Opis:
Despite urbanization of contemporary society and limitation on the environmental areas, the threat of animal attacks on people is still an important social and medical problem. Although they usually do not have serious consequences, they are nevertheless disturbing and alarming enough to make people seek professional, medical help. The aim of this study was to estimate the epidemiology and the risk rate of animal related injuries in the urban and rural population, as well as to select the characteristics of such injuries, which are distinguishable from injuries caused by other factors. The work presents a retrospective analysis of the medical records of 1,872 patients treated at the Department of Trauma and Emergency Department between 2001-2004, who suffered from animal related injuries. Our analysis led to the following conclusions: Most animal related injuries, reported to doctors, are mild injuries. The threat of animal attack is similar in urban and in rural areas, and concerns mostly men between the ages of 22-40. Injuries caused by large animals, such as a horse or a cow, require hospitalization and should be considered as high-energy injuries. The vast majority were patients who after the treatment could return to their social and occupational activities; the mortality rate in hospitalized patients with animal related injuries was higher then in other injuries, but the difference was statistically irrelevant.

Opis:
The microbiological colonisation of buildings and man-made structures often occurs on the walls of plumbing systems; therefore, monitoring of opportunistic pathogens such as Legionella pneumophila (L. pneumophila), both in water distribution mains and in consumers’ plumbing systems, is an important issue according to the international and national guidelines that regulate the quality of drinking water. This paper investigates the presence of L. pneumophila in the Dalmatian County of Croatia and the relationship between L. pneumophila presence and heavy metals concentrations, free residual chlorine and water temperature in hot water distribution systems (WDS). Investigations were performed on a large number of hot water samples taken from taps in kitchens and bathrooms in hotels and homes for the elderly and disabled in the Split region. Of the 127 hot water samples examined, 12 (9.4%) were positive for Legionella spp. with median values concentration of 450 cfu × L-1. Among positive isolates, 10 (83.3%) were L. pneumophila sg 1, and two of them (16.6%) belonged to the genera L. pneumophila sg 2–14. The positive correlation between the water temperature, iron and manganese concentrations, and L. pneumophila contamination was proved by statistical analysis of the experimental data. On the contrary, zinc and free residual chlorine had no observed influence on the presence of L. pneumophila. The presence of heavy metals in water samples confirms the corrosion of distribution system pipes and fittings, and suggests that metal plumbing components and associated corrosion products are important factors in the survival and growth of L. pneumophila in WDS.

Opis:
Air samples were collected on glass fi bre fi lters in 22 animal houses and 3 hay storage barns and examined for the presence of bacterial endotoxin with the Limulus (LAL) test and the gas chromatography – tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MSMS) technique, based on detection of 3-hydroxy fatty acids (3-OH-FAs) as chemical markers of the endotoxin lipopolysaccharide. The median concentrations of airborne endotoxin determined with LAL test in poultry houses, sheep sheds, piggeries, cow barns, and horse stables were respectively 62.49 μg/m3, 26.2 μg/m3, 3.8 μg/m3, 1.65 μg/m3, and 1.14 μg/m3, while those determined with the GC-MSMS technique were respectively 1.06 μg/m3, 7.91 μg/m3, 0.2 μg/m3, 0.31 μg/m3, and 1.42 μg/m3. The median concentrations of airborne endotoxin determined with LAL test and GC-MSMS technique in hay storage barns were much smaller, 0.09 μg/m3 and 0.03 μg/m3, respectively. The concentrations of airborne endotoxin (LPS) detected with GC-MSMS method in the air of sheep sheds were signifi cantly greater than in all other examined facilities, while those detected in hay storage barns were signifi cantly smaller than in all other examined facilities (p<0.05). The concentrations of airborne endotoxin determined with LAL test and GC-MSMS analysis exceeded in most of animal houses examined (91% by each method) the threshold limit value for airborne endotoxin of 0.1 μg/m3 proposed by various authors. A signifi cant correlation (p<0.05) between the concentrations of endotoxin determined with the LAL and GC-MSMS techniques was found in the air samples collected in poultry houses and sheep sheds, but not in other examined facilities. 3-OH FAs with C14-C18 chains were predominant in the air of the facilities under study. A signifi cant correlation (p<0.05) was found between the concentrations of endotoxin determined with LAL test and the amounts of 3-OH FAs with C14-C16 chains. In conclusion, endotoxin in the concentrations detected in this study may present a respiratory hazard to both humans and livestock animals.

Opis:
Solec Spa is health resort in south-eastern Poland. Its unique balneorehabilitation significance worldwide is determined by chloride-iodine-sodium water with a high content of hydrogen sulphide. This water, classified as highly mineralized sodiumchloride (seltzer) sulphide, bromide, iodide, boron water, contains naturally approximately 0.9 g/l divalent sulphur compounds, which is the highest concentration noted among the mineral waters of the world. The effectiveness of the Solec waters is proven in: inflammatory and autoimmunological locomotor system diseases, degenerative joint disorders (osteoarthritis), post-traumatic and post-operative orthopedic diseases, skin diseases and allergic disorders. One of the main indications for balneotherapy in Solec Spa and Busko Spa is chronic brucellosis.
