Opis:
Introduction. Performance of work is related with experiencing various emotions, from positive – indicating full satisfaction with work, to negative – describing failures, and even harm caused by work. Such emotions are also experienced by children engaged in work on family farms. Objective. The objective of the study is the determination of emotions experienced in association with performing agricultural work in childhood, and indication of the factors conditioning the occurrence of positive and negative emotions. Materials and Method. The study was conducted by the method of a diagnostic survey using a questionnaire technique, and covered a group of 482 adults from agricultural families. Results. In childhood, positive emotions related with the performance of work are more often experienced than negative emotions. The occurrence of positive emotions is positively related with willingness to perform work activities, working time, respondent’s age, age at which a child started to perform work, and age at which a child discontinued helping on a farm. The occurrence of negative emotions is positively related with unwillingness to perform work, performing work activities beyond the physical capabilities of a child, neglecting school duties, missing classes at school due to work, and with working time. Conclusion. With work performed in childhood are associated positive and negative emotions experienced in childhood and adulthood. The performance of work in childhood shapes emotions experienced by an adult which may affect his/her quality of life and functioning in adulthood.

Opis:
A considerable percentage of Polish children from agricultural families are engaged by their parents in performing work activities on farms. The performance of these tasks arouses various emotional reactions in children, from the feeling of threat, fear and anxiety, to the feeling of satisfaction, being contented and proud. The subjective feeling of happiness and life satisfaction is an extremely important factor affecting the mental health and functioning of a human being. The objective of the study was to show to what extent the quality of communication between children and parents, and the level of family cohesion and adaptability according to the Circumplex Model by D. H. Olson et al., modifi es children’s emotional reactions associated with the tasks performed. The study covered 192 children aged 12-13, whose parents were running a family farm. Growing up in a healthy family characterised by a balanced level of cohesion, adaptability and good communication with the father and mother, favours the occurrence in children of pleasant emotions in reaction to work which they undertake on behalf of their parents on a farm. In such families, more often than in families with bad communication and dysfunctional families (disengaged, rigid), children experience satisfaction, have a feeling of deepening bonds with their parents, and the feeling of being more adult and preparing themselves well for adult life. Family characteristics which are evidence of disorders in its functioning (lack of good communication with the father, mother, lack of bonds between family members, rigid, chaos in a family) co-occur with the child experiencing unpleasant emotional states in associated with the work performed, there occur feelings of dissatisfaction, unhappiness, unpleasantness, the feeling that it would be better to learn than to work.

Introduction. The positive aspects of work of the underaged are perceived as including its economic value, positive role in the process of upbringing and socialization, and in the process of vocational training or economic education. However, on the other hand, attention is also paid to the negative consequences of work, such as threats to psychophysical and intellectual development, risk to health or even life, of the adolescents. Materials and method. The basis for this study was a survey conducted in a group of Polish adolescents aged 14–15 years. The study was conducted during 2016–2017 in a representative group of 5,468 schoolchildren from junior high schools, selected by the method of stratified sampling. The research material was collected using a questionnaire for the assessment of the phenomenon of economic activity among adolescents. Results. The results of the study showed that approximately 20% of Polish adolescents aged 14–15 performed paid work as hired labour, about 30% helped with running a family business (family farm, family business), and nearly 20% of respondents undertook independent economic activity. The majority of economically active adolescents are of the opinion that the work performed exerts a positive effect on their health. Evaluation of the work activities performed as dangerous, worse state of health of adolescents, and lower parameters of their physical development, exert the greatest effect on the perception of a given work as negatively affecting health. Negative evaluations of the effect of work on health also shape the perception of work as severe and experience of accident at work. Conclusions. These results may be used for the elaboration of practical recommendations in order to reduce negative effects, and enhance positive effects which work exerts on adolescents’ health.

Opis:
Depression is becoming a growing problem in rural areas. This psychiatric disorder often accompanies epilepsy. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of fluoxetine (FXT), a commonly used antidepressant, on the protective action of two conventional antiepileptic drugs: ethosuximide (ETX) and valproate (VPA), against pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced convulsions in mice. Motor coordination and long-term memory deficits induced by FXT, antiepileptic drugs alone and in combinations with FXT were assessed in the chimney test and passive-avoidance task, respectively. Brain concentrations of ETX and VPA were measured by immunofluorescence. Obtained results indicate that FXT at the dose of 15 mg/kg (ip, 30 min before the test) significantly increased the threshold for clonic convulsions. The antidepressant drug at lower doses remained ineffective in this respect. Moreover, FXT at the highest subprotective dose (10 mg/kg, ip) markedly enhanced the anticonvulsant effects of VPA, but not of ETX, against PTZ-induced seizures. The interaction between FXT and VPA seems to be pharmacodynamic because the antidepressant drug did not alter the brain concentration of VPA. With regard to adverse effects, FXT, VPA, ETX, and the combinations of FXT with antiepileptic drugs, did not impair motor coordination and long-term memory in mice. In conclusion, the combination of FXT with VPA may be advantageous in the treatment of myoclonic epilepsy, and therefore it should be recommended for further study in clinical conditions.

Opis:
Objective: The aim of the study was to analyze selected potential demographic and psychological variables (anxiety and depression) as risk factors of inadequate control of bronchial asthma. Materials and method: The study consisted a group of 223 randomly selected asthma patients with varying degrees of asthma control. The study was designed as a diagnostic survey using the asthma control test (ACT), Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI), State- and Trait-Anxiety Inventory (STAI questionnaires X-1 and X-2), and the questionnaire for demographic data collection developed for the purposes of the presented study. Results: Inadequate control of asthma was significantly more frequent amongst females (p=0.008) who were rural inhabitants (p=0.020) and professionally active (p=0.000) patients diagnosed with any grade of depression with an aid of BDI (p=0.000). Patients with inadequate control of asthma were characterized by a significantly higher level of depression, compared to patients controlling this condition adequately (p=0.001). Conclusions: The female gender, living in a rural environment, professional activity, and even a slight degree of depression can promote inadequate control of asthma. Consequently, asthma patients with such characteristics should be provided with careful allergological surveillance. Since none of the abovementioned variables represents an independent risk factor of inadequate asthma control, it is not possible to classify asthma patients into risk groups on the basis of single parameter assessment. The risk of inadequate asthma control involves also individuals with a low severity of depression (more than 9 points on BDI), i.e. the patients who would not be diagnosed with even mild depression based on the existing criteria.

Opis:
The use of veterinary medicines and medicated feed has a potential for the exposure of agricultural workers to pharmaceuticals with phototoxic and photoallergic sideeffects. We present a 67-year-old self-employed farmer and pig breeder with a 22-year history of severe persistent photosensitivity following photoallergic contact dermatitis due to direct occupational dermal and airborne contact to chlorpromazine (sedative) and olaquindox (antibiotic and animal growth promoter, AGP). His fi rst dermatitis symptoms appeared at the age of 45 when the pig breeding was intensifi ed. He showed erythematous, scaly, and pruritic plaques localized symmetrically on the sun-exposed backs of his hands, fi ngers, and forearms, spreading to his face and other sun-exposed body sites. Without protective measures, he injected the animals with chlorpromazine. Besides, for several years he mixed by hand a powder containing olaquindox into the pigs’ dry food. Epicutaneous and photo-patch tests showed positive reactions to promethazine, chlorpromazine, and olaquindox. In spite of the complete avoidance of the identifi ed photoallergens for several years, his life is still extremely disabled due to the persistent photosensitivity. Our case report stresses the observation that olaquindox and chlorpromazine as phototoxic agents and photoallergens are capable of inducing a persistent and severe photosensitivity for many years, even after termination of exposure. Although the use of phenothiazine derivates and APGs for animals has meanwhile been banned in the European Union (EU), AGPs are still widely used in Asia. Physicians, especially occupational physicians, should be still aware of these phototoxic and photoallergic agents to reduce the burden of skin disease at work.

Fusarium mycotoxins deoxynivalenol (DON), T-2 toxin, and zearalenone (ZEN) contamination in 5 kinds of cereal grain harvested in 2004 and 2005 in different regions of Lithuania was examined for their occurrence frequency and level. In all cereal species DON was the most frequently detected mycotoxin with an incidence rate of 98.0 - 100% and range in positive samples from traces to 691 μg kg-1 in 2004 and 62.5-94.0%, range from traces to 1,121 μg kg-1 in 2005, respectively. All the tested oat samples collected in 2004-2005 were found to be contaminated with the T-2 toxin. In one sample from the year 2004 the level of T-2 toxin (121.5 μg kg-1) exceeded the allowable level. In 2004, ZEN contamination was more frequent in spring wheat, barley and oats grain, whereas in 2005 this toxin was identifi ed at higher levels only in barley grain (68.0%). In one barley grain sample from 2004, ZEN content (193.4 μg kg-1) exceeded the allowable level. Variation in the relative air-humidity exerted some effect on the incidence of Fusarium spp. fungi and mycotoxin content in wheat grain. The weather conditions at harvesting contributed to an increase in the contents of Fusarium fungi and DON and ZEN mycotoxins produced by them in winter wheat grain. This risk factor increases the threat to human and animal health.

The aim of the study was to assess the frequency of Borrelia burgdorferi DNA detection in the blood and urine of patients diagnosed with erythema migrans, and compare the results of PCR-based methods with ELISA methodology. The latter was used to detect serum antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi of the IgM and IgG classes, before and after antibiotic therapy. The study included 86 patients hospitalized in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Neuroinfections in the Medical Academy in Białystok, diagnosed with the erythema migrans phase of Lyme borreliosis. Examinations were carried out twice: the fi rst at the moment of diagnosis (Trial 1), the second after 4 weeks of antibiotic therapy. The study showed that antibiotic therapy in the early phase of borreliosis does not decrease the sensitivity of PCR and that after 4 weeks of therapy (Trial 2), spirochete DNA is still detectable in most patients (45/86). There was no correlation between detectability of spirochete DNA and the presence of antibodies against B. burgdorferi s.l. (assessed by ELISA) during the course of erythema migrans. The largest percentage of positive results in the detection of B. burgdorferi s.l. DNA was observed in patients who simultaneously possessed IgM and IgG antibodies against B. burgdorferi, while the lowest percentage of PCR positive results was among patients with only IgM antibodies.

Introduction and objective. The aim of this study is to assess the interpersonal relations of employees of State Forests in Poland, as well as to indicate the factors related to the level of satisfaction with the relations among people employed in similar positions, and relations with superiors. Materials and method. The issues investigated were developed based on research conducted between 2014–2015 among employees of State Forests in Poland. In each of the 9 forest districts selected, 25 people were selected for testing from 3 groups of employees: foresters, deputy foresters and supervisors, together with administrative staff. Altogether, 399 people took part in the study conducted by means of a questionnaire. Results. The study showed that the overall level of satisfaction with interpersonal relations among employees of State Forests in Poland is high. Analysis indicated that the demographic characteristics of respondents, such as age, gender or place of residence, had no significant influence on satisfaction with interpersonal relations in the workplace. However, the level of satisfaction with interpersonal relations was positively affected by a high level of overall job satisfaction and satisfaction with remuneration. Decrease in the level of satisfaction was influenced by the accumulation of stressful life events and employment in administration. Conclusions. Satisfaction with interpersonal relationships in the workplace is an important indicator of employee mental health. Studies have shown the need to broaden the scope of research into the variables that determine the character and personality of an employee.
