Opis:
One of the least expensive and safest diagnostic modalities routinely used is ultrasound imaging. An attractive development in this field is a two-dimensional (2D) matrix probe with three-dimensional (3D) imaging. The main problems to implement this probe come from a large number of elements they need to use. When the number of elements is reduced the side lobes arising from the transducer change along with the grating lobes that are linked to the periodic disposition of the elements. The grating lobes are reduced by placing the elements without any consideration of the grid. In this study, the Binary Bat Algorithm (BBA) is used to optimize the number of active elements in order to lower the side lobe level. The results are compared to other optimization methods to validate the proposed algorithm.

Reduction of the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) in multilevel inverters requires resolution of complex nonlinear transcendental equations; in this paper we propose a combination of one of the best existing optimized hardware structures with the recent firefly algorithm, which was used to optimize the THD, through finding the best switching angles and guaranteeing the minimization of harmonics within a user defined bandwidth. The obtained THD through the simulation of the thirteen-level symmetric inverter has been reduced down to 5% (FFT of 60 harmonics). In order to validate the simulation results, a thirteen-level symmetric inverter prototype has been made, and practically experimented and tested with different loads. Consequently, the measured THD with resistive load was 4.7% on a bandwidth of 3 kHz. The main advantage of the achieved work is the reduction of the THD.

The paper presents optimization of power line geometrical parameters aimed to reduce the intensity of the electric field and magnetic field intensity under an overhead power line with the use of a genetic algorithm (AG) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). The variation of charge distribution along the conductors as well as the sag of the overhead line and induced currents in earth wires were taken into account. The conductor sag was approximated by a chain curve. The charge simulation method (CSM) and the method of images were used in the simulations of an electric field, while a magnetic field were calculated using the Biot–Savart law. Sample calculations in a three-dimensional system were made for a 220 kV single – circuit power line. A comparison of the used optimization algorithms was made.

Opis:
Nowadays, the development of smart grids has been the focus of attention due to its advantages for power systems. One of the aspects of smart grids defined by using distributed generation (DG) in a low voltage network is a microgrid (MG). Based on its operational states, MG can operate in different configurations such as grid-connected mode or off-grid mode. The switching between these states is one of the challenging issues in this technical area. The fault currents in different buses have higher value compared to islanded mode of MG when the MG is connected to the main grid, which influences the protection equipment. In this situation, some electrical devices may be damaged due to the fault currents. Application of a fault current limiter (FCL) is considered as an effective way to overcome this challenge. The optimal size of these FCLs can optimize the performance of an MG. In this paper, an index for FCL size optimization has been used. In addition, two optimization algorithms (Bat Algorithm and Cuckoo Search Algorithm) have been applied to the problem. The application of an FCL has been studied in grid-connected and islanded-mode. In addition, the application of the capacitor bank in both modes has been investigated. The results of simulations carried out by MATLAB have been presented and compared.

Static Var Compensator (SVC) is a popular FACTS device for providing reactive power support in power systems and its placement representing the location and size has significant influence on network loss, while keeping the voltage magnitudes within the acceptable range. This paper presents a Firefly algorithm based optimization strategy for placement of SVC in power systems with a view of minimizing the transmission loss besides keeping the voltage magnitude within the acceptable range. The method uses a self-adaptive scheme for tuning the parameters in the Firefly algorithm. The strategy is tested on three IEEE test systems and their results are presented to demonstrate its effectiveness.

This paper presents the application of a recent meta-heuristic optimization technique named a crow search algorithm (CSA) in solving the problem of an optimal power flow (OPF) for electric power systems. Various constrained objective functions, total fuel cost, active power loss and pollutant emission are proposed. The generators’ output powers, generators’ terminal voltages, transmission lines’ taps and the shunt capacitors’ reactive powers are considered as variables to be designed. The proposed methodology based on the CSA is applied on an IEEE 30-bus system and IEEE 118-bus system. The obtained results via the CSA are compared to others and they ensure the superiority of the CSA in solving the OPF problem in electric power systems.

Economic Load Dispatch (ELD) is utilized in finding the optimal combination of the real power generation that minimizes total generation cost, yet satisfying all equality and inequality constraints. It plays a significant role in planning and operating power systems with several generating stations. For simplicity, the cost function of each generating unit has been approximated by a single quadratic function. ELD is a subproblem of unit commitment and a nonlinear optimization problem. Many soft computing optimization methods have been developed in the recent past to solve ELD problems. In this paper, the most recently developed population-based optimization called the Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA) has been utilized to solve the ELD problem. The results for the ELD problem have been verified by applying it to a standard 6-generator system with and without due consideration of transmission losses. The finally obtained results using the SSA are compared to that with the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. It has been observed that the obtained results using the SSA are quite encouraging.

Opis:
The multi-phase permanent-magnet machines with a fractional-slot concentratedwinding (FSCW) are a suitable choice for certain purposes like aircraft, marine, and electric vehicles, because of the fault tolerance and high power density capability. The paper aims to design, optimize and prototype a five-phase fractional-slot concentrated-winding surface-mounted permanent-magnet motor. To optimize the designed multi-phase motor a multi-objective optimization technique based on the genetic algorithm method is applied. The machine design objectives are to maximize torque density of the motor and maximize efficiency then to determine the best choice of the designed machine parameters. Then, the two-dimensional Finite Element Method (2D-FEM) is employed to verify the performance of the optimized machine. Finally, the optimized machine is prototyped. The paper found that the results of the prototyped machine validate the results of theatrical analyses of the machine and accurate consideration of the parameters improved the acting of the machine.

Opis:
In this paper, a novel bacterial foraging algorithm (BFA) based approach for robust and optimal design of PID controller connected to power system stabilizer (PSS) is proposed for damping low frequency power oscillations of a single machine infinite bus bar (SMIB) power system. This paper attempts to optimize three parameters (Kp, Ki, Kd) of PID-PSS based on foraging behaviour of Escherichia coli bacteria in human intestine. The problem of robustly selecting the parameters of the power system stabilizer is converted to an optimization problem which is solved by a bacterial foraging algorithm with a carefully selected objective function. The eigenvalue analysis and the simulation results obtained for internal and external disturbances for a wide range of operating conditions show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed BFAPSS. Further, the time domain simulation results when compared with those obtained using conventional PSS and Genetic Algorithm (GA) based PSS show the superiority of the proposed design.

This paper presents the results of the DFG-project (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) Q-ELF (“Qualitätsorientierter Methodenworkflow für die Produktneuentwicklung eines Linearantriebs in der Fördertechnik”) carried out in cooperation of the TU Dortmund University (support code KU 1307/12-1) with the BUW Wuppertal (support code WI 1234-11/1). The project continues the former project SFB 696 (Sonderforschungsbereich) regarding the Demand Compliant Design (DeCoDe) and the corresponding system model that strengthens the knowledge management to create high-quality mechatronical systems. In contrast to the SFB, which comprised the reverse engineering of a belt conveyor, Q-ELF applied a workflow of methods for quality oriented development on a new product. The DeCoDe ensures a methodical development that connects different engineering domains. This connection is important because the most problems and malfunctions arise at the interface of different domains due to their different notations for example. This approach also enables a methodical comparison of different competing concepts to pick the best suited one. A genetic algorithm is presented to further decrease the design-space. The project was carried out to develop linear drives for intralogistic systems.

Opis:
The growth in the system load accompanied by an increase of power loss in the distribution system. Distributed generation (DG) is an important identity in the electric power sector that substantially overcomes power loss and voltage drop problems when it is coordinated with a location and size properly. In this study, the DG integration into the network is optimally distributed by considering the load conditions in different load models used to surmount the impact of load growth. There are five load models tested namely constant, residential, industrial, commercial and mixed loads. The growth of the electrical load is modeled for the base year up to the fifth year as a short-term plan. Minimization of system power loss is taken as the main objective function considering voltage limits. Determination of the location and size of DG is optimally done by using the breeder genetic algorithm (BGA). The proposed studies were applied to the IEEE 30 radial distribution system with single and multiple placement DG scenarios. The results indicated that installing an optimal location and size DG could have a strong potential to reduce power loss and to secure future energy demand of load models. Also, commercial load requires the largest DG active injection power to maintain the voltage value within tolerable limits up to five years.

The method of phase correlation, presented in this article is free from this disadvantages. Due to the phase encoding with the use of Walsh functions the presented method allows to obtain better precision than previous methods. The algorithm to measure delay of the reflected wave with the use of microprocessor ARM Cortex M4 linked to a PC has been worked out and tested. This method uses the signal from the ultrasonic probe to precisely determine the time delay, caused by the propagation in medium, possible. In order to verify the effectiveness of the method a part of the measuring system was implemented in LabVIEW. Most receiving antenna arrays suffer from the mutual coupling problem between antenna elements, which can critically influence the performance of the array. In this work, a novel and accurate form of compensation matrix is applied to compensate the mutual coupling in a uniform linear array (ULA). This is achieved by applying a new method based on solving a boundary value problem for the whole ULA. In this method, both self and mutual impedances are exploited in an accurate characterization of mutual impedance matrix which results in a perfect mutual coupling compensation method, and hence a very accurate direction of arrival (DOA) estimation. In the new scheme, the compensation matrix is obtained by using the relationship between measured voltage and theoretical coupled voltage based on the MOM. Numerical results show that using DOA estimation algorithms to the decoupled voltage obtained by using this method leads to an excellent performance of DOA estimation with higher accuracy and resolution.

This paper proposes a methodology based on installation cost for locating the optimal position of interline power flow controller (IPFC) in a power system network. Here both conventional and non conventional optimization tools such as LR and ABC are applied. This methodology is formulated mathematically based on installation cost of the FACTS device and active power generation cost. The capability of IPFC to control the real and reactive power simultaneously in multiple transmission lines is exploited here. Apart from locating the optimal position of IPFC, this algorithm is used to find the optimal dispatch of the generating units and the optimal value of IPFC parameters. IPFC is modeled using Power Injection (PI) model and incorporated into the problem formulation. This proposed method is compared with that of conventional LR method by validating on standard test systems like 5-bus, IEEE 30-bus and IEEE 118-bus systems. A detailed discussion on power flow and voltage profile improvement is carried out which reveals that incorporating IPFC into power system network in its optimal location significantly enhance the load margin as well as the reliability of the system.
