Opis:: The intestinal helminth fauna of 201 specimens of Vulpes vulpes, captured in Galicia (northwest Spain), was investigated. Eight species were found: Toxocara canis (23% of host specimens), Toxocara cali (0.5%), Toxascaris leonina (1%), Uncinaria stenocephala (28%), Seuratascaris numidica (0.5%), Taenia crassiceps (23%), Mesocestoides litteralus (2.5%) and Dipylidium caninum (0.5%). We discuss possible relationships between human population density and the prevalence of infection of fox by intestinal helminths.

Opis:: Acanthocephalan Moniliformis moniliformis is a parasite of rodents, rarely also reported from carnivorous mammals. One female specimen of this parasite has been found in the small intestine of red fox Vulpes vulpes. It is the first report about this species invading the red fox in Poland.

Opis:: Introduction. In the Slovak Republic, trichinellosis circulates almost exclusively in the sylvatic cycle, with main reservoir host red fox and wild boar and sporadic occurrence of human outbreaks. A detailed study was performed in five ecologically different regions of eastern Slovakia with more profound regard to eco-geographical and anthropogenic influences to natural fox habitat. Material and methods. In total of 689 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) hunted in selected regions in 2005/2006 was examined using artificial digestion method. Larvae obtained from infected samples were on the species level characterised using multiplex PCR analysis. Results. The study revealed a total prevalence of 15.6%, with most frequent occurrence of infected foxes in the mountain of the Volovské Vrchy (25.2%) where both human habitation and fox population are very dense. High prevalence rates were found in the Košická Kotlina Basin (19.6%) with urbanised landscape, concentrated human activities and low fox population and in national park of the High Tatras (15.8%) where the inhabitants and fox population are relatively low. In the remote localities of the Nízke Beskydy Highlands that represent ideal fox habitat free of any human impact, 14.2% of foxes harboured Trichinella larvae. The lowest occurrence of infected foxes (6.9%) was found in agrarian areas of the Východoslovenská Nížina Lowland, with relatively low inhabitants and fox population density. In all localities Trichinella britovi was the most important etiological agent of sylvatic trichinellosis.

Opis:: During the year 1994-1997, a total number of 1042 red foxes orginating from the 33 provinces North-East, Central and South of Poland under special safety procautions for intestinal stages of Echinococcus multilocularis using the mucosal-smer technique were examined. An average of 5.09% (53 foxes) from 10 provinces was infected. In those provinces, the prevalance varied between 1.19% to 35.71%. The infection varied from low to very high but mostly harboured gravid E. multilocularis parasites with thick-shelled eggs. Our data indicate that E. multiocularis in foxes has a surprisingly wide distribution in Poland. These new epidemiological data indicate that a potential risk of infection for humans may exists in all areas where foxes infected with E. multilocularis have been identified. It has been assumed that E. multilocularis might also occur in other provinces in which foxes examination have not yet been undertaken or number examined of animals was low. Opis:: Two species of hookworms from genus Uncinaria have been found so far in Poland. Uncinaria stenocephala infects mainly dog, wolf and red fox, whereas Uncinaria criniformis is a parasite of mustelids (but it was also reported from red fox). 19 male and 29 female hookworms from red foxes have been compared with 10 male and 12 female worms from dogs. Hookworms from dogs were generally smaller than these from foxes, but no other morphological differences could be found. These hookworms were qualified to species Uncinaria stenocephala on the ground of morphology of male. Genomic DNA samples have been isolated from these hookworms and segments of rDNA including part of small subunit of ribosomal RNA gene; internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1); 5.8 S ribosomal RNA; internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) and part of large subunit of ribosomal RNA have been amplified and sequenced. Sequences from Uncinaria obtained both from foxes and dogs have shown very high similarity to the sequence of Uncinaria stenocephala, so all examined hookworms have been classified as belonging to this species.
