Opis:
Pollen allergy is characterized by seasonal allergic manifestations affecting patients during the plant pollen season. The aim of this study was to analyze the Betulaceae pollen pattern in Zagreb (2002-2005) and to determine the incidence of sensitization to these pollen types in patients with seasonal respiratory allergy. Twenty-four-hour pollen counts were carried out using volumetric procedure. Skin prick test were performed on a total of 864 patients aged 18-80< in Zagreb between 2 January – 31 December 2004. Pollen of the representatives of the family Betulaceae accounted for a signifi cant proportion of total pollen (34% on an average), predominated by Betula pollen and considerably lower proportion of Alnus sp. and Corylus sp. pollen. Alder and hazel pollen fi rst occurred in the air in February throughout the study period. The highest airborne pollen concentration of these taxa was recorded in February and March. The birch pollen season generally peaked in April. Only 2.67% of patients showed birch pollen monosensitization. The proportion of patients with polysensitization to Betulaceae pollen was considerably greater (12.88%), whereas polysensitization to Betulaceae, Poaceae and Ambrosia pollen was recorded in the highest proportion of patients (26.23%). According to age, the highest and lowest rate of allergy was recorded in the 31-50 and >51 age groups, respectively (46.22% vs 23.12%). Female predominance was observed across all age groups. The patients with monosensitization to birch pollen had the most severe symptoms in April. In the patients with poylsensitization to alder, hazel and birch pollen who developed cross-reaction, initial symptoms occurred as early as February, with abrupt exacerbation in March and April. The most severe condition was observed in the patients allergic to birch, hazel, alder, grass and ragweed pollen, with symptoms present throughout the year and exacerbation in spring and late summer months.

Opis:
Aspergillus flavus is a saprophytic fungus which can grow on corn and produce aflatoxins which render it unsafe for consumption as food and feed. In this study, aflatoxin and non-aflatoxin producing isolates of A. flavus were grown separately on wet (20% water added), sterile or non-sterile cracked corn. Wet and dry cracked corn controls were included as needed. Secondary metabolic volatiles were identified and aflatoxin concentrations determined over a 12-day period. Volatiles unique to the toxigenic A. flavus isolates were determined by comparison with volatiles produced by the respective corn controls and the non-toxigenic A. flavus isolate. The number and identity of the volatiles produced by these A. flavus isolates varied by isolate, whether sterile or non-sterile corn was the substrate, and the sampling day. Overall, most of the volatiles were produced before day 8 after inoculation. Aflatoxin production was 10-fold lower on the sterile corn, compared to the nonsterile corn. Volatiles unique to the aflatoxin producing isolates were identified on both substrates after comparison with those produced by the non-aflatoxin producing isolate, as well as the corn control samples. Results indicate that several factors (substrate, fungal isolate, culture age) affect volatile and aflatoxin production by A. flavus.

Opis:
Airborne fungi were collected over a one year period at 2-month intervals at 2 sawmills in Croatia (SM 1 and SM 2) processing mainly beech wood and oak wood. A questionnaire concerning respiratory symptoms and skin prick test (SPT) with common inhalatory allergens and moulds Cladosporium herbarum, Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium notatum, and Rhizopus nigricans were performed in 96 workers from the same sawmills. Average concentrations of airborne fungi were 1,696-7,316 cfu/m3 in SM 1 and 1,706-4,819 cfu/m3 in SM 2, respectively. Health hazardous levels of airborne fungi (above 104/m3) were present only in SM 1. These levels were related to saw working sites and were season-dependent, i.e. present only during the summer. Penicillium (50-100%), Paecilomyces (43-100%) and Chrysonilia (33-100%) dominated among 17 fungal genera identified in both sawmills. Symptoms of rhinitis, asthma, and dry cough were most frequently recorded among analysed workers. SPT to moulds was negative in all tested workers, except one positive to R. nigricans, indicating that moderate airborne fungi levels found in the analysed sawmills were not related to IgE-mediated sensitization to moulds in exposed workers, even in atopics. Atopy was present among woodworkers in similar proportions to the general population of Croatia, suggesting that the wood-processing industry is not selective for atopic workers.

Opis:
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) genotype 3 is widespread in industrialized countries and widely recognized as a serious public health issue. HEV genotype 3 is excreted in both human and animal stools, having the potential to be introduced in aquatic environments through wastewater discharge. For this reason, waterborne transmission of the HEV genotype 3 is drawing increasing attention from the scientific community. Although studies in Portugal have shown that HEV circulates in both humans and swine, no study has yet focused on the presence of HEV in wastewater. Hence, a total of 60 water samples (influent and effluent) from 15 Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) of different regions of Portugal were tested for the presence of HEV using a broad spectrum real-time RT-PCR with amplification within the ORF2 region of HEV genome. Positive samples were retested by nested RT-PCR with amplification within the ORF1 region, sequenced followed by phylogenetic analysis. HEV sequences were retrieved from two influent samples collected in December 2013 from WWTPs of North and Central of Portugal and classified in subgenotype 3i and 3f. This is the first study showing the presence of HEV in aquatic environments of Portugal.

Opis:
Introduction and objectives. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is long life disease that results from an interaction between a polygenetic predisposition and environmental factors, including smoking. The aim of this study was to evaluate beliefs about and awareness of smoking among adolescents with IBD compared to healthy controls. Materials and method. Patients with IBD, Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), and healthy controls were asked to complete a questionnaire on demographic data and smoking status. The questionnaire also included data on beliefs and awareness of smoking-related health effects, including effects on IBD. Results. A total of 139 IBD patients and 108 controls were enrolled in the study. Of the IBD patients, 17/139 (12.2%) were smokers compared to 18/108 (16.7%) of controls (p=0.3). Patients with IBD were nine times more likely to be everyday smokers than occasional smokers (OR=9.2, 95% CI: 1.9- 45.1, p=0.004). No difference was found between patients with CD and UC in their answers to the question of whether “smoking increases the risk for surgery in your type of IBD” (17/28 (60.7%) vs. 10/29 (34.5%), respectively (p=0.047). More patients with CD than UC were aware of the risks of smoking on their disease: extra-intestinal manifestations and disease exacerbation, OR=11.3 (95% CI: 4.1 – 30.9; p=0.000) and OR=19.3 (95% CI: 6.7 – 55.1; p=0.000), respectively. Conclusions. The data obtained demonstrated that adolescents with CD are much more aware of the role of smoking on CD than are their peers with UC; however, this awareness is still unsatisfactory. Therefore, there is an unmet need to implement better anti-smoking strategies for this group of patients.
