    Opis:
    The article presents the scope of research conducted within regard to historical semantics in Poland. Semanticists do research on the history of word’s and construction’s meaning. The sources of research materials (dictionaries and texts) are discussed. The on-line Conceptual Dictionary of Old Polish is described in detail as one of the sources. Also there are presented some achievements of Polish linguists in semantic-historical research.

    Opis:
    The article concerns the history of Polish criminal jargon. The author presented 68 names of thieves. He extracted linguistic material from 19th‑century texts, but some of the collected units are much older. The author presented the provenance of the names and characterized the material in formal and semantic terms. The author drew attention to the territorial diversity of names – their functioning in the speech of criminals operating in different partitions and their fate after the unification of various parts of Poland. Among the names discussed are, for example: andrus, klawiszarz, pajęczeniarz, szpringer, marwicher, jold.

    In the Old Polish and Middle Polish periods there existed deverbal nouns with the formant -ek, such nalazek, przepadek, spisek and others. Witold Doroszewski called them nomina acti. They are also found in Księgi gromadzkie wsi Kasina Wielka. Nowadays, the prefix-ek doesn’t serve this function.

    Opis:
    In the article herein the thirty-four lexical units were undertaken and analysed thoroughly which maintained the old- and middle-Polish appellations of baking products – pastries. Stemming from the etymology, the motivation was investigated, the meaning and the semantic changes in the gathered texts of words were also scrutinized and put under the magnifying glass. It was evidenced that the nomination of investigated names of ‘baked cakes’ consisted of six general functions such as: 1. literal character of particular cake; 2. indication of its main baking ingredients; 3. the form of it; 4. origin of a cake; 5. increase of ‘favourable of a cake’ by a referral to the authority; 6. correlation of the particular cake with its rites and holidays (during which the pastries were served) (sic!). Most frequently the old names of ‘baked goodies’ were made as simple associations and were coupled with particular shape of the bake.

    The article concerns the writer’s identity in the old scientific text in the light of Janusz Korczak’s work How to love a child. A child in the family. Attention was also paid to the roles which the author plays in the text. He is identical with the author of the work and he is a doctor, educator and philosopher. The article also discusses the emotional involvement of the author and his pedagogical passion. The history of the book creation was discussed, and then the language forms, through which the subject of the text was revealed, were shown.

    In the herein article the forty-four lexical units were analysed thoroughly by semasiological method. They were coupled with the middle and modern-Polish ‘women’s trouble’. The written material was gathered throughout based upon the formal structure of collected lexemes. It turned out that the investigated units concentrated around six fields: 1. Uterus, 2. Secretions, 3. Breath, 4. Pain, 5. Time, 6. Woman. The primary meaning of many analysed appellations were neutral, they were concerned mainly with the physical ailments. Around the 19th century the researched units were correlated with the hysteria. The ongoing and signalized semantic change was influenced by the socio-cultural factors. The fashion of that time contributed deeply to the manifestation of these supposed women’s maladies.

    Opis:
    The main subject of the study is to point out the language and text exponents of picturesqueness as a style feature of historical pamphlet of XVI th. century. The observations were made on the example of the work Acrostichis własnego wyobrażenia Kniaża Wielkiego Moskiewskiego by Walenty Neothebel. One can indicate a few determinants of picturesqueness, they are: discontinuous words structures, proverbs and idioms, comparisons, enumerations and large and extensive description contexts. In general distinguished devices are not imaginative or exquisite, frequently being allied to simple, even colloquial language. In that the analyzed text is clearly vivid and evocative. The applied devices serve pragmatic effectiveness of the work, wich is its most important component. In the analyzed piece of work one can distinguish the features of more than one literary genre, e.g. pamphlet, morality play or dialogue, but the pragmatic aspect leads primarily to critical texts of political subject which are close right to the pamphlet. Furthermore, one can mark that Walenty Neothebel due to negative picture of tsar Ivan the Terrible presented in Acrostichis preserved the negative stereotype of Russians in Polish language and culture.

    Opis:
    This paper is devoted to the lexeme tchawica from a diachronic perspective. The first part is the description of a trachea (its functions and structure) as an anatomical organ, which is followed by the analysis of its etymology. The main focus of investigation is the description of tchawica in the history of the Polish language and dialects. For this purpose, synonyms, derivatives, variant forms (in terms of phonetics and morphology), names based on foreign words (derived from Latin and Greek), as well as hybrid names, have been pointed out. According to the analysis, these names are differentiated both in terms of motivation and form.

    This paper is an attempt at drawing attention to the first Protestant translation of the whole Bible into Polish, which is traditionally known as Brest Bible or Radziwill Bible, in terms of its significance and place in the history of Polish language. The first part of this work is the introduction of some basic data from the field of origins, history and the state of previous philological research into Brest Bible. The second part of the paper shows the role of the translation in the process of shaping the characteristics of Polish biblical style and the way in which the translators used the richness and potential of the Polish language in the Renaissance. As the source material to complete the research task the author of the paper used some chosen areas of the language in Brest Bible, which included lexis and fixed expressions.

    Opis:
    The object of description in the following paper is the lexeme język. Linguistic analysis has been broadened by medical context, in which the author presents the content regarding the tongue as the first part of the digestive system, as a sense of taste, and finally, as vocal apparatus. For this purpose, the most important issues connected with the structure, physiology and pathology of the tongue have been presented. The second part of the discussion has been dedicated to the place of the noun język, along with its synonyms and derived forms in old and contemporary general Polish language, as well as dialects. The final part contains remarks on the functioning of the word język in Polish phraseology. This lexeme, as a polysemantic unit, happens to be the component of numerous petrified word combinations, whose meaning reflects the variety of references and contexts preserved in old and contemporary Polish culture.
