Opis:
Pollen concentration in the atmosphere of Vinkovci (northeastern Croatia) has been analyzed using a Hirst-type volumetric spore trap. During the year 2005, 58 pollen types were recorded with the sum of annual totals of 14,011. The pollen spectrum refl ected the fl oristic diversity of the region. Non-arboreal pollen predominantly contributed to the total pollen sum with a percentage of 81.80%. The main pollen producers characterized by allergenic pollen were: Betula, Quercus, Fraxinus, Populus, Pinus, Urticaceae, Ambrosia, Poaceae, Plantago and Artemisia. Urticaceae was the most frequent and most abundant pollen type accounting for 46.58% of the total annual pollen, followed by Ambrosia (19.66%) and Poaceae (11.01%).

Objective. To examine disparities in access to the public in Poland, in association of the resources of health care, socioeconomic development of Provinces and their level of urbanization. Materials and method. The Provinces were divided into four groups, using the quartile method, according to the urbanization and level of socio-economic development. The socio-economic development level was identified by the Human Development Index (HDI) for each Province. The urbanization level of each Province was determined by the Index of Urbanization (URBI). Disparities level to access to public health care was identified by taxonomic measure of accessibility (TMA), calculated using resources of health care data. TMA index was compared in the different regions, depending on the level of HDI and URBI. Results. There was no linear relationship between accessibility to public healthcare and socio-economic development of each tested region, nor between accessibility to public health care in the Provinces and their urbanization level. During the study, the correlation between the TMA and HDI and URBI alsdo produced a negative result. Conclusions. An insufficient number of physicians and the limited value of contracts within the public health service may cause a drop in the availability of the public medical service sector, regardless of regional level of urbanization and socioeconomic development.

Opis:
The use of veterinary medicines and medicated feed has a potential for the exposure of agricultural workers to pharmaceuticals with phototoxic and photoallergic sideeffects. We present a 67-year-old self-employed farmer and pig breeder with a 22-year history of severe persistent photosensitivity following photoallergic contact dermatitis due to direct occupational dermal and airborne contact to chlorpromazine (sedative) and olaquindox (antibiotic and animal growth promoter, AGP). His fi rst dermatitis symptoms appeared at the age of 45 when the pig breeding was intensifi ed. He showed erythematous, scaly, and pruritic plaques localized symmetrically on the sun-exposed backs of his hands, fi ngers, and forearms, spreading to his face and other sun-exposed body sites. Without protective measures, he injected the animals with chlorpromazine. Besides, for several years he mixed by hand a powder containing olaquindox into the pigs’ dry food. Epicutaneous and photo-patch tests showed positive reactions to promethazine, chlorpromazine, and olaquindox. In spite of the complete avoidance of the identifi ed photoallergens for several years, his life is still extremely disabled due to the persistent photosensitivity. Our case report stresses the observation that olaquindox and chlorpromazine as phototoxic agents and photoallergens are capable of inducing a persistent and severe photosensitivity for many years, even after termination of exposure. Although the use of phenothiazine derivates and APGs for animals has meanwhile been banned in the European Union (EU), AGPs are still widely used in Asia. Physicians, especially occupational physicians, should be still aware of these phototoxic and photoallergic agents to reduce the burden of skin disease at work.

Opis:
The influence of the type of farming on harmful gas exposures to carbon dioxide (CO2), ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) was assessed from the perspective of animal welfare and occupational hygiene. Summer data of H2S, NH3 and CO2 concentrations and of environmental parameters were collected from 31 farms. The indices of exposure for longterm exposures to NH3 suggest the lowest acceptability of exposure was observed on poultry farms. CO2 had the highest dependence on production activity. For H2S, no differences were found based on farming activity. Both the stocking density and volume of air available affected the daily exposure and the index of exposure to CO2. Significant differences were observed between hourly CO2 concentrations, depending on the level of activity inside the building. A positive correlation was found between gas concentrations and temperature increase. All values of daily and short-term exposures were below exposure limit values, which suggests that exposure conditions were appropriate for workers’ health during the measurement period. Analysis of the working hours and average hourly concentration of gases during the times of day, with presence of workers inside the farm buildings, revealed significant differences for CO2.

Introduction. Quality of Life (QoL) of Polish women and men with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) was analyzed, taking into consideration acceptance of the illness, the occurrence of depression, complications of diabetes, concentration of glycated haemoglobin, and demographic factors. Materials and method. The study was conducted among 115 patients with T1DM and 215 patients with T2DM aged 18–60. The patients were divided into women and men. The tool applied for studying QoL was the Polish language version of the Audit of diabetes-dependent QoL questionnaire(ADDQoL) comprising 2 questions related to the general QoL and 19 domains related to aspects of life. Each domain included 2 components: Impact and Importance, and their product determined the value of the weighted impact score. The Acceptance of Illness Scale, Beck Depression Inventory and studied demographic and clinical parameters were also applied. Results. Patients with both types of diabetes demonstrated a negative influence of the disease in all domains of ADDQoL. Values of the average weighted impact of ADDQoL showed significant associations with diabetic complications in T1DM and gender and depressive symptoms in T2DM. Diabetes negatively affects the QoL of diabetic patients in Poland, especially regarding freedom to eat and to drink and sex life in both genders in T1DM, and freedom to eat and drink, and feelings about the future in both genders, and working life and sex life in T2DM men. Conclusions. Risk factors for worse QoL are: the occurrence of diabetes complications in T1DM patients and male gender and depression in T2DM patients.

Opis:
Introduction. Employees performing work underground in coal mines are exposed to the effect of many hazardous factors in their work environment which negatively affect their health. Objective. The objective of the study was to recognize the opinions of employes working underground in one of the coal mines concerning the occurrence of factors hazardous for health in their work environment. Materials and method. The study was conducted in a group of 700 persons working underground in the ‘Bogdanka’ coal mine in Łęczna (Eastern Poland). The study was carried out using a questionnaire. The results were statistically analyzed using software STATISTICA v. 7.1. Results. The vast majority of respondents (approximately 80%) reported that noise and dustiness at their workplace create risk for their health. More than a half of them mentioned that the microclimate in the mine threatens their health (high humidity and high temperature), and a half of respondents indicated vibration and poor lighting. The greatest differences of opinions concerning the effect of hazardous factors on health of persons employed in the mine were observed in the sub-groups distinguished according to the work position. Health risk at a workplace was most often identified by those employed as miners. Conclusions. Among actions reducing the negative effect of the work environment on health is the introduction of new, safer technologies of coal mining. Also, the human factor is very important for work safety in mining, including the proper preparation of employees who undertake work in a mine. It is recommended that new, more effective educational programmes are implemented in the area of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) at workplaces.
