Opis:
For centuries, surface water in various forms was an important feature of rural landscape. Villages were founded along streams, sometimes in the vicinity of reservoirs. In many villages there were large ponds or even systems of ponds, serving various functions and oftentimes connected with watercourses. Water-mills, with their streams and ponds, were a common and characteristic feature. Today, ponds have largely lost their practical function. Some serve as water tanks for fire-fighting purposes, others have fallen into disrepair, polluted and overgrown with weeds. Research has shown that over the last two decades the area occupied by standing water reservoirs has diminished considerably in most Lower Silesian villages. However, there are also positive tendencies. Garden owners are increasingly fond of pools, ponds, fountains, cascades and springs. In some villages efforts have been undertaken to save he old ponds with their unique ambience.

The article refers to the transformation of the villages of Środa Śląska commune: Ciechów, Rakoszyce and Szczepanów. Due to the presence of social infrastructure and services (such as shops, schools, health care facilities, libraries) they are the centers of the commune of Środa Śląska and develop faster than their neighboring village. The creation of this infrastructure was affected by the transformation of the villages belonging to the commune of Środa Śląska, which had place about 40 years ago and in which significant role was played by multi-family housing of the state farms. The villages Ciechów, Rakoszyce and Szczepanów may offer a better place of residence for less money, allowing people to own piece of land, to avoid the disadvantageous effects of population density, building intensity, standardization of construction, urban disorganization, as well as the high quality living environment – closeness to the nature, the elements of social infrastructure and services, availability of culture services, recreation places, etc.

A modern village is a place of many contrasts and conflicts. Apart from multiple social problems, like unemployment and dearth, there still accrue others which are connected with the change of village character following the entrance of Poland to the European Union. Frustration, which is created through the conflict between traditional understanding of the world by inhabitants of villages and requirements of the modern economy, often surpasses many people. To limit those disadvantageous occurrences which happen nowadays in so many regions, it is worth surveying closely the terrains of our villages, especially those which are often considered to be the least valuable. It is there where the unused potential of possibilities of development exists for many communes. Wastelands, because they are in question, can become a source of income and benefits, less calculable but also valuable. Agritourism is only one of the most popular examples in which to use wastelands. Others, less popular will also be described in the following article.

Opis:
With the moment of appearing the agricultural and food-processing industrial buildings in the village panorama among the country houses and buildings, new elements have come out to shape its character and cultural landscape. Among small sized country buildings and structures where the dominants were the sacral buildings, manors and groups of land farming buildings, the sub-dominants appeared in the form of grain mills, distilleries, sugar factories and other industrial buildings. Their prevailing position in the village panorama is due to their size and capacity, the material applied in their construction, and sometimes the elevation form. Apart from the technical elements (block, structure, material, and architectural form) a location of the given group of production unit was important. Weather the building is located within the country houses, in a farming buildings group, on the edge of the village, or in an independent location - it does significantly influence the way they are perceived. The clarity of the dominant or merely a characteristic silhouette of the industrial building is very distinct in the case of placing it in an open landscape. This factor is especially significant in the case of windmills. Commonly found in the end of the 19th century, windmills in the outskirts of towns and cities did not have any chance to survive in the succeeding decades. The competition from industrial mills and development of residential settlements cruelly and forcibly eliminated them from the suburban landscape. In the country areas these processes took place at a slightly slower pace, however, within the last 50-60 years also the windmills began to disappear quickly from the village landscape. Seeing the advancing degradation in diversification of the village landscape, it seems justifiable to draw attention to the need of protection of groups of production buildings, or more broadly - the protection of cultural landscape created by them. In this paper, the issue of occurrence of buildings of industrial function has been presented in the example of windmills located in the area of Przemęt, county of Wolsztyn. The mills' spatial unity with their surrounding has been presented along with their role in creation of historic image of the villages. The selected examples describe different forms of usage and conditions of preservation of these buildings.

Nowadays, while economical transformation is ongoing the image of the village is being changed. Factors that form conditions and quality of life should be transformed. The tool that enables realization is village renewal. This system is defined as a region's modernization and revitalization campaign. The issue of former consideration was mainly of a technical and formal aspect. Thus the main question of the taken analysis is the level of adaptation of "maturity" of the region to renewal process. The object of analyze is as follows: level of identification of inhabitants with a village with the site, degree of social integration, and social involvement in villages' problems. The variables function's dependence was specified and the range of continuity of function was identified - it is being interpreted as a point where actions of modernization of current tendency of the village development should be taken. It was proven that the set of actions should be a system that is known as a region's marketing.

Opis:
The article describes the infrastructure state in villages situated in the area of the so called the Eastern Wall. By mutual agreement "the Eastern Wall" is a border area, east of Białystok and runs south, along the border of the country. This area is a border region of the former Polish Republic Boundary, and definite Boundary of interwar Poland. In those days this area was described as "Poland B", backward, cut off from the world. The village did not posses any technical infrastructure at all. It did not have electricity, sanitary facilities but did have dismal roads - mostly dirt tracks and often, on wetlands, made with wooden deals. Currently villages posses electricity lines, the telecommunication system has been developed, and mobile telephony provides the possibility of common communication. The water mains network is developed irregularly, the situation with the sewer network is worse, but roads are mostly good. It is possible to state then that within the range of infrastructurethe needs of revitalization do not exist, simply, further development of this domain is needed. The problem of revitalization of Podlaskie villages, including "the Eastern Wall" without a doubt occursin domains of: culture, service and trade, which is socio-economical infrastructure. The future of this area will probably be tourism. Mainly it will be horseback, cycling and trekking tourism, and of course by car, but also resident tourism such as agri-tourism, especially in wood areas and at the lagoon. And in this particular area I can see the necessity for reviving native regional culture and the whole infrastructure and services connected with it.

Motorization development causes that more and more modern roads are being built. One can say that they often occupy the space of previous interesting types of old roads like f.e. those cobbled with fieldstones or with irregular granite flagstones, often with so called shoulde (wide sandy part along the road). They are usually copsed with trees, and create beautiful lanes. Their charm is sometimes appreciated and are covered by a legal protection, like in the case "Warcianka road" (between Murzynowo and two other villages: Warcin and Debin in Lubuskie wo-jwodshaft. There are also old roads-streets or small and narrow streets in the big cites. Some of them disappear (according authorities' decisions or by nature), other are carefully preserved f.e. Wysoka Street in Poznań.

The increasing of chaos of space between "city" and "nature" is not an episode, which we can to bide one`s time, and after than everything will return automatically to the former harmony. Instead of inventory of fleeting order we need the reinvention. A new concept for the economically balanced beauty, it is a task for the professional elites. That kind of invention can not be created by the public. It needs the effort of personality - not community. In consequence, one more work is needed - to transform the opinion of majority, according to the opinion represented by minority. In our democracy it is possible only by showing of the pecuniary profits coming from such an enterprise.

The function and role of a river in the rural landscape of Podhale were analysed on the example of the Biarka River. In the commune of Bukowina Tatrzariska, the river divides the area of Podhale and Polish Spisz. The villages of Brzegi, Jurgow, Czarna Gora and Biaika Tatrzariska are located on the river. The river has always been an element of life in the local community. Czarna Gora, in the vicinity of Bialka, is where Romany people live. The settlement is on a flood plain, close to the river, on the border between the vi 11 ages of Czarna Gora and Bukowina Tatrzahska. At present, the river is an important element in the development of tourism in Bialka Tatrzariska, especially in the summer season. The development of tourism is a threat to the natural environment and leads to increased pollution of the river. In order to preserve the precious ecosystem of the Biatka River, there are plans to create a "Biatka River" nature reserve. The natural biological lining accompanying the river is characterised by the presence of unique vegetation and is habitat for rare animal species. The Biatka River basin is located in Natura 2000 region, in a Special Protection Area (SPA).

Today the rural home landscape is filled with different types of content imprinted by the past centuries. The respect for material and non-material values through inherited cultural home landscapes manifest in understanding their essence. Remaining home landscape typical for the certain region and different from other lands are coming out of the tradition which is called 'genius loci' and is of non-material value. Our contemporary efforts to protect the significative layer of culture landscape cannot be limited only to protect its heritage forms but also its meaning of sense. That is a very significant task to give back the importance of the contents in the contemporary shaping process of the home landscape. Non-material values are eternal and their protection is the duty of modern societies. When those meanings are not fully valued or unconscious there's the duty for intellectual elites - architects and urban/landscape planners to act for changing this position. Prevention with protection and a meaningful layer of home landscape enrichment could not only bring emotional and intellectual value and satisfaction but real material benefits. Show-places and attractiveness improvement of certain places through significant modern architecture placement could be one of the methods of home landscape management influenced for quality of citizens' life. We cannot refuse leaving our 'footprints' if we cannot accept 'noone-land'. That processes has to be steered to a certain degree to imprint the most important points for local society. The architects equipped with the tools that help them to find important meanings in home architecture and cultural landscape would find the meaning of those values for protection and preservation because this type of information has to be as important as the technical, historical, ecological and sociological knowledge. The question is what the targets and directions in Polish rural landscape architecture are, for instance at the regeneration process. Surely it is not the uncritical respect for tradition, not only reservation protection and unrestricted architectural expression.

Opis:
Identification of the place in question is the most important issue for a village. There is nothing more confusing than an indistinction and chaotic pseudo-freedom which leads to the lack of orientation. One of the identifying elements both in the natural landscape and in their anthropogenic origin always were dominants. Their role in rural landscape is very important although not always appreciated, and in cases when it blemished the neighborhood, often underestimated. Traditional dominants in villages among others are: a church with a tower, often situated on a rise or in the highest place in a village, towers of distilleries, breweries or other production workshops in granges, water towers, towers of fire stations, windmills, former, brick tower transformer stations, chapels and side road crosses, single specimens of trees, whole farm sets, with remarkable, in comparison to the rest of the village, storage and farming buildings, mansions and palaces, former recreation halls distinguished by their size and arch castellated window openings, huge village ponds or empty squares in a village. The above mentioned not always are dominants. Everything depends on their surrounding which means that an element is receipted as a dominant and gives character both to the panorama and closed interiors. While situating objects where importance was to be stressed, terrain shape was used. Even a minor hill allowed a good exposition of a church, chapel or cross. Unfortunately, a new object with big cubature situated in a modern village most often takes into consideration only the functional needs of the users. Blocking vistas, dominants, gates or accents are the ideas which are avoided while designing, especially in rural areas. Impulsive actions can be noticed here, which answer only the needs of a moment. In fact it is difficult to find modern built objects in areas of a village which fulfill the expectations which were bestowed in dominants.

The topic of our consideration is the landscape of some border villages located in the Złote Mountains, in the eastern part of the region of Kłodzko. The chosen objects are desolate border villages, whose current state is not brought about by consequences of decrease in population, but the effect of displacement, resulting from political decisions made in the year 1945. Later attempts aiming at colonization were actions of short-lived duration, having no substantial importance. The research proved that a loss of balance, and sometimes decline in historically shaped balance occurred there, resulting from the weak, constructive activity of man. Its present effect is both a monothematic landscape, being the effect of natural processes domination (village Karpno), and also - still! - clear forms of arrangement of elements of cultural environment, combined with preservation of the specific form of the place canon - village Wrzosówka. The final problem, remaining for the reader to consider, is the following question: will the preservation of Wrzosówka,as a localization of recreational houses and sports infrastructure, allow to preserve, or maybe even enrich, the existing values of the cultural landscape?

The water is invariably connected with village landscape. Ponds appeared not only inside villages but also on their edges. They fulfilled utilitarian function, the inhabitants used to water the cattle in them and used them in case of a fire. The neighbourhood of water-courses and also existing water reservoirs was taken by location into consideration. Sometimes new ponds were created on the base of the rivers. They were located inside, on the edge of villages and also as an inseparable element of the parks close to manors and palaces. During the last century the number of water surfaces was considerably on the decrease, however at present people started to appreciate their value again. The former utilitarian function of the retainer water surfaces changed into decorative, recreational or fishing ones. It is alarming that ponds disappear gradually from the country area. The part of the neglected ones dry up because of the lowering of the level of the underground water, but a lot of ponds disappear because of the purposeful activity of man. In the place of the covered ponds new recreational areas arise or they are designed for building areas. At the same time they small ponds are placed on private properties, which confirms the natural needs of the people to commune with water. However, we may show a lot of the interesting examples of the development of water surfaces as regards both the landscape and the use. For the inhabitants of Pietna village in Krapkowice commune the existing ponds and the river are of the main value, which is the base for the new projects exhibiting the unique character of the village.

The character of small towns and villages is changing all the time. Former space assumes new functions and gains a new structure, which seems to be a natural consequence of spatial evolution. Such transformations are by no means anything new, not encountered previously, because the character of a given place has actually been shaped over the past centuries. Development of open areas is a desirable phenomenon, but it is even more essential how it is carried out. Over the past years, many investment projects for modernization and revitalization of rural areas have been executed in different regions of Poland and have brought about many benefits. Unfortunately, there have also been the ones which have caused damaging effects. In addition to some investment projects undertaken to improve infrastructure, transportation, communication or | social activities, there are more and more 'new' ideas for the management S of rural greens. Some fail to respect i the character, history and specific I features of a given place. This paper contains several examples of how green areas have been transformed f or new ones arranged in Polish villages. The author has analyzed rural structures and emphasized that it is necessary to refer to the regional identity whenever planning to revitalize such structures.
