carbonates and cation exchange of clay minerals. The calculated results, from a simplified model, indicate that high levels of remobilization of heavy metals are not expected during the typical management time because of the high ABC of compacted sewage sludge barrier. These results support that sewage sludge is a suitable bottom liner material for the management of AMD from tailings.
