Opis:
Public places in cities are spatial areas in which social interaction occurs. In these places, can or should there be privacy? A scientific approach has been applied to identify and evaluate different kinds of privacy in public places. After a review of the literature and conducted field work, spatial factors have been defined that describe and predict the existence of privacy in public places in various situations. The authors present selected features of public places that are conducive to a sense of privacy and describe the positive and negative aspects that can have an impact.

Opis:
Lasting relationships between settlements and water, especially a river, are characteristic of the majority of world cultures. Creation of the major ancient civilizations was closely connected with the existence of major rivers. When founding a city on a riverbank, the founders were above all guided by practical factors. Parallel to this the cult of the river developed. Along with the development of cities, composition and aesthetic roles of a river in a city became more important, especially in its central part, namely the city centre. River channels within cities underwent some changes. Along with the physical ones in the riverbed, a river was frequently "shifted" in a city plan to a down-town area. A river as a separation strip, area, or boundary, shapes both positive and negative components of a down-town landscape. A city centre river valley has the potential to create and model public areas, which form a positive image of a city in the users` minds. It may highlight its beauty or mitigate the imperfections of urbanized surroundings. The essential goal for those who contemporarily shape down-town river valleys is not to let a valley separate or negatively distinguish the areas situated on both its sides. Instead, it should create a friendly and human-oriented dow--town public area.

Opis:
Wide varieties of travelling make possible for landscape architects to run a visual comparison of physiognomic characteristics of various cities. On that base it was possible to notice that cities became similar. The result of such unification can be among others that watching a photographic documentary from the places we visited very often, we cannot recognize what city they present. The occurrence of physiognomic unification of city landscapes is an alarming signal for town planers, architects and landscape architects. Gradually cities lose what they had most precious - their landscape identity and character. Facing this physiognomic unification, which appears to be a process difficult to suppress, it is advisable to pay a greater attention to the sound and odour sphere of cities. The city, where the attempt of perceptive noticing and description of such occurrence was made, was Warsaw. Based on repeatedly executed observations, it can already be concluded that Warsaw as a city has lost a lot of its unique landscape identity. The occurrence of perception of Warsaw unification annihilates the great financial and medial strain with which the city's authorities sought to promote the capital and its tourist values. Simultaneously for the city inhabitants it can create an unwanted phenomenon which can in future result in the diminishing of local patriotism. There is no universal way to stop that occurrence. A lot depends on perceptivity and sensibility which landscape architects should manifest and their ability to use them during designing.

Opis:
Revitalization as a process of synchronized actions of specialists in various fields should cover many aspects of life. One of them is undoubtedly revalorization and regeneration of valuable urban spaces, which the material quality in recent years declined. Revalorization of urban interior matter - public space - streets and squares is one of the tools offering real hope for a revival of the area. Another tool has to be cultural, economic, social activation, etc. Synergistic action of the ideas, which are putting into effect, gives impulse to the actual revival of degraded urban areas. This article is an attempt to present the way of thinking about the revalorization of urban interiors on the example of the award-winning concept program- spatial assumptions of the Wałowy Plac in Gdańsk. The paper presents the issues of aestheticization of space, making readable of the urban interiors and regeneration of urban matter intertwining with themes of social activation and cultural revitalization. The urban landscape is treated here as a scene for "occurring" of life. Creating of public spaces is done on the basis of easily adaptable scenography to current needs. The urban landscape becomes by it a frame for the self-programming events.
