Opis:
This is a review article based on about 100 papers from leading world newspapers. The main features and the way of action of the snail's immune system are described. The mechanisms of discrimination between self and non-self are presented in detail, including characterization of interacting components of host (cellular and humoral factors) and parasite (a sporocyst surface) origin. The phenomena of molecular disguise and molecular mimicry are discussed in the context of the compatibility betweeen a host and a parasite. The possible ways of killing parasite are indicated, with special regard to production of reactive oxygen intermediates by hemocytes during the process of killing.

Opis:
Pulmonate and prosobranch snails, being necessary hosts for parthenogenetic generations of digenetic trematodes, participate in transmission of all trematodoses important from medical point of view. Role of particular gastropods in epidemiology of these diseases is discussed in details. Invasion of land snails and slugs is mainly passive by eggs containing developed miracidia, white enter ofthese larvae into snails inhabiting fresh-water environments is usually active. Generations in the snail host between miracidia and cercariae vary considerable, depending upon the fluke species. Generally, the cercaria is produced by the sporocyst or the redia. Cercariae usually actively penetrate out of the infected snail and enter water. Leaving out of account cases of encystation of cercariae in external environment (liver flukes of the family Fasciolidae) and active penetration into the final host (blood flukes of the family Schistosomatidae), encystation of these larvae takes place in the second intermediate host. Cercariae of medically important flukes may develop into metacercariae in tissues of fish (liver flukes - Opisthorchis felineus, Clonorchis sinensis, intestinal flukes - Heterophyes heterophyes, Metagonimus yokogawai, Troglotrema salmincola), as well as in crustaceans (pulmonary flukes of the genus Paragonimus), insects (the bipathogenic liver fluke Dicrocoelium dendriticum and other species of the family Plagiorchiidae incidentally found in man), and gastropods (flukes of the family Echinostomatidae, among them perhaps the best known is the Oriental species - Echinostoma ilocanum). In prevention and control of human trematodoses, especially in endemic foci, elimination of snail hosts is a great importance. Using molluscides may be objectionable from the stadpoint of environmental modification through their toxicity to other organisms. Biological control of snail hosts is more attractive. It includes introduction and management of predators, parasites, or pathogens, and intramolluscan competition. Moreover, certain slugs and terrestrial snails participate in transmission of nematode larval stages, including species known as pathogenic for man - the strongylid nematodes of the genus Angiostrongylus). Such infections may be prevented by abstanding from eating raw or inadequately cooked molluscs in endemic areas.

Opis:
During the years 1992-1993 terrestrial snails were examined to the infection with larvae of Protostrongylidae family in the South and North of Poland. Using compressor method 2267 terrestrial snails from two areas (Pszczyna and Iława) were examined. Collected gastropods belonged to the following species: Arion subfuscus (45 specimens), Bradybaena fruticum (9), Cepaea nemoralis (29), Succinea putris (2147), Zonitoides nitidus (37). Larvae of three species of Protostrongylidae family were found: Elaphostrongylus cervi, Varestrongylus sagittatus and V. capreoli. The highest extensiveness of invasion of Protostrongylidae was noticed in Succinea putris and reached 23,5% in one of plots in the Iława Forest District. The highest intensity of infection was found in S. putris and was as follows: E. cervi up to 150 larvae, V. sagittatus up to 41, and V. capreoli up to 132 larvae. Besides Z. nitidus (1 specimen) there were not noticed any larvae of Protostrongylidae in other species of terrestrial snails. Average extensiveness of invasion of Protostrongylidae in 1992 and 1993 amounted to 7,2 and 9,5% in Iława, and 13,9 and 9,4% in Pszczyna, respectively. The highest percentage of infested gastropods was noticed in June and July. Similar results were obtained in both biotopes examined.

Susceptibility of snails to infection with larvae of digenetic trematodes is determined by: degree of infectivity of a parasite race, causal ecological factors, and efficiency of defence reactions. In the article indications of resistance and immunity of these animals to such infections are presented, with regard to mechanisms of cellular and humoral forms of the immunological response. Some aspects of altered by a parasite dynamics of defence reactions of a host, like: occurrence of opportunistic infections (development of the immunological tolerance state for homo- and heterologous reinfections), adaptive immunity, and cases of survival of parasitic larvae in naturally resistant snails are discussed.

Opis:
Mechanism of pathogenesis of somatic gigantism of water snails infected with development stages of digenetic trematodes is a complex phenomenon. The manner of origination of these abnormalities is often dependent on accepted host-parasite relationship. In the article there are discussed essential foundations of hypotheses explaining snails' parasitological gigantism as a consequence of alterations in gonadal activity (e.g. the hypothesis of disturbances in energetic budget of a host) or of different aspects of the parasite effect on activity of the neurosecretory centres, involved in the control of somatic growth, as well as a possibility of production by parthenites some compounds, acting synergically with host's growth neurohormone.

In the article several models of pathogenesis of parasitic castration of snails infected with developmental stages of digenetic trematodes are presented. Some aspects of mechanical and chemical damage of the gonad and changes in tissues of this organ, caused by its starvation - developing as a consequence of competition between the host and its parasites, are discussed. Particular attention was paid to potential effect of the parasitic larvae on physiology of the hormonal system of the host.

The studies were conducted between 1999 and 2001 in two hunting regions. Larval alariosis was revealed in the boars only in one of the studied regions. In this region, the results of the parasitological studies, conducted towards A.alata in the direct host (domestic dogs) and indirect hosts (snails: Planorbis planorbis and Anisus vortex as well as frogs: Rana temporaria and Rana terrestris) were also positive. The lack of the host snails A.alata in the other region might have resulted from no presence of the parasite in the boar.

Ultrastructure of the digestive gland has been studied in G. truncatula, uninfected and infected with F. hepatica larvae. The digestive gland of G. truncatula consist of seccretory-resorption cells and calcareous cells. On the 20 day post infection the damage to the secretory cells were small and did not inhibit their activity. On the 60 day post infection the gland structure was totally altered: reduced height of secretory cells, lack of Golgi apparatus, myelin-like degradation of mitochondria, reduction and desintegrating of rough endoplasmic reticulum. These damage of secretory and calcareous cell to bring about a total inhibition of their secretory activities.

Opis:
Accumulation of zinc in epithelial cells of the digestive gland tubules of the freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis after subacute intoxication with zinc acetate (strong increasing doses of the metal in short period of time) was histochemically examined using dithizone. Large zinc granules observed in medial and basal parts of calcium cells permitted to conclude that this metal is binded in cytoplasm mainly on granules built of calcium and magnesium phosphate. There were no smaller concentrations of zinc, that would be indicative for metal binding with cytoplasmatic metallothionein-like proteins. In calcium cells of the digestive gland tubules of snails infected with digenean larvae accumulation of zinc was stronger, that would be an aspect of compensatory reaction.

Total protein and activities of: alpha-amylase, alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase in haemolymph of the freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis, naturally infected with digenean larvae were investigated. There were no any changes in these parameters in the snails infected with Cercaria tenuispina that occupies mainly haemocoel sinuses. Significant increase of activities of all examined enzymes in haemolymph of the snails infected with larvae belonging to the Furcocercariae group was ascertained. These changes were proportional to the degree of injury of the digestive gland, examined with the use of the thymol turbidity test. Total protein level was significantly higher only in haemolymph of snails with higher values of this test.

To supply more documentary evidence for the effect of parasitic infection on activity of neurosecretory centres in the cerebral ganglia of the snail host, caudo-dorsal and light green cells of adult individuals of Lymnaea stagnalis naturally infected with digenean parthenites were subjected to karyometric analysis. In infected animals significant enlargement of nuclear volumes of both examined types of neurosecretory cells was ascertained. Mean nuclear volume of the light green cells in snails infected with Furcocercariae was significantly lower in comparison with the individuals infected with parthenites from groups Echinostomata and Xiphidiocercariae. In remaining cases differences in nuclear volumes among subpopulations distinguished on the ground of an infection factor were not statistically significant.
