Opis:
Liver fluke Parafasciolopsis fasciolaemorpha is a parasite typical of elk (Alces alces). The present study describes the identification of a massive invasion of the liver fluke P. fasciolaemorpha in an elk in the Sobibór Landscape Park, Eastern Poland. In February 2016, samples of liver and faeces were collected from the elk during postmortem examination. A section of liver tissue and three grams of faeces were examined for the presence of flukes or fluke eggs by decantation. In total, 11,150 juvenile and mature flukes of P. fasciolaemorpha were found in the examined liver. Multiple cavities with distinct walls, filled with dark liquid, trematodes, fluke eggs and cellular detritus were seen in the cross section of the parenchyma. Additionally, some of the bile ducts were plugged with calcerous deposits. The three grams of examined faeces were found to contain 322 grey and golden-coloured eggs of P. fasciolaemorpha. The presence of such a massive infection of P. fasciolaemorpha in the examined elk has a significant impact on the health of the individual. We can assume P. fasciolaemorpha has a significant influence on the health and abundance of the entire elk population in Poland.

Opis:
Liver fluke Fascioloides magna is a typical parasite of American cervids. The reason for F. magna to appear in Poland territory was bringing the American wapiti deer to those forests around 1850. Along with these deer the aforementioned fluke was also introduced. The aim of this study was to present the case of finding of this species in cervids in Bory Zielonogórskie. Samples of deer feces were collected in February 2015 in Forest District Krzystkowice. A total of 16 samples of feces were examined, 7 of which came from the red deer, 4 from roe deer and 2 samples from fallow deer. Three grams of feces from each sample were examined for the presence of trematode eggs using the decantation method. Eggs of F. magna were detected in 2 of 7 examined samples from red deer, in the first sample it were found 3 eggs, and in the second one 46 eggs. Moreover, flukes eggs were found in 3 out of 4 roe deer faecal samples, in numbers of 1, 3 and 58 eggs respectively in each sample. Also, in faecal samples from two fallow deer were found in one of them 17 eggs F. magna. The results of this study extend the range of occurrence of the trematodes F. magna on the neighboring Lower Silesia Forest complex of Bory Zielonogórskie which are distant about 50 km. Fallow deer and roe deer were considered to be new in Poland definitive hosts of F. magna.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to compare the usefulness of FLOTAC and centrifugal fecal flotation (CFF) techniques. More specifically, the taxonomic classes (Nematoda and Cestoda) of endoparasites present in fecal samples of buffaloes are identified, the sensitivity and specificity of FLOTAC relative to CFF are calculated, and the agreement of both techniques is evaluated using Kappa statistics. Fresh fecal samples from 220 buffaloes in 10 municipalities were collected. Sheather’s sugar was used as a flotation solution for both the FLOTAC and CFF techniques. Of the 220 animals, 109 samples were nematode positive and 111 samples were nematode negative according to the FLOTAC technique, while 74 were found to be positive and 146 negative according to the CFF technique. No cestodes were detected by either technique. The calculated sensitivity for FLOTAC is 89.19% and its specificity is 70.55%. Kappa statistics revealed moderate agreement (k=0.535) between the two techniques in detecting nematodes. The prevalence observed based on FLOTAC and CFF test were 49.54% (109/220; 95% CI: 47.75–56.34) and 33.64% (72/220; 95% CI: 27.42–40.3), respectively.

Opis:
Malignant Ovine Theileriosis (MOT) caused by Theileria lestoquardi is considered a major constraint for sheep production in many areas of the world including Sudan. Pulmonary oedema is thought to be the main cause of animal death, but the mechanism, the cell types involved and/or the probable cause of this pneumonia has yet to be defined. The present study was carried out to investigate the pulmonary involvement post T. lestoquardi infection and to identify the cell types involved in pneumonia. Apparently healthy sheep were exposed to ticks challenge in T. lestoquardi endemic area. Lungs impression smears and tissue sections for histopathology were processed. At necropsy, fifteen infected sheep revealed severe pneumonia associated with oedema and accumulation of creamygrayish frothy exudates. The microscopic findings of examined lungs showed emphysema, congestion, collapse and proliferation of immense amount of different kinds of cells. The current study indicates that T. lestoquardi infections are accompanied with remarkable pulmonary involvements and may lead to respiratory failure and death.

Opis:
The epidemiological aspects of sheep piroplasmosis in Sudan are poorly studied, and further investigations using sensitive and precise techniques are required. In this study, the Reverse Line Blot (RLB) hybridization assay was used to detect and simultaneously differentiate between Theileria and Babesia species. DNA was extracted from blood collected on filter paper (n=219) from apparently healthy sheep from six different geographical localities in Sudan. Results indicated that Theileria ovis (88.6%), T. separata (20.1%), T. lestoquardi (16.4%) and T. annulata (16.4%) DNA could be detected in the blood samples. Single and mixed Theileria infections were detected in 74 (33.8%) and 124 (56.6%) respectively and T. ovis being the most prevalent species in the country. T. ovis and T. separata were reported for the first time in sheep in Sudan.
