Opis:
In the article's third part, the author addresses issues related to urban renewal and challenges faced by landscape architects involved in the process. A number of examples and approaches are reviewed, closing with the presentation of the Hannover. City as Garden project. Realised under EXPO 2000, it has implemented in an exemplary manner the principal postulates set forth in the Green Charter of European Cities. Parks created in the exhibition area follow similar principles: the northern part (Kienast, Vogt & Partners, Zurich), arranged with an emphasis on artificiality, stresses human involvement in the shaping of landscape while the southern part (designed by Kamel Louafi, Berlin) is more natural and constitutes an important element in the green ring surrounding the city.

Opis:
The article presents the landscape transformations of chosen small towns of south-eastern Poland. The appearance of their main pointsmarket squares - yesterday and today has been shown. Old market places with traditional fairs have changed their functions within latter years and have been changing their appearance. The possibilities of bailout within the European Union programmes commenced the necessity for improving the image of towns in local societies. Town market squares are the places undergoing refurbishment. The accomplishments are not the best, containing similar elements of small architecture. Similar building materials, pavements, fountains, monuments and fashionable vegetation are dominant. Creating new paved spaces is also an excuse for removal of the already existing greenery, especially trees. Landscape identity of most of the presented market squares undergoes changes, which in turn impinges the landscape of the discussed small towns.

Opis:
The author discusses the relationship between the river and town-scape in the context of management studies, spatial and urban planning and architecture. The focus is on the town's location and layout in relation to the river. The author points to the existence of the "Great Divide" between the eastern and western European civilisations, located approximately between the drainage basins of the Odra and Vistula rivers, dividing Poland into two basic zones with respect to urban planning. Over the centuries, it has influenced the foundation and layout of towns and remains a factor in their current situation. In the western zone, that is in the Odra basin, the layout of towns reflects the centuries of German influence, with some Austrian, Bohemian and Hungarian flavour. As a rule, the river has been carefully arranged and integrated into the townscape (Wrocław, Opole, Koźle, Kłodzko, Bystrzyca, Lądek). In the east, rivers have been generally neglected but the configuration of land, with towns elevated on high escarpments, contributes the picturesque quality to the panorama (Wawel in Kraków, Sandomierz, Płock). Four basic types of the town-river relationship are discussed: a big city on a big river; a large city on a small river; a small town on a big river, and a small town on a small river. The case study of Janowiec, a small town on the Vistula river, historic but poor, is discussed. Local traditions defining the layout and architecture of towns in the context of their riverside location are an important component of native culture and national identity and are particularly relevant as Poland prepares to join the EU. The author advocates interdisciplinary co-operation between urban planners, architects, engineers, and landscape architects.

Opis:
Modern and future cities, as a basic place of habitation for most people, create a sociological, special and ecological problem. Around 1900 only 10% of people lived in them, currently this number reaches 50%, and after 2005, the inhabitants of cities will consist of 2/3rds of earth's population. Whole regions are subjected to further movement to cities and an increase in the number of city dwellers, especially in big cities, allowing the highest possibilities of finding work and social promotion. Extreme examples of giant cities are in South America, Asia or Africa. It seems that the 21st century will not bring revolutionary changes in the process of shaping and infrastructure of the cities. New cities will not be created, we will be solving old problems in old cities. And those basic problems will be a clean environment (air, water, soil, communication, contact with nature and a need for flats, in various proportions. Cities which offer an appropriate number of flats will have to modernize them, offering better and better living conditions, which means in developed and rich societies a healthy environment, contact with nature, good public transport and high esthetical values, but also the possibility of choice. All those actions can be carried out by various means. A discussion on the subject of directions of development of cities and at the same time the role of suburbs is not ended.

Opis:
Called "the cover of poverty" or "anti-decoration" by some and "artistic decoration" by others, murals have been inscribed in the landscape of almost all huge urban agglomerations of both Americas and Western Europe. The period of most dynamic development of various forms and techniques of murals occurred in the 1970s and 1980s. The fact that they can fulfill many substantial functions, such as informational, commercial, educational or become expressions of rebellion or identification of the inhabitants with the city, add to their impetuous development. Because of their scale, colour, symbolic and in many cases also artistic values, murals become distinctive landmarks in urban landscape. The article presents in an outline some aspects concerning context, form and function of modern murals.

Żyrardów is a model example of an industrial complex together with its administrative-social-tenement backup; carried out on the basis of perfectly measured conception both in respect of spatial setting and introduced architectural and functional solutions. The main factor which contributed to the inception of the town and its development was the foundation of the linen products factory. With time the whole settlement and modern infrastructure was built for its maintenance. In objects belonging to the factory there appears their clear variability in regard to the size of blocks and minuteness of architectural details. Żyrardów, intensively developed in the 19th century was one of very few worker's settlements in Poland, carried out according to the project of perfect cities. Currently the cultural sphere of works is undergoing degradation. To prevent progressive destruction it is advisable to formulate a revitalisation program - a plan of spatial development of the whole complex of former works. At the same time we have to remember the appropriate exploitation of the cultural sphere to preserve the antique character of the ideal composition and unique values of industrial architecture.

In the 20s and 30s of the previous century a trend to found recreation towns existed. These were separated settlement units around big cities. Clearly precised functioning - spatial rules for those sets created harmonious settlement units in the suburban zone of huge centres. At that time in the area of Łodź several of such places were found, on all main transport routes which led out of the city. The urbanization processes of the last few dozen years dimmed the boundary of the city, suburban zone and separate settlement units. City - gardens as former settlement units, surrounded by others, separate and accidental sets of summer houses, mansions and other types of buildings were lost in structures and connections.

The location of Frankfurt(O) and Slubice are determined by geographical coordinates: Longtitude 14: 5 E and Latitude 52: 3 N. The commune Slubice is placed between Pradolina Warszawsko-Berlinska and Pradolina Torunsko-Eberswaldzka, in Pojezierze Lubuskie, by the central Odra. The relief is diversified. To the south of Slubice the valley has a width of 1.5 km. However, it widens from the north of the town to 6 km. It is a flat area with a height of about 20 m above sea level. The Odra at this place narrows giving only one good crossing point. The first settlements were already in existence here in the fifth or fourth millennium B.C. As a result of the First World War Germany lost areas in Eastern Europe. After that, Frankfurt(O) had to engage Germans displaced from the East. National socialism and the Second World War led the metropolis beside the Odra to serious crisis; in April 1945 the old town was burned, Frankfurt(O) became a frontier town and the part located on the east side of the Odra was given to Poland as Slubice town. In the new political and territorial situation residents started the reconstruction and adaptation of towns for new needs. The border checkpoint quickly became the most important on the western border of Poland, the bridge blown up in wartime was rebuilt. Frankfurt was developing dynamically, the big population was growing, large housing estates with blocks of flats and modern office buildings were built. The fall of the Berlin Wall and demographic changes at the end of the 20th century caused regression of Frankfurt into a provincial town near Berlin, emigration of population unsettled the social balance. Slubice, the old part of Frankfurt(O), has urban form as a result of trade routes running for the western border. Very few architectural monuments were scattered and the town hadn`t any prestigious places, a centre like Market Square didn`t exist. Right before the towns there is the Odra buffer area located to protect against floods which have often occurred in recent years When water is draining off, the landscape is very unpleasant. The bank of the river has been developed, especially on the German side. However it hasn`t resulted in a considerable inflow of residents into boulevards. The deficiency in recreational usage of water resources and rather difficult access to them mean that the towns are isolated from the river. Boulevards, the riverside area and the part of the floodplain could be the place, where integration of common space would happen. And then big urban areas be connected through activation of small but important fragments. To make it possible, it`s very important to create communication channels for public transport, foot and bicycle paths. The main channels should be designed as view axis ended with natural landscape.

Opis:
Squares with parking places are inseparable spatial elements which co-create the landscape of big cities. Each city which concentrates a variety of public services, needs connectivity to parking places. Many characteristics such as the size of the place itself, introduced surface, lighting elements and most of all, appropriately chosen protective greenery decide if the parking place harmonizes well or badly with the landscape surrounding it. Apart from the decorative function it also plays the part of protection by minimalizing the negative sides of motorization. Most parking places in cities are situated in street-side parking areas. However, most terrain parking places in cities are concentrated on housing estates and squares of houses in streets. The larger sized car parks are situated near big shopping centers. Similar, but perhaps, not so big parking places are found adjacent to company buildings, offices and other establishments There are also big parking areas in cities near to railway or coach stations. In many cities parking places are built underground or in multi-storey buildings. Parking places for family cars, whilst perhaps not a city decoration, are a very distinctive and omnipresent accent of our epoque - time of motorization. Parking places can have a positive influence on a city's landscape as long as they are connected with an appropriate amount of decorative greenery. Aesthetics of parking places in Polish cities is very far from ideal. It can then become an interesting field for actions of creative landscape architects and communication architects.

One of the most important consequences of the design relating to human behavior is to facilitate or to discourage contacts between people. The method of shaping of the physical space can affect the way of the social space use. The concept of an interactional space corresponds to a holistic approach of place in which a set of spatial-physical attributes assisting social contacts in a particular location creates a appropriate situation for social contacts. The interactional nature of public spaces in the city is affected by several functional, structural and aesthetic factors of the environment. The presented paper describes these factors and shows on selected examples how they are used in the analysis of interactive features of public space.

Scope and subject-matter of the land revision enables to assert that both – new urban and cultural landscapes – are designed simultanously in The Netherlands. looking at transformed and artificial landscape of Holland, one can understand the need of its restoration or from the start design.
