Opis:
Introduction and objectives. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is long life disease that results from an interaction between a polygenetic predisposition and environmental factors, including smoking. The aim of this study was to evaluate beliefs about and awareness of smoking among adolescents with IBD compared to healthy controls. Materials and method. Patients with IBD, Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), and healthy controls were asked to complete a questionnaire on demographic data and smoking status. The questionnaire also included data on beliefs and awareness of smoking-related health effects, including effects on IBD. Results. A total of 139 IBD patients and 108 controls were enrolled in the study. Of the IBD patients, 17/139 (12.2%) were smokers compared to 18/108 (16.7%) of controls (p=0.3). Patients with IBD were nine times more likely to be everyday smokers than occasional smokers (OR=9.2, 95% CI: 1.9- 45.1, p=0.004). No difference was found between patients with CD and UC in their answers to the question of whether “smoking increases the risk for surgery in your type of IBD” (17/28 (60.7%) vs. 10/29 (34.5%), respectively (p=0.047). More patients with CD than UC were aware of the risks of smoking on their disease: extra-intestinal manifestations and disease exacerbation, OR=11.3 (95% CI: 4.1 – 30.9; p=0.000) and OR=19.3 (95% CI: 6.7 – 55.1; p=0.000), respectively. Conclusions. The data obtained demonstrated that adolescents with CD are much more aware of the role of smoking on CD than are their peers with UC; however, this awareness is still unsatisfactory. Therefore, there is an unmet need to implement better anti-smoking strategies for this group of patients.

Opis:
Introduction. Alcohol consumption is the world’s third largest risk factor for disease and disability. According to the WHO report from 2011: 71% of urban respondents ty and 77% of rural respondents admit to alcohol consumption]. Lower socio-economic status and educational levels result in a greater risk of alcohol-related injury, disease and death. Alcohol is a common component of many medicines, as well as an ingredient in many oral hygiene home products. Mouthwashes containing alcohol are considered to inhibit wound healing in the oral cavity. Due to the fact that many different results are described for different concentrations of alcohol at different times, an attemptwas made to visualise the direct impact of 7.2% and 22% alcohol on human gingival fibroblasts. Materials and method. PANsystem 2000 was used for visualisation of the reaction of human gingival fibroblasts isolated from gingiva on ethanol in 2 different concentrations. PANsys 3000 is a multi-system fully-automated cell culture device used for in vitro culture and to study a variety of cell lines under conditions similar to in vivo. Observations were carried out for 48 hours since alcohol addition. Pictures were taken in a continuous process at 5 minute intervalds and combined into a film. Results. Both contamination of 7.2% and 22% ethyl alcohol negatively affected morphology and cell proliferation. Addition of ethanol at a concentration 7.2% enabled cells to regain their ability to divide and recover normal morphology after 10 hours; changes caused by 22% ethanol, however, were irreversible. Conclusions. The obtained results suggest that daily usage of 7.2% alcohol contained in mouthwashes is non-toxic for gingival fibroblasts, and could be recommended after periodontal surgery.

Opis:
Introduction. E-Health tools allow a medical facility to set a given patient’s data in order using ICT techniques, and the patient to use those techniques when contacting a given organisation. Materials and method. Secondary statistical data was used in the research. The study was carried out among primary health care patients. Mining for affinity rules was done in the R programme. The apriori and inspect functions from the arules package were used. Moreover, any redundant rules were removed from thoseobtained using the afero-mentioned method. Applying the general description of the affinity analysis method onto the survey described herein, it should be stressed that the aim of using affinity analysis was to discover the rules which contain the sub-transaction B={V_6=1} as a consequent. This was determined by the intention to discover associations regarding the knowledge about a uniform information system that the patients under study might have. Results. In the discovered rules, the antecedent most often contained an indication of the need for introducing a uniform solution as regards telemedicine. Moreover, according to the opinions of ‚conscious‘patients, a uniform IT system should improve the work at primary health care institutions, introducing an on-line booking system for visits should improve the productivity and comfort of doctors, and an IT system should provide unambiguous identification of a patient. Conclusions. There is potential in using affinity analysis within e-Health. The example of affinity analysis described in his study led to the discovery of interesting and important (from the point of view of a medical facility) regularities regarding the knowledge and expectations of patients as regards e-Health.

Opis:
Introduction and objective: The developing brain of a child is extremely prone to damage resulting from exposure to harmful environmental factors, e.g. heavy metals. Intoxication of children’s organisms with lead and cadmium affects their intellectual development. Even a relatively small amount of this metal in children’s blood can lead to developmental dysfunctions. The aim of this study was to analyse the correlation between blood lead and cadmium levels in children with behaviour disorders and their functioning in the home. Material and methods: This survey-based study was conducted among 78 families with children diagnosed as having behaviour disorders. It was performed using the ADHD-Rating Scale-IV. To determine lead and cadmium levels the laboratory procedure was based on Stoppler and Brandt’s method. Results: The mean blood lead level was 19.71 μg/l and the mean blood cadmium level was 0.215μg/l. Higher blood lead levels in children correlates positively with incidences of hyperactive and impulsive behaviour in the home, as assessed by parents (p=0.048). Statistically significant effects of cadmium on children’s behaviour were not noticed. Conclusions: The effect of lead on the developing organism of a child has such behavioural consequences as attention disorders, hyperactivity and impulsive behaviour which, in turn, may interfere with children’s functioning in the home. A negative effect of cadmium on the functioning of children with behaviour disorders in the home was not proved.
