Opis:
The purpose of research is to study the influence of plant mitogens and antigens of the water-salt extract from the bodies of Hirudo verbana, H. medicinalis, H. orientalis on the reaction of lymphocyte blast-transformation and the synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-8, TNF-α) in patients’ cell culture supernatants before and after hirudotherapy. Research methods: the reaction of lymphocyte blast-transformation; the determination of proinflammatory cytokines by ELISA. After hirudotherapy increased values of the reaction of lymphocyte blasttransformation have got bigger in all stimulated types of cell culture, but reactivity on medicinal leeches antigens proceeded to unproductive immunogenesis (apoptosis and necrosis). In supernatants of mitogen- and antigen-stimulated lymphocyte cultures induced high levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines after hirudotherapy have decreased adequately to apoptotic induction of lymphocytes by medicinal leeches’ antigens.

Opis:
It is analyzed morphofunctional features of Hirudo verbana tissues on histological sections in order to determine the possible causes of their partial death after hirudotherapeutic procedure. In the study was taken 4 groups of leeches: hungry (control), healthy well-fed, well-fed that vomited blood and well-fed dead. Morphofunctional changes in midgut of healthy well-fed H. verbana compared to the hungry are the changes of epithelium height through stretching eaten blood. In well-fed that vomited blood and well-fed dead leeches in the intestinal epithelium were observed degenerative processes that are accompanied by a decrease in the height of the epithelium, its partial desquamation. Botryoidal tissue of hungry leeches is in an inactive state, in healthy well-fed ones it responds with an increased physiological vascularization, activation of some botryoidal granulocytes with an increase in their average size, on receipt of the products of digestion. Activation of some botryoidal granulocytes, without a significant increase in their sizes, in well-fed leeches that vomited eaten blood and well-fed dead leeches, with increased infiltration of the adjacent connective tissue lymphocyte- and macrophage-like cells, amebocytes and granulocytes indicates the development of pathological processes, which are resulting in immunological conflict between eaten human blood and leeches’ tissue microenvironment.

We report this peculiar case of ocular cysticercosis with intermittent blindness which is never reported to our knowledge. This case highlights use of Ultrasound for examination of the posterior segment of eye globe. In limited facilities Ultrasound is the main modality to reach the diagnosis. We also wish to enforce the point that in endemic regions and in young population primary cysticercosis and its complications must be kept in differentials of cystic mass or calcified mass, as in this case, we have seen both the stages of cysticercosis progression.

Capillaria hepatica which accidentally infects humans is a zoonotic parasite of mammalian liver, primarily rodents and causes hepatic capillariasis. The diagnosis is difficult because of the non-specific nature of clinical symptoms, leading to misdiagnosis and can be confirmed only through liver biopsy or on autopsy results. This paper is written with an objective to report a new case of hepatic capillariasis as a rare differential for peripheral eosinophilia and an imaging dilemma for abdominal lymphadenopathy.

Opis:
On the basis of the data in the literature the authors discuss toxoplasmosis of cats. Next they describe the attempt to infect 4 cats with toxoplasmosis. The cats No. 1and 2 were infected subcutaneously with the strain MC - 12 (about 15 millions of toxoplasmas), the cat No. 3 was kept without infection from the cats No. 1 and 2, but the cat No. 4 was infected with the strain RH (about 15 millions of toxoplasmas) intraperitoneally. Clinical symptoms were observed only in the cats No. 1and 2, after 2 to 3 days they became saddened, lost appetite and became dull. In the cat No. 1 these symptoms retreated after 5 days, and the cat No. 2 died on the 8th day following the infection. Postmortem examinations revealed catarrhal inflammation of the lungs and alimentary tract. Biological tests (passages on mice) revealed the presence of the toxoplasmas. Serological tests in all the examined cats gave negative results.

Opis:
African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious viral disease of swine with a mortality rate approaching 100 percent. African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV) is a double-stranded DNA virus with a complex molecular structure. Its large genome, encoding multiple virulence factors, allows for efficient replication, which takes place predominantly in the cytoplasm of monocytes and macrophages. Also, ASFV has the ability to interfere with cell signalling pathways, which leads to various modulations in the synthesis profiles of interferon and other cytokines. Sustained viremia favours the persistence of virions in blood and tissues of the convalescents, and the extended circulation of ASFV within the herd. ASFV has been spreading in the Caucasus since 2007, and in 2014 reached the eastern territory of the European Union. Outbreaks pose an economical threat to native pig rearing, especially since a single point source may easily develop into an epizootic event. There is currently no effective vaccine nor treatment for ASF, and eradication is possible only by prevention or the slaughter of diseased animals. This review paper summarizes the current state of knowledge about ASFV.

Opis:
Liver fluke Parafasciolopsis fasciolaemorpha is a parasite typical of elk (Alces alces). The present study describes the identification of a massive invasion of the liver fluke P. fasciolaemorpha in an elk in the Sobibór Landscape Park, Eastern Poland. In February 2016, samples of liver and faeces were collected from the elk during postmortem examination. A section of liver tissue and three grams of faeces were examined for the presence of flukes or fluke eggs by decantation. In total, 11,150 juvenile and mature flukes of P. fasciolaemorpha were found in the examined liver. Multiple cavities with distinct walls, filled with dark liquid, trematodes, fluke eggs and cellular detritus were seen in the cross section of the parenchyma. Additionally, some of the bile ducts were plugged with calcerous deposits. The three grams of examined faeces were found to contain 322 grey and golden-coloured eggs of P. fasciolaemorpha. The presence of such a massive infection of P. fasciolaemorpha in the examined elk has a significant impact on the health of the individual. We can assume P. fasciolaemorpha has a significant influence on the health and abundance of the entire elk population in Poland.

Opis:
Malignant Ovine Theileriosis (MOT) caused by Theileria lestoquardi is considered a major constraint for sheep production in many areas of the world including Sudan. Pulmonary oedema is thought to be the main cause of animal death, but the mechanism, the cell types involved and/or the probable cause of this pneumonia has yet to be defined. The present study was carried out to investigate the pulmonary involvement post T. lestoquardi infection and to identify the cell types involved in pneumonia. Apparently healthy sheep were exposed to ticks challenge in T. lestoquardi endemic area. Lungs impression smears and tissue sections for histopathology were processed. At necropsy, fifteen infected sheep revealed severe pneumonia associated with oedema and accumulation of creamygrayish frothy exudates. The microscopic findings of examined lungs showed emphysema, congestion, collapse and proliferation of immense amount of different kinds of cells. The current study indicates that T. lestoquardi infections are accompanied with remarkable pulmonary involvements and may lead to respiratory failure and death.
